Since I took a cruise along the highway in my 86 Wagon, I realized that it needs a bit of attention in the area of sound proofing. I don't have some of the interior in it yet (going to soda blast and repaint properly). This summer I'm re-gutting the interior and going to spend a few days going through it again in order to dampen the ambient hurricane noise when I drive.
Besides the floor, which I've laid Ayrfoil on, along with a new carpet, I've been wracking my mind thinking of places and ways to soundproof.
Floors : Ayrfoil / carpet. Ayrfoil is a silver "bubblewrap" type of material. It's proved to work nicely on the floor.
Ceiling : I think I'm going to Ayrfoil this as well before installing the headliner. Or I may spray a light rubberized sealer on the back of the headliner.
Pillars/Ceiling edges : These are all hollow, I've debated filling them with expanding foam insulation but I think that this would cause more issues than fix. I've put pipe insulators inside the hollow area along the ceiling. It may pay off more to leave these alone.
I think that spraying the back of the plastic panels with something like Leakseal (
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/rustoleum-clear-leak-seal-0670040p.html ) which is thin but leaves a rubberized type coating would stop a bit of sound and work nicely. There's a lot of plastic to remove, and since I'm planning on it anyways that will be 1 route I go.
The areas that I have the most problems are :
- Doors
- Firewall
- Rear hatch area - wheel wells - the large gap from the outside of the car to the inside metal cavitates sound and the plastic that covers it does nothing.
For those areas I may have to swallow the cost of buying a spray on sealer. The old stuff in the doors is coming off in chunks so I need to replace that as well.
