Found another Eagle!
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:18:26 PM »
Hi everyone. I've been checking everyday on craigslist to see if an AMC Eagle turns up. Today, I may have gotten lucky. I found a 1981 AMC Eagle SX-4 for sale in Northampton (if its NJ or PA I don't know) for $1,300. From what the ad is saying, it needs some work. It has no radio, needs a front drive shaft, and the trim has to be put back on, but it also has fresh new paint. Aside from the things I've mentioned, there isn't anything else that listed that is wrong with it. Did the SX-4 ever come with the Automatic? It seems like everyone I see is a Manual, which is what I want. Even with the work it requires, is $1,300 a good price for this car considering it's one of the more harder to find models? Tomorrows my birthday and if this Eagle works out, then this will be the best birthday to date   ;D

Hope to hear from everyone soon!

'81 SX/4's came out with an SR4 standard and the auto was an option. The T5 manual trans didn't appear as an option until 1982.

1981 -The Kammback and SX/4 came standard with GM's 151 cu in (2.5 L) "Iron Duke" 4-cylinder engine, 4-speed manual transmission, and power steering.

1982 -New low-drag disc brakes were featured as standard equipment. A 5-speed manual transmission joined the options list. The optional automatic transmission received wider gear ratios for better fuel economy. The Kammback was dropped from production after this year.

1983 -Few changes were seen for 1983. The SX/4 was dropped from production after this year.

When it comes to any Eagle - the old saying really applies "Don't judge a book by its cover."
In other words, it may be pretty outside but the undercarriage is what matters most.

If it comes from Pa or NJ, make sure you crawl around real good under side of it. I bought one from up that way and it was a rust bucket, although it is not bad enough to drive. It took a lot of work to get it in the shape it is now but it still isn't perfect.  Paint is like makeup on a women, take them for a swim before you commit to them.

Yep, it's Northampton, Pa, just looked. Don't know why he painted it red. Axles aren't that hard to find and change, radio's, depends if your going to stay stock or put some bad a-- radio in it.  Like I said, go look at the underside real close, and front frame back side of the front wheels.

If you live in the area it may be close for you, or you cane look on this site and find a GOOD one, but your going to pay, they ain't cheap. Good luck and happy hunting

Thanks for the advice. We plan on going to see the SX-4 this Saturday 'IF' it is still available. I also recently came across ANOTHER eagle too! It's a 1985 Wagon with 103k miles and a fair share of work needed to be done. According to the posting, the paint isn't great, some vacuum hoses need to be configured, needs an inspection, needs a U-Joint replacement in the rear (new part included), and just like the SX-4, it needs the front axle for the 4-wheel drive. On the good side, it runs good, has new headliner, a custom steering wheel, aftermarket radio, new tires, and custom fog lamps. It's in Pennsylvania, just outside of New Jersey, so it's closer than the SX-4. I don't know the condition of the interior or the underside, but from the pictures, the body appears to be rust free. Asking price is $550 OBO. I'm going to try and get more information and see if me and my dad can go see this one too. What's your opinion on this one?

If they have it listed at 550, I'm worried they already know it's a rust bucket. Most people even with crappy Eagles are posting them for atleast 1000 unless they don't have a title or know it's only good for parts. If the underside looks alright though 550 would be a good price.

Thanks everyone, here's what's happening. The SX-4 apparently has a title issue and it could take the owner up to 90 days to get one. So I'm skipping this one. Me and my dad are going to try and see if that 1984 AMC Eagle wagon is still available. Comparing that one to the 1985 Wagon I recently found for $550, this eagle is a better deal since the paint is better, the interior is most likely better, we know for the most part what has to be done, we've driven it and know how it runs, and it has lower miles, all for about $750 more. Hopefully the 84 is still around and we can go see it tomorrow.
