Here's the scoop (<-- ex-trans tech specializing in Mopar trans) 998 and 727 share valvebodies. 904 has a different valvebody (Eagle 6 cyls have 998 and 4 cyls are 904)

The 727 rebuild kit is different from 9xx. The clutches, steels, bands, converter and drums, planetaries, case are all bigger.

There is lockup and non-lockup versions of both.

I've got a Transgo kit for a 904 in mine. I forget which stage but it works great. The directions are horrible though.

I was directed to TRANSGO by a friend who read this:
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/torqueflite-tom-hand.html
- and TRANSGO has the shift kit for the 904 (as mentioned above) and the 998 has been said to have (basically) the same internal as the 904 except bands + tidbits
-SOOOOOOOO I GUESS I WILL CALL TRANSGO AND GET THE INFO FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH
ABOUT THE 904 KIT GOING INTO IN THE 998

Rear band is wider on 998 vs 904. Discs and steels are the same.

i know tci has a REAL nice kit to rebuild your trans with. i have a tci 904 in my drag race spirit with a healthy 360. i BELEIVE that the 998's and all will take the 904 stuff. HOWEVER!!! you have to be carefull and make sure they are for a lockup trans. (my 904 race trans is not a lockup) might go for a better converter, and look for a kit for a tf with lockup. iirc, any valve body "shift kit" for any tf trans (727, 904, 999,998 ect) will work the same. just make sure its for a lockup converter if you have a lockup. they are different for lockup/non lockup.

if im wrong, someone correct me. internals are different for the 9xx trans and 727, but according to summit, shift kits swap between 9xx and 727.
You are correct. Depending on brand, shift kits usually just consist of a plate that reprograms the transmission, springs, balls and miscellaneous gaskets. My kit came with pan gaskets for both the 727 and 904. I used the Transgo TF2.

So there would be no limitation/problem using that same TF2 transgo kit in my 998 - Did your kit go into a 904 or 727?

And while were here- isn't a 727 a straight bolt up replacement for a 998 1988/258 except for the length of the dip-stick on the 727?

BTW - I'm looking for a new/rebuilt 998 If I can find one priced fair - unless I can use a 727 - not sure I'd go 904 though

It went into a 998. I had it rebuilt to TF999 specs. I think it gets an extra  clutch and a wider drum and band. Apparently they are supposed to be easy to rebuild and the price reflects it. I paid $650 for mine to get rebuilt and that included a new torque converter. I removed and installed it though.

I installed a Transgo "Mr. Shift" kit in my Eagle's 998 about a month ago. Still haven't gotten to test drive it yet since, but it makes a lot of awesome sounding promises. Probably my favorite is being able to check the fluid level in Park instead of Neutral. Hopefully it will prolong the life of my trans until I get the chance to rebuild the entire thing.

This write-up I came across on another site helped a lot when installing it: http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=20391.0
