Picked up this NP242J
« on: January 24, 2016, 01:38:18 PM »
I know this is a common swap with plenty of info on here but just wanted to make sure this case will work before I dive in.   I plan to do a complete rebuilt including the chain, figure out the linkage and build it myself or buy a cable operated one. I also know the speed-o will need to be addressed.
Anything special I need to know about this particular model? I'm guessing its late 90's early 00's??  I have no idea. Got it from a friend that had plans to put it in his Cherokee.

Not too knowlegable but was built on 11-21-89. Need to check if input shaft matches output shaft on tranny.

New Process = pre '92 when New Venture was "born". It's probably 21 spline input and not 23 spline but it's an easy fit test.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

yep, on the transfer case the trans in is 21 splines and driveshaft out is 27 splines.
Time to research, hoping I don't have to search around for too many different parts to make this work.
I plan to rebuild the trans too, and install both fresh at the same time. stock from a 85 sedan so 998. not sure if that helps with any info.

Better to bail and get a newer 242? easier fit?

(Also Ill leave this here but open to replacing the trans to a different one (upgrade) if anyone has any suggestions that will mate up nice to the stock 4.2 and 242. plan to rebuild motor next summer with 4.0 head most likely).

Thanks!

If you are close to Seattle, I have a 21 spline AW4 "core" (it worked but ran several months 1/2 full of anti-freeze and 1/2 ATF after being cooked by a faulty radiator cooler)

In Chicago unfortunately otherwise Id be interested that or been looking at the 727.

Edit: the more I look into it I'm starting to realize how much of a pain it is going to be to track down parts (also just knowing what ones I need) to do a trans swap. Just trying to rebuild the TC then buy a new/rebuilt  trans off ebay.  attach the two then on a long weekend pull the old trans and Tcase and bolt in the new assembly. Trying to avoid having this car sit for another year.
Think I just finalized my decision to keep the 998 and rebuild. (or 999, because looks like a direct swap of a few parts).    AHHHHHHH too many options!!!!   like the 242 idea though so Ill stick with that even if I need to get a newer version. If a 23 spline is needed maybe Ill cut all the labor out and just buy a rebuilt 242 off ebay as well to save some headaches.

Sorry looks like I never have my mind made up. haha.
