Title: Pepe's Paint Job
Post by: vangremlin on February 05, 2011, 12:53:26 PM
Most of you know the story of Pepe, my little Kammback, that was knocking on the front door of the crusher when I found it about 2.5 years ago.  Since that time I've brought it back to a daily driver condition by replacing the engine and having the transmission and transfer case rebuilt, along with a handful of other items.  During its period of non-use (1992-2008) Pepe's inside rocker panels took a beating, and so last September I took it to Pat's Auto Body in Denver to get those repaired.  As Pat dug into things deeper, he found more rust, including the outer rocker panels, it became clear it was time to fix everything right and also get Pepe repainted.  Pepe should be ready to come home within the next week or two.  Here is a teaser picture, follow the link to see the work that has gone on with Pepe over the last 5 months.  I'll try to fill in some details along the way, but wanted to get the pictures posted.  Pat did a great job, and i'm excited to be able to start driving Pepe again soon!

I don't have black bumpers now but if I run across some I may swap them in.  I found a good set in a junkyard about 1.5 years ago, and thought to myself I should grab them, but I didn't.

The grill does need to be touched up, I hadn't thought about going with an all black grill.  THat might look pretty cool!

Definitely going to get the windows tinted!

If you can't find a set of black bumpers I have a set of good chrome ones that I'm sure can be painted, in trade for the clutch master in that wagon in the junkyard, if it's still there...The front even has the factory driving lights.

Are those black stripes going to get an accent type of a pinstripe around them?
If so, what color?

Looking good. That's exactly what I intend to do to my Eagle when I get the funds for a paint job. It will be white with black stripes similar to these Hornets.

That will look very nice.  I know they had stripes similar to these on some of the Spirits.  My intention was to be a tribute to the stripes that were on the early Gremlins.

I may even get a "4.2 litre" sticker like they had on the Gremlins to put on the back, or get it lettered on.

I'm also leaning towards having "Eagle" painted on the stripes at the bottom of the door in the orginal Eagle style.

I should have stated in m y first post that your paint job kicks @$$ :D I ended up giving in to the decal demon, and picking up some chrome adhesive backed letters, just to the left of the Eagle badge by two inches is "4.2 EFI". Actually doesn't look too bad with the rest of the badging.

That copper flake is definitely excellent. I always thought to myself that if I had the option to get the car repainted, one of the many possibilities would be pure alpine white with high flake new penny copper trim...

Its a copper color, from Chrysler circa 2002.

I had to drop some parts off at the body shop yesterday, and he had moved the Kammback outside to move some things around in his shop, so I snapped a few more pictures.  I think it looks even better out in the sun!

WOW! that looks really close to the copper brown metallic, is there anyway i can have you get the exact paint code he used so that i can make a few spray out cards to compare it to the color on my eagles (my wagon is going to need a repaint after i pull the few dents out of it)

What color did you decide to paint the hood?

I believe he taped over the gas cap, although I'm not certain.  That will all be hidden behind the license plate once he gets it put back together.

I decided to paint the power bulge a gloss black color, you can see it in the first picture I posted in the thread.

It does look a bit like the bittersweet orange from AMC (which I like very much):

http://www.motorsnaps.com/d/23796-3/1970+AMC+Javelin+SST+in+bitter+sweet+orange_001.jpg

This is showing a nice trimline too: you could have a black trimline at about 1/4" below the black part.

I visited the body shop yesterday and he is beginning to put Pepe back together.  I brought home the grill and headlight trim to paint and need to get those back to him on Monday.  I will be ordering new emblems from Kennedy American, along with the rear marker lights, which are unique to the Kammback and SX4.  The car should be back together and ready to roll in a couple weeks!

Beautiful Kammback.  If nothing else the hood insulation pad stops some engine heat from ruining the finish on the hood, over time that is.

