Need help in Portland OR
« on: March 14, 2012, 09:19:39 PM »
Hello All,

I was gifted with one of these most epic rides last September. I exchanged my F250 pick up with my father hoping for something with a little fuel economy. Unfortunately this has been a tale of "Be careful what you wish for." What was a turn-key car began mysteriously dying on the road home the very same day and gave me night terrors all throughout my honeymoon. The carburetor fell out of adjustment, the starter blew out, the battery died, the seals popped. It screams, and squeals, and stalls. I could drive it better with the hood up. Today the heater motor burned out and I drove home in a cloud of smoke. The wife refuses to ride in it. This is not what I had in mind. I'm a handy type of person. I replaced everything you could think of in my truck but I can't tell my head from my smarter end here. I live a long shot below the poverty line but I can't keep my assets this way. I need to find someone who really knows these superb vehicles that I can pay for the specialty concerns and will cut me loose when it only needs some wrenching. So, please, who's in the know in Puddletown?

I know it's a long shot, you're going to think it's stupid but here goes:

GET OUT OF PORTLAND!

Quote
But Daemon what about my trip to-
upupupup no you're just confused you've forgotten how to judge correctly...Take a deep breath...

Look at your Eagle...

LEAVE PORTLAND. NOW.

I don't understand the mysterious binding force in the N Portland area but once you enter, that car isn't leaving in one piece without a mass-miracle. Leave and you can finally start getting stuff done correctly.

You're welcome. :-\

You have strong opinions, sir, and I like that. However, I cannot leave Portland, you see, I refuse to use deodorant and have been refused passage through any adjacent state. If what you say is true then there must be a diverse and secret society of poor saps such as myself. Please take me to their leader.

I'm usually in Washington or Oregon so it doesn't matter. I just go by what my car is doing. Vancouver makes the transmission a little edgey, the border makes it almost violent and then my engine starts killing itself the second I'm in Portland traffic and it quickly becomes a panic to get off the road. I know my WA/OR Eagle isn't the only one doing this or the junkyards wouldn't be getting so many of them every 3rd month.

Must be a post 1981 phenomenon as I have driven many an AMC product successfully through Portland.  My '82 Hornet went out of warranty not far from Portland and it kept on going Eastward for another 2,000 miles and then back again a week later.

I had my '84 wagon to Portland and back as well as the "other" Vancouver and back many times. I killed the converter neck several times before I went to swap in a 727, bought an FSJ, found it had a 999 and at the same time the Eagle had frame rot where the rear springs mount so I swapped the motor to the '83 Cherokee.

Okay, but it's chewy, gnarled and almost used up...

This is the "simple" solution. The 727 would be the most ideal replacement until you can pick an overdrive unit but they're almost as rare as the A500 at this point. Good luck finding a grand wagoneer with the right transmission. The Cherokees are all junk, the Grand Cherokees pollute the yards with annoyingly useless electronic dependencies, the part yards keep crushing the wagons and if you're ever lucky enough to find a manual transmission bolted to a 258, good luck pulling it free in one piece. I'm starting to get very desperate at this point. I'm thinking of pulling automatics from Pioneer and ComandTrac Jeeps.

I'm shocked no-one has jumped on the T18/NP208 I have for sale (along with 360) for $500. Is it priced too cheap?
