My new purchase...1981 Kammback
« on: March 14, 2012, 05:03:49 PM »
I just bought a Kammback!!  I bought it sight unseen..which scares me alot!
It's, "over on the Coast," near Seattle about 5 hours away.

It has 80,000 miles on the Iron Duke engine with a four speed transmission.  Supposedly it runs fine but the starter is going bad.

I am pretty excited about getting it.  Saturday is going to be a long...long wait.

I asked that same question today when I had him on the phone.  He said no rust. From the pictures he sent this evening...I didn't see any.  Here in the N.W. rust isn't really an issue...thankfully.

Nice find.  Appears to be a DL model.  I see in '81 the DL logo was not found on the front fender, but the upgrades tell me it is a DL.  When new the DL was $399 more than the base model. A good value as the individual options would have cost a lot more.

But it's sitting on grass.  there might be some underside rust - But let's hope there's none.   I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

Wow, what a weird legacy. Has the new front end and grill, but the old hatch and lights. I like the interior. O_o

The rear hatch and lights appear correct for an '81 Kammback/Spirit.  Are you thinking back to the recessed tail lights found on Gremlins?

My brother and I went over yesterday to bring it home.  Sadly, it's still there.  I got the exhaust and the starter problems fixed, but it bucks and heaves when its being driven down the road.  Not sure what is going on there.  But at 5:00 p.m. and a five hour drive back home...I put it in storage and headed home.

The previous owner said it sat under a tree for many years and that the owner wouldn't sell it.  One day the guy called and said that his computer died and if Steve (owner before me) would fix the computer he could take the car.
Since then he, rebuilt the carb, clutch, distributor (which I suspect is the causing the bucking and heaving), and put new tires on it.

There's no rust (except the rear springs which have surface rust) to be found anywhere on the car.  The interior is exceptionally nice.  With a good scrubbing it should look like new!  I was told that the car had about 80,000 miles on the odometer...it actually has a little over 28000.  With little to no wear on the pedals, and with the condition of the interior and the undercarriage....I would lean towards 28000 not 128000.
Not bad for $600.00.
