the banshee (now for sale!)
« on: April 28, 2012, 01:16:00 AM »
I just bought my first amc eagle, (named her the banshee) :hello2: and im quite happy with my find :) a 1984 wagon auto.
everything thing that's been done to it.
-truck bed liner and painted grey
-after market off roading lights in the front on the roof, grille guard and on the back for the roof for reverse
-all the vacuum tubes were removed from the carb and caped off runs awesome
let me know what you think. im slowly working out the kinks, (exhaust manifold is cracked, and clean the motor)
eventually i would like to put in a jeep motor and drive train.
I'm new to the amc community so anything i should do to it let me know! thanks!

the interior is immaculate!

Looks in good shape.
The one thing I'd do if it was mine, is I would rip off the fake hood scoop instantly.
I can't stand them.

Looks like a great deal. Is that a Jeep Liberty light bar on the roof?

The one thing I'd do if it was mine, is I would rip off the fake hood scoop instantly.
I concur.

Congrats on your purchase and joining the Eagle community.  I had seen this car for sale on C-List in Greeley, CO.  It looks like you have the exact same grille guard I do!

Welcome and congrats on the Eagle. It is a very nice color combination. Can we get some close up picks of your roof lights? They look really nice like that. Don't think I've seen that on an Eagle before.

I just bought my first amc eagle, (named her the banshee) :hello2: and im quite happy with my find :) a 1984 wagon auto. (paid 1,000 for this sweet ride!)
everything thing that's been done to it.
-truck bed liner and painted grey

-all the vacuum tubes were removed from the carb and caped off runs awesome
-no name rims
let me know what you think. im slowly working out the kinks, (the transfer case pops into four wheel drive occasionally, exhaust manifold is cracked, and clean the motor)
eventually i would like to put in a jeep motor and drive train.

Those off road lights on the roof almost like the ones you could get on the Jeep Liberty Renegade...they look great! These do have the same motor as the jeeps of that era but many folks here have either completely swapped in a 4.0 engine or did the 4.0 head swap which can turn out pretty descent numbers and still keep within a budget....Congratulations on an awesome eagle and welcome!

thanks for the tips. as for the hood scoop i actually like it haha so its staying. i know its the same motor as the jeeps but i would like an upgrade eventually to a efi set up and lift it for light off roading. ill be going to back school in a couple of years and this will be my project. yes i am in the general area of colorado im actually located in cheyenne wyoming. i got the luck of being stationed here ha. i gave the steering wheel cover and that ugly zebra print windshield cover to the previous owner. as for the valve cover i already saw first hand the ungodly leakage. i have the fortunate luck to have a junkyard with 4 of these beautiful cars put to rest and are just sitting there begging to be pilaged. as for the tach sadly it doesnt work  :( going to work up the motivation to take apart the dash to figure out why its not.
things i worked on this week.
-fixed the old cracked valve cover with one taken out of the junk yard in great condition just had to clean all the crap off. so much built up grim on it.
-replaced to exhaust and intake manifold gaskets to start it up to only find out that my problem lies with in the manifold itself (a crack)  :banghead: waste of four hours replacing gaskets and cleaning intake and exhaust manifolds.
-changed oil and oil filter. (stupid sales associate sold me an oil filter to the four cylinder model) :banghead:
Left to do next week
-pilage a used exhaust manifold and a new driver side arm rest from junkyard (the one in it now is purple... doesnt match ha)
-figure out tach issue
-do a transmission filter and fluid change
-replace two light bulbs on roof lighting so it will be even brighter   ;D
-clean up engine and get all the grim build up off of the front undercarage.

so far im happy besides the occasional problem of car wont go into 2wd and i have to guzzle gas in 4wd. i keep having to go under the car and manually switch it back with a wrench anyone know if i replace the vacuum on the transfer case will this fix that problem?

thats awesome do you know if i could just do a direct swap or is there any modification needed to be done? i would love to do this. the junkyard in town has plenty of inline 6 jeep cherokees! id obviously do a rebuild of the donor head but is there any modifications? id love to know!

Tougeagle did a very in depth write up of his head swap but Ill be darned if I can find it right now. Theres only 2 major things that need mods, your new exhaust and the water ports on the head. Here is a pretty descent write up on this conversion i have stashed in my favorites. http://www.monsterslayer.com/pages/jeep/40Head/40Head.htm

P.S. make sure you put in a 4.0 cam to get the most out of the head swap. The 4.0 cam has much beefier lobes than the 4.2 and will allow the heads to perform at their full potential.

When you're off-roading remember that tree branches and roof lights don't mix.
I don't think that's a problem in Chyenne.

Left to do next week
-figure out tach issue

I haven't heard of anyone that has successfully fixed a tach that wasn't working.  I recently discovered that a Ford F-150 tach makes a nice replacement and is an easy swap.  Pick one up while you're at the local junkyard.  Here is my How-To on doing the swap.
