Shift Housing Fluid.
« on: January 27, 2016, 03:35:37 PM »
I'm getting ready to drain fluids from the transmission. trnsfer, case, axles and shift housing. I've searched the Epedia and found that the shift housing needs 5 ounces of fluid but I can't find what fluid is needed. Is it the same 85W-90 that is used in the axles?

Does the transfer case for the 4x4, does it share the tranny fluid of the transfer case? I've put Amsoil ATF in the transfer case in my 87. Is that right?

Interesting thing about the transfer case. I know the factory installed Dexron II which was current at the time but on page 2D-10 of the TSM when installing the transfer case they mention to fill it with 10W30 motor oil.  On page 2D-1 however (6 pints of Dexron II ATF only) is recommended. I changed the fluid on my previously owned Eagle and found he had used 90 wt gear oil.

If you try to research the web , depending on which site you are on , each manufacture that used NP cases says you have to use their brand of lube . I don't think it's that critical as there are no clutches or bands to burn up . It would just be seal compatibility .

DEXRON is for GM... I'm using Chrysler/Jeep ATF from Napa

The case was built by New Process, before New Venture Gear came along in '93. Chrysler ATF is expensive semi-synthetic designed to "cure" the lockup torque converter shuddering and failures in Mopar style transmissions. Any oil that can handle heat well (motor oil broke down too soon) and flow in different temps (not 80w90!) plus protect the bearings and seals is the right fluid. Dex 6 is okay too, but I prefer synthetic Dex III (Dex II is extinct like a dinosaur). For longevity under rough conditions, I like the Amsoil ATF which covers the most requirements of any economically affordable oil for this purpose.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

I picked up NAPA Synthetic ATF that covers most all areas. I didn't have enough AMSOIL here at home. So that is what the transfer case will be getting!
