This Eagle has been sitting for 6 years at my friends private AMC junkyard. He bought it in hopes to resell it fast, as it was in good drivable condition at the time. Which never happened unfortunately. I've been telling him that I wanted to buy one of his cars for quite a long time now, and finally decided to take action this week. I'm going to need a winter driver, so I thought the Eagle sitting under the wood shed would be a good candidate... So called him up last week and made an offer, and he accepted>So now I've got another Eagle! Yay...........But......It's going to need some work... The car was delivered to my school today, and I'm going to fix it up in my shop class that I have for 2 hours in the school day. It's going to be a lot of fun I think.
Anyways, the Eagle:
-It's a 1983 Eagle Limited Station Wagon. Yes with power windows, seats and locks, wow what a luxury! :o
-It was previously registered in Des Moines, Iowa up until 2000. Maybe IowaEagle saw this Eagle or something? lol
-It has 137,000 odd miles on the odometer.
-I put a battery in it, (not to start it yet, that would be bad without checking stuff first! :o ) and the power windows and seats work great. However the door locks dont work so well, not a biggie in my book.
-Has a good history of work done to it, and the previous owners kept up with maintence very well. Until, it came to Wisconsin. That's when I assume it was rear-ended due to some bumper damage, and all of the dents started showing up.
-Love the wood grain with the dark blue, it's just going to need some washing to get it looking good again, but that comes later. I wanna get it running again first. I'll let you guys know how it comes along.

nice eagle dude it's the same year and model as the one i saved but mine has the factory driving lights where yours doesn't but yours is a better color than mine.
great that eagle looks awesome for its age ,with a llittle touch up and some mechanics it would be in pristine condition, btw i love that one in blue greetings from mexico
Hey thanks for the positive vibes so far. :)
I probably should mention that the car had (hopefully not has :( ) a mice infestation... :( Smells pretty bad in there, and I looked in the secret compartment and found skeletons and mouse crap is everywhere... :( But the wiring seems okay, just the smell is terrible... gonna have to clean all that up and try something to make it smell better.
Be careful with bringing it to ur shop class I did that with mine in gr 10 and 12 and the frame and gastank got damaged, and other students messed with it >:(

Only place where theres the proper tools and lifts to use. Also my close friends in the class will back me up ;) As for when I'm not around, I'll have it on a drive-on lift and it will be up in the air for others not to mess with. I've already talked to my instructor about this.
Nice that you were able to save an Eagle. My power locks don't work well either, it's like the motors don't have enough power to lock them, but they are able to unlock. Very cool of your auto teacher to let you work on your Eagle in the shop. Like you, I also have auto tech for 2 periods a day, and I was lucky enough that my teacher let me keep my Concord in the shop for a month straight. Yes, a whole month (days/nights/weekends) on the lift in the air, while I replaced the spring plates, ball joints, strut rod bushings, strut rod, and after all that, an alignment. And the people at my school that take auto are usually not the most respectful people, but in that whole month that the car sat in there, no damage occurred.
Looks like a good wash & wax job is all it needs. Definitely check fluids before trying to start. Probably wouldn't hurt to pull the dist. first & spin the oil pump a few times to get some circulated first.

