Suspension for 85 Eagle wagon
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:23:47 AM »
I got a 85 Eagle wagon for a daily driver. The car sat 8 years an tires were dry rotted it had factory 195's on it I went to 215's an they are to close to the body.  I am thinking bout putting 80's Jeep Cherokee leaf springs with Monroe Sensa Trac shocks & struts & 80's Jeep Cherokee springs. I am wanting to add the heavy duty tow package from the factory to it. Was told I need suspension replaced were it sat. the question is what would be a good suspension to put on it for a daily driver that does hauling an towing?

I can't answer most of your questions, but I did add the Monroe SensaTrac shocks to my Kammback and it lifted the back end up about 1.5".  Rides pretty well with them, but I do no towing.  Good luck!

yea I am planning to add the factory tow package an brush guard skid plate protection an a light bar an give it more of a off road look. I am planning to take it to jeep fest an things like that I went from the 195's to 215 70 R15 an looking for more height without the modified sticker. I am going to have it in the shop to fix the trans in bout a week an fix the suspension an some other stuff once it gets out of there an start driving it again. So far i am just planning to tow like a small trailer an use it to haul stuff an a lawn mower an weed eater an do side jobs with the car so I dont have to use the truck as much for side money nothing major.

Jeep Cherokee coil springs won't work up front. Stock replacement springs would have to be custom made or for some lift, go with some Moog springs for an AMC Javelin. You'll have to search the Nest to get the part number. For the rear you can add sa couple leaves per side from a Cherokee or other leaf spring pack that is 2.5" wide. Finding a hitch is going to be the hard part.

Uhaul or any other manufacturer hasn't had a Class III hitch available for some time. A few years ago a memeber said they got the last hitch in Uhaul's system. You will need to find a place makes custom hitches. If you don't plan on towing a bunch of weight, you can get a bumper mounted hitch.

Not really, sometimes they show up on here or that E auction site.

Bumper mounted hitches are a bad idea for these cars or anything that uses the same rear bumper.

I don't think I'd use it for anything heavier than a log splitter.

This isn't the Nest, I believe we can say such horrific words like eBay and Craigslist again...but I guess I'd have to let Doug chime in on that...

Sorry to side track again, but my Aunt lives in Plano and I usually visit a time or two a year. You don't see many Eagles in TX!

As for the hitches, my old '80 Eagle had a hitch on it. I'm not sure if it was the Uhaul one, but it was welded to the frame in the rear on both the left and the rear side and then also bolted to the underside of the bumper in 4 spots I think. I was working on removing it until I found out it was welded to the frame. :(

I've since deleted almost every picture I had of that car cause it was terrible purchase and the PO completely lied to me and I sold it for less than half what I paid (and was promised the new owner would get that hitch off and give it to me, but after they purchased they never returned my texts/calls.) so I wanted it erased from history! :) You can see the hitch in this photo though.

I have a receiver hitch that I pulled off an 85 wagon that I will be putting on Eagle Eyes and it was not welded on, it is held on by four bolts by the gas tank and by one u bolt with two nuts bumper. i'll have to get some pictures of it once I get it cleaned up and undercoated.
