Front is OK, but I'd upgrade the rear!

The whole rear end, the 2 piece axles themselves are the weakest park.  My SX/4 is getting a Chryco 8.25 with 3.07 gears partially because I have it, and partially because I don't think any of the other options(D44 or Ford 8.8") are significantly better given how I'll use the car.

Jeep Cherokee '90 up. I got mine for $25 because he didn't like the 3.08 ratio (and neither did any 4x4 guys) I'd say between $0 and $150 is average. Shock mounts need changing

Yup that's about right, the local u-pull yards are 100-150 end to end, find an XJ with a manual, 90+% chance it's a 3.07.

Most likely you'll need a different front end. There are several castings for the front housing and they use different cases. Certain combinations can use normal gears, but most are 2.35 only. There are several threads on it.

If I'm reading my notes correctly the 324 1220 axle assembly listed for 82-83 is the one that will take the 3.07 gearset, but the 89 33 000 754 used it 83 will not.

ha that was kind of a confusing mess. should I just try to find an earlier front axle and get a new ring and pinion for it?

If you can get an axle that's not 2.35 it'll be a sure bet for a swap, and you'll probably be able to find a 3.07 because they were available every year but '88.

I have a pair of 2.73s (near Seattle) with vacuum front. I haven't pulled them yet, but will as soon as I sell my van.

what options are out there?

I don't know if there is a one piece axle kit for the AMC 15, but honestly, it would be cheaper to put the Jeep axle in. By the time you buy the gears with proper ratio have them installed and purchase axle shafts, if available, it would cost you probably close to $1,000.

Eagle Wheel Mounting Surface (WMS) is supposed to be 60.75

Many AMC/Jeep vehicles are in the 60-61 range. You have to move the mounts on the axles around.

That opens up the Dana 44, AMC 20, and the Chrysler axle some people have swapped here.

I think it's hard even finding replacement shafts, there was a thread a little while back about adapting one-piece shafts for the Eagle axle, and I don't remember the outcome. However, that would be the easiest if it were available.
