Title: "Trailer Queen" the 1983 Limited Wagon
Post by: Prafeston on September 14, 2011, 01:26:32 AM
If you don't mind I'm about to tell a story. If you do mind, please move along. There are plenty of pictures to suit your fancy after the novel.  ;D

For starters I've been a fan of the AMC Eagle ever since I saw an SX/4 outside my Jr. High. Someone's parents were picking them up in this strange lifted sports car looking thing that said 4x4 on the side. That spawned my interested in the Eagle and I've always had a soft spot for these odd vehicles. Never really having the urge to purchase one I just loved knowing what they were if I was with someone that saw one and was like what the heck is that!

Recently though I got the itch. I was considering selling my car and started seriously looking into purchasing an AMC Eagle. Around that time, maybe 4 months ago, was when I found this lovely community and I became a pretty hardcore lurker. This lurking lead me to the Midwest/International Meet thread. Mavericke has been a great source of knowledge and his Sanctuary is only about 260 miles from where I live in MO. Was considering going to the meet when I found out about it several months ago, but a friends band was in the finals for a Battle of the Bands and we were all gonna camp on the river that weekend and go to the show. So I pretty much decided I couldn't make the meet.

Then about two weeks ago I finally sell my car (2008 Mazdaspeed3) and I'm carless and looking for Eagles like crazy and start talking to Mavericke again who decides he'd be willing to sell me his lifted '85. Not really one of his project cars, but 'his' Eagle! :) I'm seriously considering and me and Mav are shooting back emails like crazy...novels much like the one I'm writing now. I'm also looking at another '85 which is local to me and here it is the end of the week right before the Midwest Meet and things just start snowballing.

My girlfriend has come into town cause we haven't seen each other in 3 weeks and I tell her we have to take a look at this Eagle on Friday at 10am (The local '85). The agreed on Wednesday to drive the Eagle to my town, he lived a mere 30 minutes away, and let me test drive it. I'm abruptly awakened Friday morning at 7am to a phone call. It's the guy with the local '85 and he's called to tell me he sold the car on Thursday night. I was too tired to curse him so I just said ok and hung up. Looking back at it though I was quite :censored: at him as we had discussed on the phone how some people on craigslist just aren't honest and blah blah. I told him about another story where someone had sold a car right out from under me. And then not only does he go and do the exact same thing he also doesn't even have the courtesy to call me on Thursday night instead of waking me up in the morning of the day he's supposed to be letting me test drive his car.

Rant over! :)

So it's Friday morning and I have a wedding the following weekend I still haven't bought a suit for (I'm in the wedding and most by my own suit, a rant I'll not start now!) so the gf is nice enough to take me to STL so we can hit up the mall and see what I can find. We get to STL around 12 and are suit shopping for nearly 4 hours and I finally find one I like that fits me and is the right color (Chocolate brown suits are extremely hard to find). I also did some searching of the STL area and called on an Eagle that turned out to be a non-runner so I decided not to even mess with it. Another car I had been considering was an older Civic Hatchback (Pre '92) and I found one relatively close and we went and took a look at it. It was a piece of crap like most of them are...civic owners never seem to take care of their vehicles or they try to rice them out like it's a race car or something.

Having no luck in the car department, but toting a new suit we decide to get some grub before heading back home. We find a local restaurant that sounds good and head that way when the gf says, "After we eat why don't we just go check out that Eagle in Illinois?" She new I had been talking to Mav about his car and thinking I may never get a chance to check it out since I was carless and probably wouldn't want to make the 260 mile on my motorcycle. So it's like 7pm and we are 5 hours from where Mav lives and I call him up and say, "Mav, we're heading your way so I can take a look at the car."

Five and half hours later me and the gf are sleeping on the floor in the living room of Mav's house. Basically a complete stranger to us he stayed up late to let us in around 12:30am when we all had to be up around 6am and get ready for Cordova. I finally make my way off the floor around 6:30 or so and head outside where I can tell there is some commotion. Sorry, I'm bad with names...but eaglefreek (don't remember your real name) and don't remember the other guys name either (was driving I think an '84 Burnt Orange Wagon, maybe Eagleearl?) were outside getting there cars ready and the three of us just talked while Mav wrangled up the family. While we were talking I had a chance to take a look at Mav's lifted '85. I love the Windshield Visor and the lift looked nice. Maybe a little taller than I thought it was. The car just needed a ton of little things and I wasn't being drawn to it. Unfortunately me and Mav never really got to talk as we were in such a rush to get off to Cordova.

