Speedo Gear Housing Alignment to Transfer-Case
« on: November 24, 2012, 11:56:15 AM »
I pinched the lower speedo cable flat when I put the left-front strut-rod bracket back on.

  • Once freed from that bracket, and unthreaded from the cruise-control sensor, the cable came out with one bolt-on clip and one slip-in clip.
  • With the bolt and alignment bracket off, the speedo housing and gear came out with mild force, and disassembled easily (two clips, needle nose pliers to get the broken end of the cable out of the gear).
  • Lightly greased the replacement cable and slipped it into the sheathing while keeping it clean from dirt & dust. Added the housing and clipped it in place. Added the gear and clipped it in place.
  • So just when I thought this is about one of the easiest things I've fixed on the Eagle, I went to put it back and realized that I didn't note the orientation of the eccentric housing to the transfer-case...

Went to the internet to read, and was informed that for

Speedo Gear Housing Alignment to Transfer-Case

I should:
  • count the number of teeth on the gear
  • select the matching teeth count range from the three ranges on the exterior of the gear housing and note its alignment arrow
  • locate the raised dot on the transfer-case opening (on my NP128, it's to the left of the locking bracket's bolt-hole)
  • insert the gear & housing with your selected range arrow aligned with the raised dot on the transfer-case opening

So I inserted and aligned the housing, bolted it in place with the locking bracket & nut, ran the cable through and threaded it onto the bottom of the cruise-control speed sender.

Only no speedometer and no cruise control.

What could I have done wrong?

I might suggest that you take an old piece of cable (or something that will fit the square inside the gear) and try to turn the gear.  If it turns, then you know where the problem is.  If you turn the eccentric until it feels like the gear is meshing with the drive gear, then that should be the correct spot to tighten it down.

The spot indicated by the method I found, is also the place there I could feel the gears mesh.
I'm wondering what else I could have done wrong.
After some reflection, I'm wondering if with reaching up through to attach it at the other end, if I managed to let the inner cable slip out as I tightened down the threads on the collar. Which would likely mean that the inner cable got jammed in there and wound up and broke already...   :(
