Can someone tell me what would cause a steering wheel to split like that

I didn't read every single post (ok I admit I only looked at pictures), but my steering wheel is split and cracked in probably 10 different places.  My best guess is that whatever material they used dried out over time and became brittle, along with lots of handling it just cracked after a while.

Next weekend I plain on going out to the kammback and get it ready for transport (running, driving, and stopping) already worked out details to have it picked up during the fallowing week then dropped off here at the house so that we can start getting it ready to be shown at the summer car shows along side the wagon.  More than likely it will have a flat black finish for this year and during the winter months get a nice coat of blue like original

As much as i would love to make "eagle rod II" I think that the kammback is going to be restored back to stock with a rally console and aftermarket gauges.  I am pretty sure that was kyle's plain with the car as well.  From time to time i will consult with him if I am stumped with what to do because if this car ever see's the market again i made a promise that he gets the first chance to purchase it.

This WILL be going to the meet this year, but it will be going in primer flat black and maybe the interior restored


Since i am so new to the kammback is the gremlin's interior from the doors back a direct fit in or did they change the eagle quarter interior trim?

Route66Rambler would be that question as he has a Kammback and Molly Blue, his Gremlin.  I would think they would be similar.  I have been in a Gremlin, but I have yet to see a Kammback in person (that might change with tomorrow's road trip).

I believe it MAY be different since the Gremlin has that famous "curved" window..whereas the Kammback has a longer window and then curves down.

Not bad.  That car has a lot of potential.  I like it.  I have never seen one of those in person though.  I am not sure why a steering wheel would split like that.

My SX/4's steering wheel is split the same way, except on both the top and bottom...

I think that would be the case.  The Gremlin had the Richard Teague signature rear quarter window profile.  The Spirit did not.

Unless there is separate pieces in which you can use pieces the don't involve the window... But most likely, it's all one piece from the door all of the way back to the hatch. That's how it is in my SX/4, I would imagine it's the same on a Gremlin or Kammback.

I think the pieces that are next to the rear seats are the same, but the pieces that are in the back end are different.  I don't have my Kammback at home to compare the two so I'm working from memory here.

No, there are pieces that go from the door to the wheel well, and then other pieces that go from the wheel well and wrap around the back. This applies to both cars.  Also in both cars there is a wide metal strip that is just below the window and on top of those trim pieces.  I may be able to take some pictures of the Gremlin interior tomorrow, but its too dark right now.

please oh please take lots of pictures of both the kammback interior and the gremlin interior.  Right now the interior is out of the kammback and i will be the first to admit i am clueless on how it goes together or how it is to look once together
