Broken leaf is it dangerous to drive
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:21:23 PM »
Heard a clunking in the rear and finally traced it to a broken leaf on the pass side.  It is the 2d leaf up from the bottom.  This is my daily driver and wondering if I'm flirting with disaster.  The other leafs appear to be fine, but I never noticed a crack in the one that broke (not that I check it very often).
For replacement, car came from VT so the bolts are pretty rusted.  How have others broken them free?  Thanks.
Marty

some good penetrant (like PB blaster) and heat will do a dang good job or breaking loose rusted bolts

If penetrant and torch heat don't work; you're just going to have to brake them or cut them off.  If it was me, I'd just go ahead and break/cut them off however I could, and get new bolts (I never trusted reusing rusty hardware anyway).

x2 on that...spray the bolts a couple times, day or two ahead of time, to let it soak in a bit...using an air impact will help break the bolt free after soaking as well...

You can just get some leafs from a Cherokee (plentiful in wrecking yards), and build up your spring pack.  As long as the main leaf is not broken, Cherokee leafs can be added or just used to replace the broken ones.
