I have an 84 eagle wagon with the 4.2 engine and auto transmission . If i try to take off fast something shakes (i think its in the tranny ) but if i let off the brakes and take off slow no problem . I just replaced the tranny mount and it drove fine for about 30 minutes and then started it up again ??????? I am lost . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated .

Also make sure your transfer case is all the way engaged. I installed my transmission and a different transfer case a couple years ago and had the same issue. On mine the transfer case wasn't all the way in 2wd. Search false neutral on the forum.

Check the throttle position rod adjustment as well. It will increase pressure on the clutches.

Thanks for all the good advise . Changed fluid and filter no change  :'( . Checked to see if the transfer case was engaging and it is still same problem . It feels like something is slipping or not engaging at a certain rpm if i give it more gas it stops ???? Where is the  throttle position rod located ? Thanks again for all your help .

it is attached to the throttle lever on the carb via a bell crank and goes down to the left side of the transmission. Search throttle rod adjustment. Some call it the kickdown linkage.

Think '84 may have still had lock up torque converter, could be the problem.

That is a pretty decent product, but did you already adjust your rear band inside the trans?

no not yet . is it located inside the pan ? how do you adjust it ?

Thanks for all the help  :hello2:

Drop the pan (after fluid draining) and loosen the rear band adjuster, then tighten the screw and back off 2.5-3 turns and lock the nut.

How many miles are on the trans?
Could very well be the rear band loosening up like carnuck mentioned.
My 2nd gear band broke a few years ago with 120k miles on the car, so I had the whole trans rebuilt when I pulled it out of there.

Adjusted the band new fluid and filter same problem  ???  :banghead: Car has 96000 miles on it .

Does it shift hard or lightly?
Worst case could be clutches slipping.
Maybe try running some lucas stop slip in the ATF.
It worked well for me when my trans was high miles.
