TF 998->AX15
« on: July 23, 2012, 04:27:42 PM »
Can I swap my tf 998 to ax15 manual and use original non-select drive transfer case?

The Jeep AX15 was factory-married to the Jeep  New Process 231 transfer case it has 23 splines output shaft. Does Eagle transfer case use that same? And do bolts fit?

Depending which AX15 you get it may bolt up just fine. There are different input shaft lengths on transfer cases and I think our cases have the longest of the lengths available. You may have to cut down the input shaft or add a 7/8" spacer between the transmission and transfer case. According to this link you should be fine. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np_nvg_input_gears.htm

Hmm that is interesting...

Splines are the same... and the bolt circle...

How about length of automatic vs. AX 15+bellhousing ?

The AX-15 and AW4 need a 1" spacer ring to fit the Eagle and FSJ tcases because they are shallow and the the trans output is longer. Beware some early year XJ trans are 21 spline (till 08/90 for the AW4s)

Never used a spacer.

However I. Am pretty certain I used the eagles intermediate housing for an aw4.

So, what have I learned...

I can take out old tf998 and flexplate and replace them using AX15 manual transmission and bellhousing. is it that simple? Everything is bolt on?

What if ax15 comes from 2,5 diesel motor? Does diesel bellhousing fit to Eagles 258? If not, do I need 4.0 part or can I use some Jeep 3-speed parts? and then external clutch linkage?

Gonna have to say that no external clutch linkage will work. its very tight down there.

I'm going to the junk yard to rip out the whole clutch assem. with external slave, out of a nissan sentra. i just put a new motor in the wife's sentra and the clutch goodies are small and i think will work perfect.

Toyota diesel? Jeep put the AX-5 (I think) behind the 2.1L turbo diesel Renault motor in XJs.