I was tasked by my body shop guy to paint the black parts on the trim on the front of the hood, the headlight trim, the grill, and the badges.  For the large parts we did extensive taping.  On the badges, the body guy told me I could spray paint them and then use nail polish remover to take the paint off the letters.  I was having trouble doing it that way so I sprayed the whole badge and let it dry, and then took the paint off the letters with steel wool.

I bought some new Eagle badges from Kennedy American but have decided to use the original ones I restored because they turned out so well and because they are metal.

I know that a "Super-Detailed" paintjob could cost upwards of $10,000 or more...that's what I've heard from some Camaro, Corvette, Mustang, etc owners...

to be honest it really all depends on what is being painted and who paints it.  i will admit that the body shop I work for if something very high end like a classic mustang, camaro, or the occasional sports car they do "pad the bill".  If you are seriously looking into getting your car painted just shop around. Ask to see photos, check out some cars in person that they have painted (before they are wet sanded and buffed is a real plus because you can see how clean they keep their booth by the amount of dirt in the paint), ask for a tour of the shop, and make sure that you leave with a written estimate so that you can latter compare prices based on your impressions of the shop and personnel.

It'll probably end up being in the $5000 neighborhood, which I think is a really good deal considering all the rust that was on the car, plus some minor dents and some hail damage.  I had gotten a quote from somebody that does really high end stuff, and he was going to charge me over $15,000 without any rust repair, that would have been extra.  I obviously wasn't going to pay that much, especially when I only paid $400 for the car, but the real kicker was when he said "You won't want to drive this car when I'm finished."  Some people are looking for that type of end product but not me.

I found this body shop on Craigslist.  Its certainly nothing fancy or in the greatest of neighborhoods but he does good work and takes a lot of pride in his work.  I originally took it in just to get the inner rocker panels fixed, but when we found more rust under the trim and he was willing to do it for a good price I decided to get the whole car re-painted.  Its taken awhile, but I think any restoration type repainting will take several months.  He's done it the right way and done a good job.

Thanks for your kind words Brandon.

Just a reminder to folks like you and Mavericke who have young kids and are trying to restore your Eagles - its got to be tough to try to accomplish restoring your Eagle and raising a family.  I know I could never have done it when my kids were younger.  That is an advantage we more "experienced" (I didn't want to call us older lol) Eagle owners have -our kids are probably older and off doing their own thing, which leaves us with more time (and maybe money) on our hands.  So don't get discouraged, the day will come when your Eagle will have a fresh coat of paint too.!

Not yet.  I think I'll be swinging by his shop in the next couple days so I will try to remember to get it then.  Thanks for the reminder!

She looks amazing! Badges and front end pieces look great as well... that's one of the first thing I do to all my Eagles is freshen up the black to make the chrome stand out. The chrome grills are getting really hard to find. Anyways, it looks great man! I'm very impressed... and jealous, LOL especially since that's the original color of my very first SX4 (The Millenium Eagle) and I've been saying I wanted to keep it original... that just looks awesome. Now I know what to look forward to.

if you think you'll have it back by the middle of may I'd love to make a slight detour on the way home from Salt Lake City, Utah to take a look at your kammy in person

I had the front seats rebuilt and recovered a couple years ago so they are in good shape.  I need to get the carpet replaced as $$$ allow.  And I have an 85 radio bezel that I will put in at some point, but that's as far as my plans go for now.

Thanks Mav!  I can't wait to get it back, because not only will that mean its all back together, but also that I get to drive it again. I've been going through Eagle withdrawals for the last 7 months lol.  Not that I needed the 4 wheel drive this winter, we haven't had much snow in Denver at all.

I'll definitely have it back by May.  I was at the body shop today, and he hopes to get it back to me next week, but I'm thinking he still has a couple weeks worth of work left.  If you're taking I-70 across Colorado its not a detour at all.  If you're going I-80, maybe we can meet up in Greeley at tougeagle's!

Probably because I bought new aggressive tires for my Expedition!