And actually me and Andrea (the gf) weren't really planning on going to Cordova, but we had already driven that far we just figured what was 45 more minutes and a chance to see some cool AMCs! So me and Andrea joined the caravan of Eagles taking up the caboose with our 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport...that kinda counts right? :)

The AMC Nationals were really something else. Was so cool seeing so many AMCs running around from show cars to racers and of course it was cool to see all the Eagles. Though it would have been nice to see some more. There were only like 7 Wagons and no Sedans/Coupes/SX4/Kammbacks. There was one wagon there that wasn't apart of our group and it had people turning there heads. :) It was a 1983 Limited in Showroom Condition with only 34,000 miles on the odometer. As we are walking up to it Andrea goes, "Look, it's for sale!" I look it over for like a minute or two and tell her I think he's probably asking $5500 (There is no price on the sign). Soon after the owner comes over and starts talking to us and she asks him how much he's asking for it and he says, "5500" :) I just look at her and smile!

After leaving and coming back to the car many times and seeing person after person drooling over it and just talking about how great it was I decided I wanted it to be mine! I didn't have the cash though so I asked him if he'd take a deposit and he agreed. In less than 30 minutes we raced off to Clinton, Iowa where there was an US Bank and raced back with a deposit. Andrea got two pieces of paper and wrote up a quick official sounding agreement and we both signed it and I walked back to the car and took the For Sale sign off the window! Likely for me the guy was actually from STL which is only about 2 hours from where I live. Not wanting to put miles on it he trailered it up to Cordova. (Hence her name: Trailer Queen. I'll probably just call her TQ) :)

Before leaving we got a grab back from Mav and took a seat in the stands to watch a few drag races and just relax for a bit. Turns out I was a winner of one of the door prizes from the grab bag. So I got to come home with a cool little shop vacuum. And on that note we said our goodbyes and thanked Mav for everything. Took some crap for buying an Eagle that wasn't his. Sorry Mav next time I owe you!  :occasion14:

Six hours later we were walking up to the stage just in time to see my friends band start playing at the Battle of the Bands. The show was great, the beer was great, the camping was great, and the water was fricken cold! :) Sunday we head back to my house and just nap most of the afternoon. We had been on the move quite a bit in the last couple days.

Rested up Monday morning we headed to the bank and I applied for a loan at 9am. Took my suit to get tailored at 10am and picked up 5000 bucks at 10:45am. I immediately called work and told them I needed to take the day off. They couldn't really afford to not have me later though so I had to be back by 6pm. Andrea just being the great sport she had been all weekend then drove me to STL. By 2pm I was driving my new Eagle around with Andrea before we took her back to her car and she headed back to KC and we had to say goodbye again.

Needless to say I had quite the productive weekend. And Tuesday morning I had the Eagle inspected, insured, and licensed all before work! :)

Well I'm done talking and if you even made it all the way through that novel props to you. In fact tell me if you read the whole thing and I'll give you some eggs!

I did warn you from the start! :) I knew it was going to be lengthy when I finally sat down to write that. Sure I could have done without saying most of that, but I think it just adds to the whole story. I had quite the weekend to say the least!  ;D

Read the entire story and enjoyed it! Your eagle is just plain awsome! Would you believe wife and I bought one brand new just like it,same color, wood paneling and all! Only difference ours had fog lights. We loved that eagle and we kept it for many years and my only regret is I sold it to my father in law and I should have kept it.Anyway enjoyed your story and hope you are enjoying your awsome eagle.

Thanks for taking the time to read the whole story.

I wish mine had the fog lights...and kind of wish it had the roof rack too. So far I'm loving it. Gonna take it in for a tint job soon.

Congrats! You have a very nice car. I was the heavy set guy at the show (one of the ones drooling). Hopefully we will see you and Trailer Queen around sometime. I just named my project SX/4 "Road Trip". Anyway, have fun with the car and try to find another one to drive around the most, you want to keep this one with low mileage and in pristine condition!

:) Yeah, it except for a few blemishes here and there it looks like it came off the showroom floor.

