There's been a casualty.
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:50:45 PM »
The unthinkable happened today. Not five minutes after I'd gotten home from school and was inside changing into my pajamas I heard a huge BOOM outside. I thought 'hmm, that sounded kind of close, let me look out the window.' Black smoke engulfed my Eagle coming from under the hood. The hood is bulged up in the center and it looks like its bubbling.

I run outside, screaming "SH!T!!!" and pop the hood to release the pressure, but then I saw the flames.

Called the fire department in a manic panic exclaiming to the dispatch woman that my car is on fire in my driveway.

A policeman comes not a few minutes later, and I'm like "Where is the fire department?!" The policeman replies that they are on their way, and he speaks into his walkie-talkie something along the lines of "Yep, it's on fire."

FINALLY I hear the sirens. I'm just standing on my porch watching my baby burn. BURN. There's stuff falling out from the bottom of the car on fire, the smoke is incredibly large and just thick and black, you can't even SEE inside my car because of the smoke.

It felt like forever but the fire department got the hose up and running and started to spray 'er down. I had already "unlocked" the hood to pop it but they were having trouble and I couldn't possibly yell over the noise to explain to them to turn the latch thingie to get the :censored: thing open.

Then they grabbed the axe. I held my breath and prayed they wouldn't have to hack into it. Thank God one of the fireman figured out the hood and lifted it up, revealing HUGE, FIERY, ANGRY DEPTHS OF heck to shoot out from under the hood. The flames were a good two feet high above the open hood door.

They doused the flames with their magical water foam and I was nearly crying in hysteria and anguish over my prized Eagle. Literally, as it just won 1st place not three weeks ago.

They got the fire out, they didn't have to spray inside the car, and now I'm in complete and utter shock and despair.

My dad finally gets home after I call him at work as the fire department are taking their leave. I'm standing in the driveway in my pajamas just staring at my car.

The :censored: car blew up. Exploded, practically.

Here are the horrible pictures of the aftermath. It hurts me just to go outside and see it sitting there all sad and lonely and depressing.

I warn you, you may tear up.

We have NO idea what caused it exactly. The d@mn thing was off when it blew. I can't imagine what would've happened had I still been inside the vehicle. If I were on the road and it happened I don't know what I would've done. Run like heck, I guess. It was horrible. There are no words to describe my pain.

The first thing I said to my dad when he got out of the car was "Do we have to throw it away?!" to which he replied, "No, we can rebuild it."

WE CAN REBUILD IT.

My Eagle is better than your Jeep.

My dads 87 eagle did a similar thing only it had just been running and I was in it, it was also in our driveway, we got the fire out by spraying the flames with the fire extinguisher and then smashing the grill to get the hood open and shovelled snow on it then the fire dept came to verify it was out, we caught ours at the point where only engine damage occurred no paint damage, but the carb, valvecover, and wiring all melted and vacuum lines, fortunately we had just had the car appraised at $7000 so the insurance helped pay to fix the damage.

How long ago did that happen to you?

I wished those darn firemen would've been faster, but I'm just thankful they got there at all, of course. I just saw all the stuff melting and I was like "THE QUICKER YOU SPRAY IT, THE MORE YOU SAVE!"

THAT TOTALLY SUCKS!!!  I would vomit if I saw my wagon in flames.  I have this image in my mind of your dad getting out of his car, smoking a Malborro, all calm, cool , collected, like "ah no biggie, we can rebuild it".  And rebuild it you should!  How bad is the interior?

Whew... I was really worried at first. I mean, she looks bad... but man, it could have been so much worse. You actually got off pretty good. All your plastic still looks good, you still have bumper caps, interior survived...

You just need some upper engine work, a wiring harness, hoses, and paint that hood... and of course you need to figure out what caused it...

...but considering what could have happened... be happy bro. Your Eagle will fly again! Stay focused. Now you can rebuild her... make her stronger... faster... more agile... then it... it wil be alive! ALIVE!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *hiccup*

Haha I was the one smoking. I was so stressed out all I could do was stand there and stare at it. The interior is actually perfectly fine, it was only under the hood that's super bad. The inside of the car smells horrible of course. I need to wipe everything down because it's got a light film over everything.

I couldn't even think I was so upset when I saw it up in flames. I couldn't even cry I was so upset. The fireman was like "I can tell you're a fan and that you're quite attached" and all I could do was nod. He saw the other two Eagles in the driveway so he was like "It's gonna be okay."

Oh I know it'd could've been much much worse! My mom was like "What if you were in it when it happened?!" I just kept staring at the particles melting off in flames and wanting the firemen to put it out much much faster so it would salvage more. It was so distressing though. I'm just at a loss of words.

The grills is pretty much shot but I think I have a spare, but danget I just painted that one along with the headlight frames...:<

My dad's working on getting my Kammback up and going so I can get to and from school. Who knows how long this rebuild will take...a lot of money that I don't have right now. My dad was like "Maybe it's a sign that we need to perfect it before you drive it, you know, lift it more like you wanted and such." All I could do was stare at him. Haha.

That is awful ... and I know something of how you feel. I had a small oil leak at the valve cover and occasionally could smell hot oil. I let it go ... then one day it happened :'( . I had just got home and took the dog down to the woods to do his thing. After about 15 minutes in the woods we were on the way back up to the house when I saw a gray cloud of smoke drifting across the yard. Yep it was my eagle, my walk turned into a run for the house and the extinguisher. Lucky the hood release hadn't melted, and was able to pop the hood and get the fire out.   Looked alot like yours under the hood. Took about a year to get it back on the road.
I have lots of parts and if you need any let me know ... If you are serious about fixing it, make a list and I will see what I can do for you.

Thanks guys, that really means a lot. I'm still in shock about all of it. My dad was immediately positive about it, which is good.

I'll scrounge up a list soon and get back to you. I anticipate it'll be a long time to get it back to normal, but I'm hoping no more than two years if not sooner. But who knows.
