1977 AMC 258

I have found a 1977 258 out of a jeep 1977 CJ5.
Low mileage in very good shape. Great compression and vacuum. All seals and gaskets replaced new distributor and wires,
Will this fit in the 1983 SX/4 what would I have to change to make it work? Would like to go look, is it worth the time?

Someone here may correct me but I think pre 80 engines dont have the mounting bosses on the engine block to hold up your from axle

I know that's the case for engines out of cars anyway

Look on the driver's side of the motor for the bolt holes that attach the pinion bracket to the motor. If they aren't there, it won't work unless you plan to only run 2wd.

Yes, those pre-1980 engines won't work.  The 1980 and newer Jeep 258  engines will work in an Eagle, but you need to swap oil pans and oil pumps from your old Eagle engine.

It's possible the Jeep doesn't have the original motor so it doesn't hurt to look. If it ahs a plastic valve cover, then it's new enough to work unless they put the head on an older block.
