Jeep Ranchero-kee
« on: November 13, 2011, 11:11:01 PM »
I went to the junkyard yesterday and found this Cherokee which had been modified to be kind of a Ranchero/El Camino/Pickup truck.

ive seen a couple of those running around here. I talked to one guy that did that with a bronco 2 and although it looked really cool he said it opened a whole new can of worms with water leakage and rust issues. If i had the skills and money i would love to do that with a junk yard eagle wagon....kinda do that whole subaru baja thing

all I can think is the modern "SUT's" Sports Utility Trucks. like the Ridgeline, Avalanche, Baja,  and explorer "Pickup" type, and the new "Rampage" that's suppose to be replacing the Dakota... I just have to wonder though, WHY DOES EVERYTHING NEED 4 DOORS!? (Sorry... I had to do it)

This is a common conversion. The four doors can get away with it without strengthing the frame, tho obviously they should be strengthened, while the two doors straight up need stiffeners added. The two doors won't fold in half instantly, but they will bend and distort over time or fold under offroading stresses. I plan on doing this to my two door cherokee. I want to use an MJ tailgate, and might use the MJ rear cab section with the little window like this guy did.

ive been looking for one to do this too.... there is a really good example of one in the indy area cl.
mixed martial artist are like pit bulls. were highly trained and bred to protect our family, our property, and ourselves. But when someone rattles the cage and gets bit they aim to put us down like their stupidity is our fault. I am a cage fighter, does that mean i want to hurt you outside the cage? No. will i stand there and let you beat me because im trained to fight inside the cage? No. If you pick a fight i will defend my self, regardless of my training or your lack of. if you get hurt i may feel bad but in the end the fault is yours. If your to stupid not to start something you cant finish the i suggest you stay on the porch.

Hey that Pacer Pickup looks pretty cool - and very well done!!

That red 2 door cherokee looks really good too!

I just have to wonder with those type of vehicles, what good is the pint-sized bed - you can't really fit anything in it!  Might as well have the covered inside storage for luggage, valuables, etc

while XJs tend to get converted for wheeling reasons.

That makes a lot of sense, but doesn't explain the Avalanche, the Baja, or the Explorer pickup - those vehicles never see the trail, and the bed is still useless  :rotfl:

The Cadillac EXT and the Lincoln Mark LT were the ones that really blew my mind. The craziest thing is they actually sold quite a few of them....of course I never thought I would live to see the day that Toyota has a NASCAR team and Hyundai has a 50,000 dolla v8 luxury car....sign of the times I guess.

I was going to take a 2dr XJ and graft up to the B pillar from it to the front of an MJ. The cabs are too dang small for a 6 foot tall, 300 lb guy like me!

NOPE!  That 4 Door J truck was a totally custom build combining a Wagoneer Bod and rear of a J-cab.  THere are actually several examples of this... one was even on the last Cabelas vehicle "vote" for coolness!

I did one of these myself and doing another one, however, I may use a 2 door Chero body rear... ala avalanche, etc...

Have a great weekend!

Got passed on I-80 by an interesting AMC today....

Sorry for the picture quality.  I had my good camera, but these are taken thru the Saturn window going somewhere between 45 and 70 mph.  I think he knew I was taking pictures, and was messing with me-kept changing lanes.

Actually I had to slow to about 45 mpg, so it could catch me.  Looks to be pretty well made.  Looks like he cut the top of a back hatch to make the back window.  I liked it a lot.

Just to keep yall informed - the shape of the top of the MJ Comanche cab and the shape of the top of the XJ Cherokee roof-lines DO NOT match up easily, and much fabrication and patchwork time will be spent there. Believe me, I wanted to build one with my MJ, but decided it was best to not cut up my really clean truck just for a tiny XJ back seat and have to shorten the bed or live with a ridiculously long but narrow vehicle. The proportions wouldn't be right unless it was lifted and sat on tires on the order of 37's. It just looks goofy near stock ride height or slightly lifted. The 2dr XJ mini truck(red one, first page of thread) is one of my favorite custom XJs.

And too bad there were no factory 4dr J-trucks, or an Eagle El-Camino.
