Why is my shift stick so loose?

Bought an old 81 sx4 with 230000 kms... Shift stick is very wobbly ... Why?

On the end of the shift lever is a nylon sleeve. If that is gone it will have a lot of play.

I took my shift lever out, do you mean on the y shaped piece that goes in
the the transmission, or the actual stick, the nylon piece on the stick is fine...
