XJ sunvisors
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:15:02 PM »
Finally got fed up enough to get rid of the remains of the visors in my Eagle. Went to the junkyard and grabbed a set from a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. I thought it would be a straight forward bolt-in swap but it wasn't.

Here's what I started out with

The OEM pedestal mount for both visors is made out of REALLY light duty flimsy plastic and cracked

The XJ visors are a good bit larger than the factory ones

The good thing about these visors is that they have a METAL pedestal base instead of the flimsy plastic. Both mirrors also have power

The XJ visors are wide enough to hit each other when they're closed. Had to mount the end catcher things in line rather than side by side.

I also added the rear view mirror with map lights from an S10 Blazer. I'd like to find a narrower set of visors that would work with an overhead console. I didn't wire the visors up because the headliner is getting replaced sometime in the near future and a different set of visors will most likely find their way in. On the passenger side the power wires for the original lighted mirror come out between the headliner and plastic trim thru a narrow steel tube and I couldn't exactly wire them up right without removing the headliner.

Overall it works but it's not exactly the cleanest install. Had to drill all new holes for the mounting screws. The visors also drag on the headliner when you push them over to the window. It takes a LOT of clocking of the mount pedestal things to get them to work right. It works but if you're looking to swap visors into your Eagle I'd recommend finding narrower ones.

If you guys know of something that works better please post up!

I used to have a ton of S10 Blazer stuff, never thought of checking to see if they work on the Eagle before I got rid of it all. Who'd have thought the 80's S10 Blazers would ever get hard to find in the junkyards.

Any idea as to what years had the metal mounts? My '84 definitely did not...lol

Not sure if it was an upgrade from 84 or downgrade. or just luck of the draw.