Terrible. My instructor is like my best friend basically, and loves the fact that I love AMC's. It's been funny in the years I've had Auto Class with my Concord and SX/4, it's always one car (mine) and everyone elses BIG TRUCK lol. The other students don't understand the 4x4 stuff i have on the SX/4, and he likes that I bring in something different than an ol Scottsdale, Cheyenne or Sierra...
i wish my school had still had shop class before i got there, but they decided it wasn't worth keeping. by the way as others have said cange all fluids, as well as plugs, plug wires, distribiter cap and rotor, and ofcoarse put new tires as i'm pretty sure those are badlly weather rotted.
Very nice Blue Limited. Nope, I don't remember seeing that one. There is a blue wagon down the road a bit from me, but not as nice looking as yours and he still is driving it.
Looks good and solid! Good pick!
IT RUNS!!!
My friends were agging me to start it, but I wanted to make sure everything was okay to do so... so I checked everything that I needed to, and it came down to "Why am I waiting, LET's GO start it!"
I took a half-quart of oil and dumped it into the oil fill for top-end lubrication. Then dumped some gasoline down the carb... pumped vigorously, and attempted to start, and whamo!! VROOM! It started instantly, like it was started 6 minutes ago, not 6 years ago!
Of course it was hard to keep running with the crappy (for lack of a better word) gasoline. I just ended up putting more gas in the tank and carb so it got a better mix, and it kept running then. Still have to look at other things, though. It's not running 100% as anyone would imagine, but HEY IT RUNS.
All of the country boys in my class with their BIG TRUCKS were talking trash about my Eagle the whole morning... until she fired up. They shut their mouths after that... ;D
Its aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!
congats on it starting dude and shutting up the non believers. hey i'm a country boy, i have friends who are country boys and they don't talk trash about my eagles any more after seeing what they can do. now if only my coworkers would stop telling me to sell them and get a "real car" as they put it.
Glad to hear you got it running! Its amazing how these engines will start right up after being neglected for so long. I hope you got a chance to change the oil before starting. I revived a Gremlin that had been sitting for 8 years, and when I changed out the old oil before trying to start it, there was a pint of water in the oil pan - must have been from condensation as it was very clean water, not anti-freeze. Congrats!
a fellow 83 limited wagon owner here. Gratz on getting it running, nothing feels better than the first time it runs and stays running under it's own power ;D
Thanks guys! I can't wait to get back into the shop and keep working on it, it's a lot of fun. I think next is to clean up the interior and exterior, and see if I can get rid of the mice smell :P

I didn't, but that's why I put in some fresh oil too. I just wanted to see if it would run, and any old oil will allow an engine to run for a bit. No long term, that's for sure...the oil is completely black lol

i did the same thing with my '85, Lewis. all the guys in my ag mech classes (i had two back to back first and second semester) wanted to know what the heck kinda car he was when i brought hm in. when i told them he could beat all their trucks (big ones too) they laughed and scoffed at him. so when i got him running again (new starter, starter solanoid and ignition control module) i took him out of the shop and around the parking lot a couple times. that weekend when i took him home, i went straight to a dirt road (newly wet mind you ;D) and got a video of me and my boyfriend (who Lewis really likes btw) doing donuts and fishtails. showed the naysayers the next monday, and they haven't said a single thing since 8)
YAY good for you! It's so nice to save Eagles. I just saved a Black 84 Limited ordered from the factory. Fun project...very little to do.
Got the car titled in my name today, so it's officially mine now. :) Also bought a gas syphoning kit, so I'm going to get that nasty gas out of there on Thursday (My next lab day in the school shop). I let you know how it goes!

I bet haha Sounds gross lol, I bet I'll be in for a LOVELY time when I have to clean my car up... I bought a face mask and heavy duty gloves... I'm prepared for anything!!! :o ;D
Eaglegirls SX had a terrible rodent problem (lucky they didn't go after the seats), but the snakes took care of the pests, I was left with the clean up of, well you know, lol. I had to gut the interior and scrub each individual piece to get the nasty out (Baking soda and water works good on the seat belts, let them soak in it) . Diluted purple power works very nice on the plastic pieces ;).
So there's your solution to the rodent problem.
First you catch a few snakes - - -

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely look into that! :)
Today, during my lab day in the shop I used my syphon pump and got all of the gas out of the tank... It was terrible...It was brown and full of little settlings. Then I put some fresh gas in there and replaced the fuel filter. She started right up and sounded a little better. Still gotta do a tune up and all that good stuff.
I also replaced the thermostat, as I want to make sure that would be in working order in case it was seized up from sitting. Except, now for some reason, there's a leak...(of course)... And tomorrow now I'll have to figure out where. I know the gasket is ok, i used gasket seal and all that good stuff. So i'm kinda stumped...But I'll look into it tomorrow.
The car is coming along though!
one thing that might rid of the smell is either bleach or amonnia.
Did you use a lot of gasket seal? That could be the problem. I hope you did not crack the t-stat housing. That is very, very easy to do.