I remember meeting you. You cause I recognized the forum name. What was your real name? I also remember you saying you were said your Eagle wasn't ready for the trip. TQ, will be all over the place. This is my daily driver right now, but don't get me wrong, I will be babying it. I'm feel more protect of it than I did my old 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 and that was a 18,500 dollar car when I bought it!! I'm contemplating taking it to CO this weekend, but I'm worried about the 12 hour drive...if something bad happens, heaven forbid, and I get stranded in Kansas the groom will be quite :censored: with me as I'm supposed to be in the wedding. I like the name of the SX/4. Road Trip, RT!

Where are you heading in CO?  If you bring the wagon and you're going to be in the Denver area, we could have a mini-meet  :occasion14:

Absolutely gorgeous pictures. I'm pretty sure I saw this car for sale last year. I can't imagine there are 2 brown Eagles with less than 40k miles in St Louis. I was trying to figure out how to buy it then. However it looks like it finally went to a good home. It was great meeting you and your girlfriend. She's a keeper.  ;) Did it not have a cargo cover in the hatch area?

I don't believe the Eagle will be taken on this long trek. I'd just hate to do that to her on my first week of having her.

The wedding is in Wetmore, CO just south of Colorado Springs. Turns out it's actually a 15 hour drive from where I live. Ouch!

It was a pleasure meeting you too. Thanks for the compliment. We really just started dating a couple months ago. It's pretty new, but going well.

Probably the same one. He said he had it on eBay for awhile and I remember it up there. He was trying to sell it for 6500. As for the cargo cover, I just noticed that I was missing that when I took that rear hatch photo. I'll have to call up Ralph and see if he's got it or if it just never had it.

I do have some questions already!  ;)

There is a sound coming from one of the drivers side wheels that has something to do with the rotating of the wheel. You can hear it increasing in repetition with increased speed. Not real worried about this as I've heard similar noises in other cars, but just was curious if anyone would know what this might be.

Also I didn't notice this till after I tried the heater today, but the car started smelling funny from the engine bay. Noticeably from the drivers side wheel well. I initially thought it was just the heater having not been used in awhile or something, but I turned it off and it could still be smelled. Possibly burning oil? Leaky valve cover? I didn't notice this at all the last two days. Not even today until after using the heater when I got off work today at 7 and it was like 50 degrees out.

And finally, one of the things that was holding me back a bit from purchasing an Eagle was the lower gas mileage. Are there any simple/cheap ways to increase the MPGs...besides babying the throttle...something I'm already doing! :) I think I've read some about upgraded carbs and removal of emissions stuff...

Well it would appear I'm pretty close to both of you, but probably won't really have any time to hang out. I do know Friday after the rehearsal we are having dinner in Florence and then just hanging out around there. I guess there is some thing going on in town...Pioneer Days celebration?

If you are in the area definitely shoot me a PM and we'll exchange info and say hi! I just can't really hang much as I'm sure the groom is gonna wanna spend time with all of us.

Oh yeah.....georgeous car by the way. What a find!! Its funny, i had posted last night  asking about wagons that have the roof rack delete and their rarity. the few I have seen w/o the roof rack were fairly low optioned models (like mine) and I was wondering if any limited models had that delete option.....you sir, just answered my question. Thank you  ;D

its probably oil leaking from the valve cover. plastic valve covers leak. first investment in it needs to be to swap to one of the aluminum valve cover kits. for the ones that work, will cost AROUND $100. little less on some websites. 2nd job to do, go with gronks motorcraft 2100 carburetor kit. that will be a HUGE improvement on driveability, milage, and maintenance. but with that, you get rid of most all of the emissions crap.

i think thats about the closest i have seen to a show room eagle since i was a little kid and remembering the amc dealership and always wanting one. (there is now a super walmart where the old dealership was)

I've already been looking at Valve Covers. Do any of the 4.2L Jeep Valve Covers work?

Already been looking at GRONKs carb kit too, but unfortunately for right now, that's a bit pricey.

Thanks for the compliment on the car. She is quite sharp. If you saw her in person you'd find a few blemishes, but for the most part it looks like it just came off the showroom floor.

Thanks! For it being a Limited it is very low option. It's like someone was like, "Yeah, I want the leather seats, but I can't afford all that other stuff!"

No Cruise Control
No Fog Lights
No Roof Rack
No Power Windows
No Power Locks
No Center Gauge Pod
No Power Seats (Not sure if this was an option in '83, but I have seen this on Eagle)
Two Speed Wipers
Apparently No Cargo Cover (Though this could have been removed at some point)

That's all I can think of right now, but yeah, it appears to be a very low optioned Limited.

