what is needed to put in the np229.   does it hook up to the eagles vacuum or does it need other parts?

Which means that the front axle doesn't have a disconnect on the right side, just like the later versions, to use the lowrange on the 229 you would need to rig a shifter anyway, for the range selection, if you wanted to also have 2/4 wheel selectable you'd also have to fab some kind of mechanism for that.

The 229 needs to have the vacuum switch and actuator for 2-4wd operation or something else fabbed to work the 2wd-4wd selector. High and low range is changed with the floor lever. The 229 is a full time case while the 208 is a part time case. A full time case can be driven in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. A part time case needs to be on a "loose" surface or something will break eventually.
Another option is a 219, if you can find one. It is essentially a 119 with low range. You can also wire the selector on the 229 so that it stays in 4wd which will make it like a 219.

Regalwizard whet did you get the 208 out of? looks like everyone used this transfer at one point or another. are they all the same?(as far as putting into our eagles?

208's were available in full size Jeeps.

No need to dig. I have the full scoop right here! ;)

Jeep NP208 used '80 to '88 in FSJs as an option. All FSJ 999/727 automatics and 6 cyl 4 & 5 speed trans came with 23 spline (same count and depth as the Eagle input) If it's (factory) V8 with T18 4 speed, then it uses a Ford NP208 (31 spline input) because to save costs Jeep went with the Ford trans and case together with a Jeep bell.

Dodge NP208s are 23 spline (except behind some of the the Cummins diesels and V10 which were 29 spline) BUT they are mirror imaged to the Jeep/Eagle tcase.

Chev NP208s are also backwards and slip yoke with the weakest internal components in the 27 spline cases. 32 spline have a stronger, larger input bearing setup (like the Ford one)

Quick recap for those suffering TMI overload:
'80 to '88 FSJs came with the correct NP208 as an option except V8 4 speed.

Quick way to spot '80+ FSJ is look at the front driveshaft. Driver's side is '80+ and pass side is pre '80.

Also note that the front driveshaft of the Eagle will bolt in, but you will need a longer rear one (5" from memory, but it's a bit shaky) and the yokes from your old case may need swapping to fit the Eagle ujoints.

Now who wants a granny low T18a/NP208 combo with a running 360 for $500? Even comes with FSJ pedals and linkages. Trouble is I'm near Seattle.

oh! You guys are the best!! it would seem the 229 is the best option here. just got back from a cruise with the wife, we love this car!! but i have the 86 so i have that fun open transfer that grinds when you go into 4x4 so i dont use it. the 229 i like because its able to drive on dry pavement and you get low range. but that being said if i was closer to Seattle i would probably be calling you.