I did... :( But thank god for my friend I bought the car from with all of his parts Eagles... A lifesaver. AND he told me how to put it in right. But hey, that's why I'm in a classroom and not in a mechanic's garage ;)
Got some things done, but need some help here..
Here's what I've done to the car so far: Replaced thermostat, coolant, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distribitor cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, and have taken out the crappy gas.
It still runs a bit rough...It's definitely better, but is still has that random violent shake every so often and that can be heard through the carb and the exhaust, like a misfire. Also it squeaks (I believe that to be the belts) and has a very loud "tick tick" noise. I still would like to get an oil change done, and I think that would help, but it should still run better...even with just what I've done so far...
Maybe I should try to check the timing? The carb looks pretty filthy on the outside, maybe the carb is gummed up? Should I replace/rebuild the carb? Maybe something else to look into? I need a bit of help here...that's why this site exists, right? A fellow Eagle member (me) needs some help and suggestions!
Have you traced out and connected/replaced that maze of vacuum hoses?

Have you traced out and connected/replaced that maze of vacuum hoses?
I have not, but I
do have a repair sheet from 2 years before the car was parked, a garage fixed a vacuum problem it had in 2002. I also have a vacuum sheet of all the hoses and where they're supposed to go too. I really don't know, it could be that... The engine was completely rebuilt in 2000 (4 years before it sat), and the guy paid
a lot of money to have it done. I guess it's a brand new long-block according to the papers that came with the car. And the engine looks pretty clean otherwise. Kinda stumped.
Mine did that until I tightened the exhaust and intake manifolds along with the carb bolts.
first of all check the engine compression if that is ok you can go ahead , if not you can´t go further then check about for vaccum leaks most of the problems about a faulty idle are because of that. timing must be set at 10 degrees bdtc, you must also check about fiing order which is 153624 and for i good shape spark plug wires and spark plugs as well, the little tick tick noise is because the hyd tappets are stuck because the dirty oil and they must be removed to be clean or replaced with new ones the engine comopresion for each cylender must be 100 lbs up. good luck

