SO two years ago, I upgraded the ignition system on my 87 Eagle according to the Eaglepedia forum ignition upgrade. I put in a new hotter coil, 8mm wires, changed out the distributor cap and since then every once in a while the car will die. Just shut down. Not sputter, just running and it's like you turn off the key. I have a new starter solenoid too, new battery, new vacuum lines, overhauled the carb, new fuel pump...it's getting fuel but it is like it loses spark. It will start up again. Someone on here suggested that my coil got too hot and they replaced the coil again and it was fine. Could that be my issue? P.S. my timing is set perfectly...I checked that today too.

Sounds like it could be either the coil or the ignition module.

When you upgraded the ignition system, what ignition coil did you use? And did you bypass the resistor wire?

I think it may be the flame thrower coil from O'Reilly. I know it has the male end on top of the coil.  I did bypass the resistor according to the instructions on the upgrade.

Believe I would try a new or different ignition module. Had a 82 eagle that we bought new and several years later it did the same thing. Several dollars later I finally changed that and problem went away.Put the old one back on just to see and it did it again.Put the new one back on and forgot about it!

Mine did the same exact thing when the Petronix coil was going bad. But a bad IM will do the same thing unfortunately.