I am sure you will do what you think best, but if it were mine, I would not remove any factory equipment (emission, carb, etc).  The best option is a FI 4.0 for MPG, but I would not suggest that for your car, as it is toooooo nice to modify it's stock form.  If the engine had several hundred thousand miles on it, I'd say go for it, but not this one.   It is hard to squeeze more MPG out of a carbureted engine.  These 6's are NOT known for high MPG.  I was very happy to get the 21.6 average MPG on my 5,600 mile trip.  That would be another reason to get a cheap (higher MPG) beater for daily driving, and just use the Eagle for the weekend and special trips. Being in the "salt Belt" would be another reason to park the Eagle in the winter.  Many nice looking Eagles (on the outside) have suffered from rust rot, and I would hate to see yours suffer that same fate.

Is this just the head conversion I've read about in a few places?

If I do anything to this car it would be replacing the plastic valve cover and possibly upgrading the carb. Now I'm kind of wanting a beater Eagle! I think I bought a car nicer than I was initially looking for! :)

I know its your car and your free to do what ever you see fit to do to it,but if it were mine I would polish and detail it and keep it in a garage only to be driven on nice days or maybe a car show or cruise night.People admire stock original cars and if at some point and time decide you want to sell it one of the first questions you will be ask is it original and then whats the milage.Thats just my two cents but if its original keep it original.Down the road you will be glad you did.

I don't plan on touching anything unless it breaks...speaking of which. My tape deck isn't working properly and I'd love to find a replacement. Also considering some sort of original look...like keeping the face of the radio and getting the innards to replace with a CD Headunit. Then the original face could be flipped down to reveal the CD Player behind it. No one would have to know the original radio didn't work! :)

Unfortunately I live with my mom and between her stuff and my motorcycle there is no room for a car.

Might have to look into a car cover and maybe someone can just donate another Eagle for me to tote around during the winter  ;) ;) ;)

How bad do you want to baby "this" car...there is always a price! :)

On a side note I might have had a couple more first for TQ...at least some first in some time. Been kind of raining lately so she got to feel some rain and I had a remote video shoot and got to haul some equipment around in the back hatch.

I have 3 at the moment and I have to say it does get expensive.  the wagon is all but finished (except for the correct speedo gear), the kammback is getting ready for it's new garage to get stripped down to nothing and rebuilt during the winter, and my SX/4 is getting a 1980 spirit to donate it's body (among other things i don't care to talk about too much)

I used to worry myself about how many miles the car had when making a purchace....However after purchacing several very low mileage Eagles in the past just to find out they had the frame rail, floor board and spare tire well delete option...I have now shifted my priorities to good solid body. Even a full engine and drive train rebuild seems easy compared to cutting fabricating and welding sheet metal.....Thats just me though...if I knew how to work metal it probably wouldnt have been such a big deal.

The door mounts with screws at the bottom.  I don't remember what kind of adjustment they have.  I have added washers to make a door line up.  The latch is adjustable, but I think that just controls how tightly the door closes.

As Jim said, there are three nuts on the bottom of the door that hold it in place.  There may be a slight amount of adjustment there if you loosen the nuts.  Also, on some glove box doors (but not all) the plastic covering on the inside face of the door has slots in it and you can loosen the screws holding the two halves together and make slight changes to the relation of the door front to the hinge.  On my car it didn't have these slots but I removed the inside plastic cover and slotted the holes with a drill, you have to be careful because the drill wants to go sideways rather than straight ahead or back. To remove the back cover you have to remove the lock cylinder so that might be a problem (I couldn't figure out how to do it so I took it to a locksmith). I played with my glove box door for two hours and got it a little better but on mine its apparent the dash shell and/or upper glove box case was made crooked or has warped and I was unable to get everything to line up nicely.  Yours looks a lot closer initially than mine was.

Doesn't the round headed key work the glovebox?

On my 83 and 88 one key is for the ignition, and the other is for the doors, hatch and glove box.
Some one may have changed the cylinder or the door for the glove box if that is the only place it doesn't work.
You could probably have it re-keyed to use the same key as the doors.

Yeah, that's how it is with mine too. The key that opens the doors and hatch fits in the glove box spot, but doesn't seem to turn it either way.

So this is what I'm guessing the first of many like it.