I know the firing order is right, I made sure of that. I will definitely see about the compression check. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it.
Today (Monday Oct. 7) was a lab day in the shop. I started taking off the wheels and started working on the brakes. Just basically did an inspection. I feel that I need to be able to stop safely before I start working on the engine. Because if I need to bring it down to my buddies shop (across town from my school)... I have to get there safely.
So today all new rotors, pads, drum brake covers, and drum brake inners were all ordered. So Monday I'll start officially on replacing the brakes :)
The tick-tick can also be a sloppy timing chain.
would a sloppy timing chain cause the oil light to come on when i put any strain on the engine when it's hot.
I doubt it. If the engine is "hot" then the oil is probably thin and the pump will not do a great job moving it around.
by hot i mean just under the green line.
the tick tick sound is because the oil pressure is too low, the oil pump must be replaced before something else get damaged, time to remove the oil pan ;)
I replaced my timing chain to steel. My tick tick went away. My oil pressure is around 40 to 50 PSI.
Sorry I'm late!
Nice find. Yeah, I've looked at a few eagles sitting around for years. and ya, they will still start up. It's amazing really.
Update 10/22/10.
Brought the car home from my school yesterday. Does not run very well at all... Sputters and refuses to stay running at times. Also gave it a wash, I was getting sick of the dirt and gunk everywhere! lol
I will post updated pictures soon. :)
Was it messed with while it was at school?
Quote from: IowaEagle on October 23, 2010, 11:20:55 AM
Was it messed with while it was at school?
I don't believe so, but it just seemed to do that only after I changed the oil ??? ???
Yesterday, I replaced the carb from my dad's old Eagle that we had to park last year due to it being rusty :( But anyways, the carb was almost a fresh overhaul and the old carb on my car looked real bad. When taking off all of the hoses and stuff, I noticed a lot of hoses that didn't go anywhere and some that were really broken up and dry rotted. I ended up replacing a lot of hoses and putting in a lot of new ones. (Thank god for my white Eagle as a guide...)
So I started it up last night after the carb was put on and the hoses replaced, and it ran better...MUCH better. It still has the hiccups every now and then but stays running. But the choke isnt working right, as it stays in fast idle all of the time. But that will be dealt with soon.
It appears you are zeroing in on the issues.
hope ya get it to driving status and can take it to the meet in 011 ...... make this the year of the 83 wagon ;D
Found the reason for the fast idle being stuck on, the wire for the choke was never put on after we changed the carb ::) ;D Well after we put that on, I thought the timing should be addressed. And sure enough, the timing was about 7 degrees off and messing up the vacuum advance.
Now she purrs like a kitten! But there still is a bunch to do yet... all of the belts are junk, some hoses are still junk, the gas guage doesn't work, and the steering is absolutely terrible (hard to control on the road, lots of play). But its coming along :)
Now it's time to give the car a REAL good clean up (inside and out) that it most desperately needs! ;D I mean, the interior has mold growing on the seats and door panels! Gross. :P

Been real busy lately and havent had much time to sit down and write about it. I'll post some pictures of it real soon here of how it turned out.
Well, good for you. Have a Good Egg.
Great to know and find out neighbor from the next state over. :)
Just read the post. Glad you were able to rescue an Eagle. Sounds like you had quite a time getting it to run properly. Gald it is going so good for you that you are able to use it as a daily dirver.

Hey thanks for asking! I actually have the missing piece of trim from my dad's old woody wagon. A lot of parts already have come from his car, so it's good to have a parts car...and a woody one at that!
But there shall be many more things done to "Woody" in the near future, I have a lot of plans in store.
Such as: Dual exhaust with dual headers, 4 bbl intake and carb, and an HEI upgrade...just to name a few powertrain upgrades. A lot more updates coming soon!
Well...here's a step in the wrong direction...
I was on my way home with my friend, I was leading and driving my Woody wagon and he was following me. The route I usually take was backed up with traffic, so I decided to take an alternate route...BAD IDEA...The roads were extremely icy, like black ice. Coming up to a stop sign, I noticed how bad the ice was. I flashed my brakes to my friend following me about 100 yards up to the stop sign. Then>>>the unthinkable happened...
Going about 6 mph, I started sliding...I tried to pump my brakes and it wasn't working. I was looking to my left, and I noticed cars coming (probably going 25 mph) I had so little time to think, I just continued pumping my brakes...Then I hit a dry patch and instantly stopped. I thought, "Whew, I'm safe..I'm okay.." Then I looked in my review mirror, and there's my friend... sliding... CRASH... He was only going 5-6 mph, but sliding on ice makes you speed up, so he probably hit me going 10-13 mph. BUT it could have been much worse, I could've slid through the intersection and got nailed in the door or my friend could have if I would've been able to get out of his way... The thing is>>Nobody's hurt, and my car is just bent up a bit...which my friend isn't so lucky...
He hit me in the left rear, where it was already damaged before I even got the car. The bumper was already pushed under a little bit and endcap messed up. Now, the bumper is pushed under just a bit more and the endcap is bulged out a bit. My friend's car is pretty bad... Let me tell you, EAGLES ARE TANKS... My car looks like it has a nick compared to my friend's car which looks like Godzilla stepped on it. He drives a Saturn, all plastic. I feel so bad for him... his bumper is all cracked, he lost his grille, his headlights are messed up, and his hood won't shut as the metal bar that holds it shut is bent and trashed.
I've only had this car about 2 months, and it's only been on the road for about 3 weeks...and I've already had two incidents with it. I guess when things go bad, they REALLY go bad...when am I going to have some luck???
That sucks. Hopefully it is repairable. Sounds like it could have been a lot worse than it was. Glad you adn your buddy are alright.
Folks are safe that is the main thing. Body damage can be fixed, even on Saturn's,
I've got to agree with IE, folks are safe is the main thing and body damage can be fixed. As amc78concord stated these Eagles are tanks compared to modern cars. Saturn's can take some abuse but not a lot. My son hit a deer with his Saturn SL. He was very lucky. It was low to the ground, front end was sloped so when he hit the deer he knocked it's legs from under it and flipped it over his roof. Only damage to the Saturn was a slight bump in the left front hood and a scratch along the roof. Scared the crap out of him though. Now he is more cautious driving at night around the roads in Maine.
Flying deer are scary.
In Florida we have hog fencing on all the highways because we have so many, You guessed it, HOGS! Why can't Pa and others do the same for deer. Can you imagine the pain these deer suffer let alone humans being killed or injured.

