how hard is it to get a 2x4 727 to be a 4x4 trans?

is it even worth it?

It would be much easier to locate an A-727 out of a Jeep.

Are you putting it behind a stock 6 cylinder? 727's are power hogs and along with the higher first gear ratio, you would probably be pretty disapointed in the results. Not to mention it would probably cost you just as much as a rebuild if not more to change it to a 4x4. The transmission needs to be disassembled and than a 4x4 output shaft installed and the transfer case adapter installed in pace of the tailshaft.

i have a 727 in my car and i  there was no real difference in performance besides getting rid of the piece of crap poor mans overdrive, as for changing the tail shaft to make it except a T case.... if you knew how to build trannys and had a short tail shaft  for a 4x4 727 i'd say go for it. is it a 727 for a AMC or Chrysler? i'm pretty sure mopar trans aren't the same bellhousing pattern

MoPar applications will not fit AMC engines.  Same transmission, different bell housing configuration.

Are you sure its a 727.  I don't think AMC used Chrysler transmissions until '72.  Unless Javelins were an exception.  I guess an AMC cased 727 could have been swapped in later since the torqueflites used in AMC cars were reconfigured to fit the V8 bell housing configurations.  The 4WD adapter on the back of the 4WD transmissions replaced the tail shaft on the 2WD transmissions -- its length and the the length of the transfer case are pretty much equal to the length of the 2WD tail shaft.  There are some significant internal differences that would require the swapping of parts.

Essentially, you would have to rebuild this one AGAIN to make it a 4WD... only the 727 from the full size jeeps will work.  You might as well just get one of those.

Where are you located?  I will swap you a working Wagoneer 4WD 727 for the RWD trans.  I live near Springfield, MO but travel regionally quite a bit.

What is this "Poorman Overdrive" you are referring to?

Have a great weekend,

Jesse

I didn't think it would be.  It would be a BW transmission.