Well the eBay ad didn't say a year. Just said Spirit grill...from what ammachine said it sounds like it's an 80+ Spirit grill.

And the fit is pretty good. No mods necessary. There are some tabs where the screws go in on the car and they can be slide back and forth to match the holes on the grill. I was pretty impressed!

Once I try them on it I will let you know first Priya. The sport version of the 1980 is NOS and I put a NOS Eagle emblem on it. I payed big bucks for that one. The AMX was not cheap either but there is not even 1 crack or missing tab.

I haven't posted in some time. Put the Gronk carb on quite awhile ago, but I still have some adjusting to do...not to mention that one of the ears where the carb bolts on cracked as I was installing it and it happens to be on the one side there is a vacuum port right there so I might be getting a bit of a leak there and I'll have to get that fixed soon. The car isn't running real great at the moment and I'm still waiting to install the new valve cover. Hopefully in the next week or so I can finish all the things I need to do with the Carb...main thing is I haven't done the ECM Test Bypass thing.

I did install new spark plugs and the TFI/Ignition upgrade from Gronk this weekend. Still taking forever to start, but I'm thinking that is still the carb issue.

Here is some pics of what it looks like right now.

I also snagged the skid plate off of Threepete and installed it on TQ. It still needs to be removed again so I can clean it even better and tap two of the holes for the bottom bolts. Apparently if your Eagle didn't come with a skid plate the hole weren't tapped. They are there but not tapped. I did have a little small metal protector thing on the passenger side two bolts so I was able to at least put the skid plate on using those two holes.

Cleaning the gunk off the skid plate before putting it on TQ. Had to use a puddy knife!

And here is the small metal protector that was already mounted.

Today I also put in the clear lens turn signals. I can't decide if I like them more or not.

I found out when installing the turn signals that both my headlight buckets in TQ are broken on a couple of the places where the headlight trim screws in. Also I knew one of my headlights was a little cross eyed and I found out it is because the adjuster is broken.

I also have some things coming my way shortly. Getting a set of mud flaps and some NOS Marchal fog lights with the white covers. Also trading captspillane my '80 grill and clear signals (not the ones I just installed. I bought those before I bought Threepete.) for a set of the chrome ventshades. Really excited about getting those!

So here is what Threepete looks like right now! :) Had to toss the drivers side headlight trim...and both buckets are pretty much cracked to pieces.

Threepete also had a pretty decent cargo cover, but unfortunately I believe it is the honey color. Doesn't quite match.

TQ's looking awesome as always!  I'd probably stick with the clear (though I am still torn on that one).  Looks good on 'er.  Sorry Threepete didn't work out as well as you'd hoped.  :(

Thanks! Yeah, I'll probably stick with the clear. It seems to go with the chrome better. Though i don't think the orange looks as bad on the dark brown cars as it does on some of the other colors.

And as far as Threepete goes...you win some, you lose some! :) And I am trading some things off of it for some ventshades which are kind of rare...so I guess you could say I paid 865 bucks for some ventshades for TQ!  :rotfl:

Tomorrow hopefully it will be a bit warmer and I can clean Threepete up a bit and put it up for sale. Tried starting it today and I think the battery is dead again.

He had a couple more left. Mine are NOS, but he has a used pair with NOS Covers and they are a bit cheaper...he also had a chrome set that was a bit more expensive. NOS Fogs and Covers and came with a Ford Carrying case.

There are also several on eBay right now.

That's a sweet Eagle. Those lights are going to look great.  Nothing like that stock look! I have a set on my 85 Mustang GT. Just keep an eye on the little Fox emblem. I have had many fall off. Now i need to find some factory rear flaps.

Thanks snow Eagle.

Do you think I should paint the mud flaps all black or do the Eagle part in white like they were originally? The big white lettering kinda seems obnoxious, but that would be stock. I could maybe even do the Eagle part in a dark brown to match my paint.

Brown won't show well against the black. Maybe a cream color if you don't want the bright white. Eggscelent score on the flaps BTW.

I think all black would look the best. 4 big white Eagle logos are a bit much. The later model flaps are all black with different sheen. I also like the amber turns for some reason while I am givin my 2 cents.  ;D

Well I couldn't pass up this deal for a set of 5 Grand Cherokee wheels with tires for 100 bucks. I bought them sight unseen and had a friend pick them up for me since they were post on the STL CL. My mom was in STL a couple days later and I had her be my parts courier!