I don't know how sprightly the deer are in Pa, but in Oregon there would be now way to stop them unless you have a ten to twelve foot high fence. My friend has a big garden in his backyard with a eight foot fence and he still gets deer eating his vegetables.
One night when I was over at his house, we took spotlights and chased deer out of his garden. I was amazed to see a deer that was only about three feet tall at the front hip (that's really small for Oregon deer), jump over the top of a eight foot tall cyclone fence in the dark with a spotlight shining in it's eyes!
That type of fence would be quite expensive to install and maintain over the 36,000 miles of paved roads in Oregon.
Agreed, it would have to be a lot of mighty tall fencing to keep our corn fed deer in check.
Florida is no small state but hogs don't jump very high. I did not know deer jump that high. I have seen Armadillo jump over 2 feet when My beloved shepard would chase them. One jumped right into her mouth once. Snap, crackle, pop goes the armadillo. That dog had strong jaws may she rest in peace.
Last Thursday, Friday, and Today (Monday) were all lab days in my school auto shop. Got a lot of things done on Woody... I replaced the busted up exhaust and in put all new pipe (removed the cat ((it was junk anyways))) and installed a glasspack. ;D I'll make due with a glasspack until I save up enough for some flowmasters and dual exhaust... ;)
I also replaced the front bumper, as I didn't care for it because it didn't have bumper guards...which for me is just odd to see an Eagle without. So I put on my dad's old bumper from his woody wagon.
I also started on fixing the body damage in the back. As of right now, I'm waiting for my friend to fix the mounting holes on the replacement bumper (salt kills... :P )...but I decided to get a head start and remove the bent up bumper and try to get a peek at how bad the bumper ram is. I didn't take a picture of how bad the bumper and bumper ram got, but let me tell you, it was pretty bent up...that just sums it up right there. :P So my friend and I were able to bend out the bumper ram a little, the best we could. We're going to see if we can make it work by putting washers on the bolts to help space the gap. (My dad did this when my mom and I got rear-ended in her '87 Eagle 8 years ago)
I need a left ENDCAP!!! I have a red and brown one readily available, but I'd really like to get the right color (Blue)...I just don't wanna mess around with trying to paint it. But there is no way I'll be driving around with the endcap I currently have on there, so I took it off...Much better than a busted up lookin thing :P ...So if you have one let me know!!!! (this is posted in the wanted section as well).
Also, I bought new rims and tires for my Eagle ;D I've seen some pictures of Eagles with Jeep rims and thought "that's awesome..." I like the look of 83Eagle!'s Jeep rims on his Eagle, and decided that was for me. I also bought new White-Letter tires P215/65/R15, so they'll be wider and should look sweet...and shouldn't rub because they're not as high. Those should go on Woody this coming Thursday!
But anyways, here's some pictures for this update:

