Shifter kicked the bucket today

Driving my 84 wagon around today and realized I can't get into park, or first. Finally got it to go into park by forcing it but then it was stuck there and I couldn't get out but I was out in the middle of BFE so I had to go. Got worse and now it won't go any farther down than drive and no higher than neutral but getting it into neutral is hard.

My question is have any of you guys had this issue and what can I do to get it fixed? The trans is working like it should but the car ain't driveable as-is.

Is the button on the side of the shifter still working??

Kind of seems like the adjuster on the shift rod is slipping. That is under the car and connects the trans to the shifter.

The button on the shifter is now stuck as if it were pushed in but when it first started acting up that wasn't the case.

Gotta get it into the garage so I can get up under it but before I can do that I have to get it to back up.

Could be the shifter linkage underneath, mine was acting up and it was the nut on the top of the tranny where the linkage connects was loose

Hard to do much under there until you can fit it lifter up some

If ou can take the bezel off of the floor that is around the shifter, is the ratcheting part of the shifter that locks it into gear move when you press the button, or since it sounds like the button is stuck in, is the small lever lifted up?

You can take the shifter off inside the car (if I remember right) and lube it as well as access the linkage. My lever was bent on my wagon when I got it and I had the same problem.

Took the bezel off and the issue is entirely with the shifter handle. The button is pressed in but the ratcheting part is stuck down. I did find a piece of metal broke off that resembled but was not a rivet. As a temporary fix I tied a string around the ratcheting part so that I can actually move the car. Gonna hit the boneyard on Monday and find a replacement. I just love how simple the shifter is on the AMC!

I thought so. I had a Mustang II circle track car and about the only stock part was the shifter but I never compared them side by side with the Eagle. I know the MII shifter is the same as the Pinto/Bobcat.