They showed up and were a little rougher than I was hoping and the tire were 235/75 and I was thinking they were 225/75. The tires actually have more tread than I thought and after seeing the condition of the wheels I think I'll just post them back up for sale. The brown on the wheels doesn't really match all that well either.

I couldn't pass up seeing how they looked on the car though! :)

Does that mean you don't like them on the wagon?

I need to find a pair like yours with the grey/charcoal accents. The goldish yellow just isn't working. I've already got them relisted at 175! :) Giving myself some wiggle room. I also already have plans of purchasing some of the shallower Canyon style ones. Another 100 dollar find. This time with no tires, but supposedly the wheels don't have any blemishes like these tear drops do.

When are you going to put in the spacers for the coils and lift the rear end? With the brush guard, fog lights, wheels and all of that you've been doing, it won't be long berfore you are ready for some off-roading! At least on the light side, I'd hate to see you graze a tree with that car!

if I had em I'd tape off all the chrome nad scuff the gold and paint it a flat or gloss black then after everything is dry and the tape removed I'd hit them with a powerball and some polish.  the gold ZJ wheels don't really sit whell with me ither

The shiny part is pretty bad. Most of the wheels have lost quite a bit of clear coat and are starting to corrode where it has.

This is the best looking wheel.

I don't want a huge lift, but I would like something kind of like A-A Eagle's.

I'll never go mudding in this car, but I wouldn't mind taking it on some light trails. No way would I get it anywhere where it had even the slightest possibility of hitting a tree!!

Thanks, photography is a hobby of mine and I'm surprised how good my camera phone can do. Like 80% of the photos of my Eagle have been taken with my Samsung Galaxy S II.

The brick structure was what used to be called The Grotto and it was an old hotel back in the day. The railroad used to end in Missouri in this town called Newburg...that's as far West as it went (There was actually one of those huge circle turn around things that took the Train Engine and spin it around so it could head back East). So this was just one of the hotels in town that was right off the railroad and right off the river. There is another hotel in town called "The Houston House" and it is supposedly haunted. The grotto burned down years ago and all that is left is what hasn't fallen down of the original brick structure. I can't find any info on it online really, but I do know the guy that owns the property now and he might have some old pictures of it or something.

Thanks for the compliment on my honey! :) I like her! She was really interested in the rocks. She loves gems and jewelry and stuff so I think she was trying to find a diamond in the rough! :)

Picked up a Thule Roof Rack. Came with the 4 rain gutter feet, 2 bars (missing one end cap), and the front windscreen...which was rubbing against my roof so I took it off for now.

Also got a ticket when I was headed back home from the transaction. Pulled over less than 1 mile from my exit because the hi-po noticed I was a little more than a month behind on getting my plates renewed! Jerk!

Nice ride!  Tickets suck.  I saw your turning 40 vid on facebook.  Glad you captured the moment... and with a perfect soundtrack.  Congrats on finding a lady that can share your love for your car.  That might just be more rare than your mint eagle.

I don't want to ruin the surprise, but I've got an idea in the works that requires some wood grain vinyl...do you know what would be a close match the pattern on my Eagle? I'd rather not pay a whole lot and I don't need much either. Like 2'x4' at the most! I'm not like vinyling the whole car or anything! :)

What do you think...close enough match? It's not actually going to be anywhere near the woodgrain on the sides, but I still want it to be pretty close.

Yeah, that looks good. A nice match for the original woodgrain. I think I guessed what you might do. If your only doing a 2x4 strip, then maybe you are going to go over the THULE wording on the front of your roof rack?

Good guess and also something maybe worth vinyling,, buy no! You can keep guessing if you want...it might not be something you'd think would ever be vinyled, but it's subtle and I think will look pretty neat.

Of course the officer. Don't be silly. I realized he probably gave me a ticket because about a year ago in my other car when I was trying to sell it I went 7 months without renewing my plates...finally got pulled over. This time I was sincerely clueless to my plates being expired! :( I took care of it today and called the number he said and they told me they don't handle claims like trying to make the payment less or completely removing it...I'll have to plead not guilty and try to see what happens in court...but now thinking back at my previous offense there is probably no way I would win. UHG...So the roof rack just turned into an 167 dollar purchase for a crappy used rack! :)

It has nothing to do with the rack! But it might be cool to do the windscreen like you mentioned earlier...I'm not a fan of the huge THULE lettering on it...it's much bigger than I've seen on other Thule windscreens.

