rear shoes not fitting
« on: May 17, 2015, 11:48:44 AM »
Has anyone else ever had trouble getting new shoes on? Passenger side went fine drivers side won't wheel cylinder won't collapse far enough and is keeping the forward most pad from sliding into position at the top.  I got it all together and had a good half inch space at the top fulcrum point. :help:

Ebrake cable assembly sticks and forces them open like that. I pulled the cross lever out and the shoes fit correctly. Did you know there are 2 different kinds of shoes in the kit? Shorter ones go on the front of each side.

Grooves in the backing plate can catch the shoes and keep them from retracting all the way (I've welded some and used epoxy on others to fill the grooves)

Yup got the short pad forward. I'll go after it again tonight. Just wondering if I was alone with this or has it happened to others. Thanks Carnuck

Never happened here. Provided both sets are the same size. Meaning replacements and drums. No telling on the previous owner maybe one drum is smaller than the other. However you should have noticed that when hooking the shoes to the back plate.

That reminds me of a CJ Jeep my buddy had which had 9" brakes on one side and 11" on the other. I figure the PO replaced an axle and didn't bother to change the backing plate from the other vehicle or lost his old one.

Make sure the park brake strut , the link that goes between both shoes, is in the right position. There is a front and rear on it . If you have it flipped it will hold your shoes open, or applied position.

Ok folks went back to work on brakes tonite, the only thing that makes sense is the wheel cylinder. So while I am ordering parts(might as well do both) can anyone name and/or number this part?
I'll likely have to replace this and the lines as well

That's the rear brake hose or flex line depending on what they call it.
