Eagle was running great, all the way from New York State to the West.
Yesterday, a record hot day here in Nebraska, the engine blew and a guy in Roscoe, NE confirmed that #4 and #6 wires don't change the RPM, and at least #4 has no compression. Blow-by has flooded the air filter and coated the back of the Eagle and the front of the small untility trailer I was pulling.

So I need a 258/4.2 engine, or something with one in it.
There was someone around Agallala Nebraska had one for sale around six months ago, but we can't find a listing for it.
Currently stranded at Truck & Auto Alignment in Ogallala, NE, 308-284-4518.

Any one who knows of an engine/vehicle?

Thanks,

eaglefreek

Mam, that's terrible, good luck. You can use  car-part.com to try to locate an engine.

You can also use a 4.0L and swap the 4.2L externals to it (much easier to find) The carb intake alignment and exhaust from the 4.0L are the hardest issues to overcome.

I just did a CList search on all the areas in western Nebraska and came up empty other than a 4.0.  There are a couple 258's in Denver, 400 and 225 bucks.  Let me know if I can help.

Not looking too good around here.
The only one near here is from a jeep, so the oil pan and some others have to be swapped too (more $).
They want $1,200 for it. Mileage unknown. I can blueprint one back home for that.
:'(
Wrong weekend to be doing this too.

Reports of a lady around here with a whole running eagle for sale for $600, around a month ago, but no one can find it now...
arrrggggh

Push rods ok?
No idea.
From the lack of noise, assume it's just blown rings, but the values could be bad too. It's quiet (except for the blow-by putt-putt) running on four cyclinders.
Oil and coolant appear to be separate so far, but there's some dirt in the coolant (which was new and pristine after a flush) and no metalic particles in the oil (puzzled). Local quote to rebuild the engine is $2,000.

Appreciated.
Are the 258's out of Eagle's or Jeeps? If out of an Eagle, saves me ~$400 labour here, swapping things over.

These two were both from Jeeps.  I swapped a Jeep engine into my Eagle, its really only the oil pan and pump that needs to be swapped if I remember correctly.

Looking further down the list there are a couple that are listed as AMC 258's but they are older posts so not sure if they are still available, one is listed for $150 and still runs but owner suggests rebuilding because of high mileage.  Might get you where you need to go though.

Make sure it's an 80+ block so that it has the bosses for the front axle mount.

Find a cheap XJ with a hitch and tow your Eagle home, then swap drivetrain!

Found a couple other ones on CList here in Denver.  The $150 one won't work its from a 78.
