Greetings from Virginia
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:22:35 PM »
I know it took forever for me to actually do what IowaEagle asked me to do when I joined, INTRODUCE myself.
So much valuable information on this website I get carried away.
I bought a 1985 Eagle Wagon Limited in Feb 2009 for $400.00 from a guy on c-list. He said it wasn’t a reliable car any more. First car I ever bought that I did not start nor did I drive it. Said the 4X4 didn’t work (CV Joints), same with the AC and heat. Heater core leaked so it was bypassed. The starter also didn’t engage on the flywheel. Missing teeth.
Remembering what I knew about them and old cars in general from high school and college. I didn’t see any major problems. Got it home the next day.
Bought a flywheel from Total Auto parts in Herndon. Found a mechanic to install it a starter and properly shim the starter. Had them replace all fluids.
Drove the car home a month later and started fixing every broken/missing part.
Bought new tires. started replacing vacuum lines.
Replaced the heater core. and vac line to it. Charged up the AC (needs this again) and it worked.
Disassembled and cleaned the carb. Actually my neighbor instructed me on how to do the carb idle tubes, had worked on them before. They do clog way too often.
Finally the following Dec found reasonable CV shafts. Car Quest Auto had those for about $65.00
Found a place to get the exhaust parts too. partstrain.com they said they ship world wide. Haven’t installed it yet. Trying to put it off till next summer.
Replaced the coil springs up front and leafs in the rear.
Still to this day I am gluing the broken plastic parts the P.O. busted. I think he broke ALL OF THEM. including the DASH. This I guess was when we was trying to figure out how to get to the heater core.
Still have the original am/fm radio, no residing in the garage. Installed a am/fm cd with remote and audio input. My Wife loves the remote.

Still need to reinstall all the trim. Removed it to fix what little rust is on the car. Minor rust around the side windows and along the bottom of the windshield. Some on the front finders at the bottom. No frame rust. The shackles should be replaced, quite rusty.
Replaced the flexible brake lines.
Removed the roof rack, the knobs that locked the cross bars in place were all stripped and the well nuts all leaked.
Replaced the radiator top and bottom hoses, thermostat and water neck. Have a water pump to install and I also want to get timing gears/chain.
Next on the agenda will probably be the fuel line, hard brake lines and trans lines to the rad. Electric radiator fan (runs hot in the summer). Alternator.

Sorry,  I missed the part about the electric fan. I installed dual electric fan and it works perfect ex rpt in the summer, when you really need it. I will probably put the mechanical back in
the in. Check the fan clutch, it may be the problem.

Looks like you are doing good work man. How hard was the radio to replace. I was going to leave my stock one in, but after trying out a tape in the deck it doesn't play properly. Sounds like it's playing at half speed. Did you have to remove the dash to install it?

Raif, I hope I spelled that right, go ahead and start a new thread in the appropriate section and some of us will discuss your options. DON'T DO ANYTHING like cutting the dash. That car is too pristine.  ;D There are options.

Wouldn't dream of cutting the dash! What do you take me for...a fool! :) I'll start a new thread when the time comes or if I can't find the answers using SEARCH!

I agree, the all black look is very clean. I love it. The trim pieces gone is also kind of nice. All body. I like!

I just noticed it has mirrors off of what appears to be a mid 80's chevy full size truck.

The mirrors were cheep chinese copies of Chevy mirrors. PepBoys and Advance Auto had those.
I will take pictures of how I removed and installed the radio and start a new thread in the how to section. I need to get into the dash again soon.
