Red Headed Step Child - 84 Sedan

Hello all! lol, Don't mind the name  :rotfl: , I guess it's time to bring everyone up to speed on what's happening with that free Eagle I go from Nate last year (I said I would when the time came).
In case anyone has forgotten what this car is, here's a refresher.

Girlfriend like to pick on this one so it's now my GingerCar, hahaha.

So anyway, I dragged it home on July 22nd, and have been tinkering with it a little each day getting it ready to hit the streets. As I mentioned before she was a non runner when I picked it up, after some evaluation I decided to go a head and just drop an HEI unit in rather than try to figure out the wiring issues with the moto set up. I had a couple HEI'S laying around so I just needed a gear, with no such luck finding one locally (was always told use a 304/360 gear), I decided to adapt the 258's gear to it.

The obstacle here, is that the HEI shaft is a smaller diameter than the motorcraft, and the roll pin hole is too low on the gear. Pin hole no problem, however the bushing needed, haha good luck, I had to improvise and make my own.  I dug around my stash of junk and found a bushing that could be modified to fit my needs, then proceded to drill my hole in the center to fit the HEI shaft.

As you can see, my hole was not straight, now comes the fun part, how in the *&#@ was I going to grind the bushing down to proper size, and get it back to round in the same sweep. A lathe would do the trick nicely, dad happens to have one, but not at the house, though probably not easily accessible (IE: buried), and lets not forget, I have no clue how to use one. Enter my creation to create a part (don't laugh just yet, I assure you I was 100% sober when I came up with this idea).

Hold back!

The video of this contraption actually working.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlZK64ruOK4&list=UUkWqswXkESAmK12JBwVFPFw&index=1&feature=plcp

Sounds crazy but this haggard Red Green inspired apparatus made the bushing I needed, as well as truing my cockeyed drill error, hahahahaha.

Here it was.

Now here it is,

and running crappy, lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t15PcgqU22Y&list=UUkWqswXkESAmK12JBwVFPFw&index=2&feature=plcp

Found a few other issues here and there (new cooling system from radiator to waterpump, engine bath, valve cover remedy, tv linkage renew, etc, etc), so currently I'm in process sorting out my fuel systems woes, then it should be pretty close to streetable.

:rotfl: That's true, in order to be truely Red Green inspired, duct tape is mandatory, lol.

As I mentioned above, fuel system needed some attention, Dropped, drained, cleaned, and under coated the fuel tank, new fuel pump, new hoses, filter, and carb clean out. Finally running half decent idling, but stalls on decel while driving, likely a vacuum issue, I'm thinking anyway.

cj radiator installed no shroud yet, have to go yard hunting.

back up and running

We've all heard the horror stories of the reman store bought carburetors......I think I have a dud motorcraft (thought it was my water:fuel mixture, lol), I messed around with what looks to be a "reman" 2100 carb with nothing but failure. The first botch I found, whoever installed the throttle plates, put them in crooked, no wonder the engine raced on start up, they couldn't close all the way. After several nights of messing with it I gave up on it, to #$@! with that POS. Again I turned to my junkyard find 2100, (only strayed away from it due to it flooding over), pulled the lid, cleaned it out, threw it back together, new base gasket, made some adjustments and as of friday night, I have a properly running, Eagle, vacuum leaks gone, carb responds to adjustments, idles well, and has good steady vacuum.  ;D

http://youtu.be/unj2QZw22hY

So now that it runs good I figured it was about time to make it look a little less like a junkyard rat. So saturday night, I spent a few hours with my polisher to bring back a little shine and clear up some age spots. Made quite a difference, but man is the paint thin, I tried using my real buffer on it and it buzzed through the paint in an instant :o . Finished it off with a nice coat of wax, yeah I'm warped, or maybe the beer told me to do it.   :rotfl:

That was about it for the weekend, other than removing the rear seat for some clean up, so far no good, it's mighty greezy so that'll be some scrubbing on my end, lol.

Do you have a rug doctor carpet cleaner? If not you can rent one pretty cheap and do what I did. I used purple power degreaser and mixed it ten to one. Dumped it in our rug doctor and used the upholstery attachment tool and cleaned the interior with it. Seats, carpet etc. Came out looking as new if not better. Give it a try you won't believe just how well it works and its easy to boot.If you want it to smell really fresh pour a little aqua velva after shave in with the cleaner.

Good idea, thanks for the tip, scrubbing has been unsuccesful, so I had the gf throw the cover in the washing machine (on delicate, she ensured me it would be ok), lol, I'll see how that came out tonight  :rotfl: . If not satisfactory I'll give the rug doctor a whirl  :occasion14: .

I may just keep my eye out for one specifically for the cars and furniture, I have one for the carperts in the house, but no car attachment unfortunately (yes I did try it on the seat covers anyway though, didn't work out so well  ::) ).

If you want it to smell really fresh pour a little aqua velva after shave in with the cleaner.

I think I'll stick with fabreeze,  :rotfl: .