Ok, enough with the teasing...here is a HUGE hint as to what the woodgrain is for! :)

I'm currently striping all the crud and paint off of it. Do you think I should prime/paint before putting the vinyl on? My only worry is that I believe you are supposed to use water to help apply the vinyl and having water sitting on the bare metal just doesn't sound like a good idea.

Awhile back I was hoping to buy this set of turbine wheels for TQ and the guy ended up having a more local guy buy them prior to me making it to KC. They guy that bought them however did not want the spare or the center caps so Original seller sold me the spare with the 4 center caps for 20 bucks...a pretty good deal considering most sets of 4 that I've seen of these turbines are going from like 200-300 bucks even if the wheels aren't in great shape.

This wheel isn't in real good shape and while I had the wire wheel out I thought I'd see what it would do on the wheel. Looks like it would clean up real nicely if I went at it for a bit...still need 3 more wheels! :)

You can see along the outer edge and inner edge where I tried cleaning it up with the wire wheel. I also did the one spoke in the center of the pic. Should clean up pretty good. The hard part will be getting the spots between the spokes.

How about wire wheeling the parts that you can get to, and then painting inside the spoke area the body color of your car?   Then you could clear the entire wheel.

Yeah, I don't own an air compressor...so it would be more than what I'd want to invest right now...would require the compressor and media blaster setup. I might see what I can do with dremel and a smaller wire wheel.

You could maybe take the wheels to a shop that does media blasting.  Cost should be pretty reasonable.  Then get the wheels powder coated, although I'm not sure if they can do woodgrain powder coating  :rotfl:

I'm pretty stoked! Finally found a full set of the Turbine wheels and the seller isn't asking a fortune...there is even some useable rubber still on them...though I may have to just take them off and sell them as they are 31 x 11.50 and I'm pretty sure that's going to be way too big. Now I'll just have to figure out what tires I want to put on them!

Here is the crappy mock up I did awhile back.

And here are the wheels I'll be purchasing.

Nice wheels! Now ditch the big tires and a set of p215/65R15'S blackwalls will set them off nicely. Been looking for a set of those wheels myself. So far I have found one. It was his spare so it never seen the ground and looks as new. Only need three more and then I will be happy too! Anyway nice find and good luck with the tires and what ever tires you decide on.

eagleman...I too purchased a spare from someone...it looked like it had seen some use though. I just finished wire wheeling it and it looks pretty nice. I'd sell it to you, but it would probably cost me like 25 bucks to ship it...so you'd be looking at 50+ bucks for one wheel. It's up to you though. I don't really need a spare one...I have no where to put it and I'd rather not spend the extra money to buy another tire for it!

Rafe, those don't look quite right.

The AMC "turbine" wheels have a lot of narrow slots in them. The "turbo cast and turbo cast 2" wheels are more what these look like. However the AMC Turbo Cast wheels are 12 spoke, not 10. They were also 14".

These look like American Racing "Vector" wheels that are 15x10. They only have 10 spokes so they are a close looking wheel, but not exactly. You can find them all over the place.

Well the wheels are officially in my girlfriends possession! She's so good to me. The wheels popped up on CL Kansas City last night and I asked if she'd get them for me and I'd pay her back when I see her this weekend. She's taking the train to STL and we are going to a concert Friday night. Glad I got a girl who will help me out with my addiction.

We did have her meet the guy at Union Station where the Amtrak is and her dad was dropping her off so it wasn't creepy or anything! :) This is like the 4th time I've had someone buy/transfer parts for me from out of town. It's been working out nicely. I have good friends and family!

Unfortunately I'm not actually sure when I'll be able to go to KC next to pick them up!  ???

I mean did it damage the aluminum or anything.Had a friend who tried that and really messed up his wheel.Probably depends on how course the wire wheel was.Anyway yeah I am interested in your wheel. Not to crazy about the shipping cost but what is is I guess.I believe the other wheel I got shipping cost was around twenty five also.Seems to be about the going rate for shipping wheels these days. I can't seem to be as lucky as you and find a full nice set close by.

I can almost guarantee its a vacuum line issue. I always had my problems with the vacuum motor on the front axle that engages the hubs....that or the one on the t-case. The motor itself is usually OK, mine have always been either bad hoses or even more often dry rotted rubber couplings...either way its a cheap and fairly easy fix.
