Title: 1984 AMC Eagle
Post by: trout on November 03, 2012, 07:17:00 PM
After the Eagle I bought in August turned out to have a bad frame I decided to buy another one. Got a decent condition 84 wagon that wasn't running from a member on here. Just thought I'd share a few pics of the progress.

how it started
(http://i.imgur.com/kRMXkl.jpg)

started tearing it down to see how things were
(http://i.imgur.com/0ThMQl.jpg)

every time I took one thing off I seemed to find a reason to go deeper
(http://i.imgur.com/LUlm4l.jpg)

well can't really go deeper now
(http://i.imgur.com/4Jg3Dl.jpg)

not much left to take off except the front doors, the rest will wait till another time.
going to give the frame, undercarriage, and inner fenders a nice coat of por 15 and paint the engine bay
will eventually repaint the whole thing

applying the por 15 this weekend on the suspension components, hopefully have the rest of the front end coated next weekend.

then it's time to start reinstalling stuff.
also got some new CV shafts, new brake and fuel tubing, and new springs.

drive train is coming out of the original 88 I bought which had the tow package, so when done it'll no longer have the vacuum disco front axle, 3.08s, engine w/ aluminum valve cover, and also taking the front fenders and hood from the 88 since the 84 had some small damage.

Some more progress pics.

POR15 is done on the front end. Gonna build a temporary paint booth when I get back from Thanksgiving and start to sand to repaint the engine bay.

Shackles didn't work out, didn't realize how little room there was. Tried to track down OEM replacements but gave up after I called the last company to make them (Triangle) and they didn't even recognize their own part # on them.

Custom made some out of 3/16" flat steel and some grade 5 carriage bolts.

Rear axle is back in and I started some of the brake plumbing, will get pics tomorrow.

Priming in the engine bay tomorrow.

What do you mean by "plug"?  What was the problem?

What was the mess up?  Adhesion?  Texture?

Good thread by the way.  My wife has an '84 wagon the same color as yours.

I used regular por 15 then either black coat or royal blue flex coat to top coat.

It was the flex coat that caused a problem. The primer we used, House of Kolor KDA3000, had a bad reaction with it. Within a few minutes of the primer being sprayed a few sections just peeled off and it was as if the flex coat never cured. Kept having to wipe up what I could and spray more primer.

The flex coat had a month to cure and was sanded before we primed, it was probably just an issue of compatibility of the products.

POR-15 has a primer for it, so you can paint other paints over it.  it's on their website.

But you can't just use any primer, or put any paint over it.

Love the 1/2 paint booth.  Reminds me of some of those pics you see on the internet of a car sticking half way into/out of a building.  Nicely done.  Prime example of making due with the space you have.  Keep up the good work.  And keep the pictures coming.  I can read ;D but like pictures. :rotfl:

eh go figure. I gotta a little more por-15 to do I'm sure so I'll look into that.
It's been a learning experience. Had no problems painting over the por-15 itself or their plain black top coat.

wow, so it's been a month since I last posted updates

well all most all of the mechanical parts are back together.
got to replace the radiator. braze broke for the pitcock, not going to bother fixing a radiator with an unknown age. new one will be here tomorrow.

Trans, tcase, front diff, and drive shafts are in with new u-joints. Will be putting the new front CV shafts in later today.

new trans cooler lines are in. Found more issues with the front drive shaft and routing around the power steering than the exhaust. Using some hose clips to hold everything out of the way. Didn't turn out as pretty as I had hoped, maybe I'll redo them in the future.

In addition to the radiator I still need to clip down the distributor, bolt on the carb, hook up the wire harness, and charge the battery and hopefully it'll fire up.

Title: Re: 1984 AMC Eagle
Post by: trout on April 30, 2013, 12:34:01 AM
new radiator is in. distributor is set with the rotor on cylinder 1 at TDC. carb is mounted. everything mechanical is done in the rear, shifter linkage adjusted properly, cv shafts are in, so entire drivetrain replacement is complete and starting to put on the exhaust. decided to order new wire and terminals for both battery cables, starter cable, and charge cable.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but is your catalytic converter upside down?
On mine, the small tube is on the outside of the car, towards the rockers.

Air tube orientation can vary by manufacturer/model. I couldn't find a cat listed for an Eagle that had the flange so I ordered one for a Jeep and figured I'd cut down the length.

But now that I'm looking at the pic it seems the heat shield is different on the bottom and it looks like it is the side that would go against the car. Or it could just be the flash. I'll check it out later today.

A long time since an update.

It starts, it runs alright, and can even drive if you fill the transmission up. Some weird electrical issues still exist that are slowing being fixed, the engine idles a little funny, and the transmission pumps fluid straight out through the bell housing.

Bought a TF727/NP229 combo from someone who parted out a Grand Wagoneer.

Rebuilding the 229 using the back 1/2 of the case of a spare 129 I had. Some interesting things popped up that weren't in the how-to that's usually referenced (http://www.n0kfb.org/homepage/amc/tech/transfer_case/swap/). Was going to go with the 2nd option and then I realized that all the holes were evenly spaced and already drilled and tapped. The issue was with how the oil pump is made into the case the tail housing only sits in a certain way, and the tail housings seem to be identical as well. Going with the 1st option, though I wish I was able to keep the switch on the back of the NP229.

Got the rebuild kit off ebay for the np229. It was missing a seal for the oil pump, 2-3 weeks before bjsoffroad.com has them in stock and can't find them elsewhere. Also the big roller bearings that are towards the back are a different style than I had in either the 229 or 129. Both had 10 rollers that snapped into a cage but the kit came with 15 slightly larger rollers.

Here are some pics as it stands now:

finally been tackling the transmission. while I was waiting I rebuilt the np229 transfercase but I seem to have lost all the pictures of that.

dirty case:

after the pressure washer:

added an extra oil passage way:

upgraded to a bolt in sprag and kevlar rear band:

other upgrades: aluminum accumulator, extra wide billet rear servo and new pin, front servo w/ an extra o-ring, 3.8 lever, also have HD band strut and anchor.

relocated the breather, original one was tapped and plugged.

Also rebuilt the front pump, got a Hurst Quarter Stick and plan on a throttle valve cable from Bouchillion Performance for the transmission, and decided to modify a set of NP-205 twin sticks to control the transfer case (got the idea from a guy on ifsja.org who  already did it in an Eagle.)
