Shifter cable broke

My shifter cable broke and have to now figure a way to get the car out of park and into drive or reverse.

Any ideas as to how and where I can find a new cable to fix it.

Any info will be greatly appreciated

When mine broke I made a temporary workaround shifter using wire and a piece of pvc pipe for a handle until I was able to replace it.  I can't seem to find my posts about it- they may have been part of one of the great deletes.
You can actually shift it using your thumb when you have the handle off.

The handle was already off. The cable had streched some so the handle was not working any more. Now the whole cable broke of. I guess after 33 years I should complaint to much.

Here is the info from that link.  It is currently in a restricted area while the Eaglepedia is secured:


There is a very small cable running from the T-handle down through the shift lever to the latch underneath the shift quadrant. The button operates an equally-small bellcrank that pulls the cable to release the latch. That little cable has broken, probably at the top just below the bellcrank. This is a common problem and repair options are limited. What I did is take out the shift lever and remove the latch. I can now freely move the lever but it has no provision to lock it in "Park". It's not the best nor the safest fix available, but at least I can operate the lever.

Removing the shift lever is not a big project. The T-handle can be removed by striking upward on the underside with a wood block. The shift quadrant is held to the floor with 4 small screws. Once those items are out of the way you can reach into the bottom of the "well" with a 9/16" wrench and remove the nut holding the shift lever. The latch will likely fall out in your hand once you take out the lever.

I pulled the pin on mine so it slides easy so I have to be careful (cable was broken by PO)

Here is my temporary fix for the broken cable.  It worked well enough until a very helpful member by the name of mudkicker sent me a shifter assembly.

Just an FYI, the shifter is the same as some mid 70s Fords. Pinto, Maverick, etc.
