transmission chatters and jerks in reverse.

I drove my eagle for the first time in quite a while today....been at work 24 7 it seems. I don't often back up further than the length of a parking spot but today I had to back up about 100 feet or so. The transmission made a very chattery sound and it was very jerky. I know manual transmissions usually make kind of a whine in reverse but this just sounded sloppy. I guess I should mention I have the beloved Sr4 4 speed. Is this a normal sound and behavior for these or do I have bigger problems on my hands.
AMC, serving up heaping helpings of AWESOME since 1954