Those are special bolts, so could I get them from any ol hardware store? And you drilled your hub? Do they really rub that much?
Sorry about all of the questions, but I wanna make these work!
Update 2/17/11.
Car has been used as my winter driver, and is holding up real well. I did manage to install the Jeep rims along with new tires as well (P215/65/R15). So they're a little wider than normal and make the car look a whole lot better.
Unfortunately, I do not get very good gas mileage. I've done several tests, and each time it averages right around 11-12 mpg. I know that I don't baby an engine (I'm a teenager, as some would say it is the reason for the bad mpg)...but then why would my Concord average around 16 mpg with the same driving habits?
As of right now, the car is at my buddie's shop getting a new valve cover put on, as the old plastic one was terribly warped and leaked oil everywhere.
I've also repaired all of the body damage from the previous owner and the incident with my friend, and it turned out real good. I've also added a pair of driving lights and an aftermarket tachometer and a few other extra goodies. It has come a long way since September when I bought it, I'll take some pictures of it tomorrow for you guys to see how it looks today.
Here are some pictures that I promised you guys. Enjoy.

hey how did you get that dent in the passenger side front fender.

What I did it take a garden hose, take off your two heater core hoses, flush it with a little pressure on both holes. Then, you will see a bunch of dirty water flush out. Replace your heater core valve for they do go bad. They are available at Auto Zone for $50.00. I thought I had to replace my heater core and NOPE! Good as brand new and it blows HOT HOT HOT!!!! Jayson
I believe his was actually leaking coolant into the interior.
The wood grain must have been replaced. I can't imagine original wood grain looking that good.

My friend who owned it before me dropped something on it when it was sitting. He used it to keep his stuff on/in, like a storage bin. It sucks, but I can live with it

I believe so as well. I notice that on the driver's side, the woody woodgrain trim has been taken off (it's bent and damaged in some places) So maybe it was? I don't think it's a newer paint job though, as my hood has seen better days. I do know that it was in an accident, so maybe the whole driver's side was repainted only?
I'll be honest, I never really cared for the woody wagons. But I really like the look of yours. Maybe it's because I'm not used to seeing the wood being in such great shape. Yours looks brand new.

Thanks :) My dad used to own an '84 Woody Wagon, but it was brown instead of blue. It looked pretty cool, except over time after sitting outside it all started to flake off and then it didn't look so good anymore...lol ::) But I can see what you're saying

Are those things on your fenders those anti-deer whistles? They gave me a great idea. I think it would be really cool to install hood mounted turn signal indicators like those on my 64 TBird. You can see them in this picture, which I grabbed off the internet - this isn't my car. Mine is black and not available for photos right now.

They are anti-deer whistles lol.
That is a good idea...let us know if you do put those on, that would pretty sweet to see
I found these on amazon, and they might be a real nice addition to my car, given the color and the black accents I have going.

Nice, I think it would go good with your black detailing! ...IF you have the heart to drill into your fender... :o
My friend't truck has those hood mounted turn signals. They just stick to the fender and have really thin wires run through to the engine compartment between the hood and fenders.

Yes, that's the scary part! Now would be a good time to do it though while its still in the body shop. I should order them and set them on the fender just to see what they look like. Of course I'd have to wrestle with that plastic inner fender to make it work, which is never easy lol
I decided to order a pair of these and see what they look like. They require no hole for mounting, although maybe a small one for the wires. I'll lay them on the fenders and see what I think before I do any drilling though!

If the wires are small enough, you should just be able to close the hood on them, and have the wires run into the engine compartment.

Thanks, I'll have to see if that will work. I really don't want any wires visible, but if I can attach them right next to the hood maybe I can hide the wires that way. We'll just have to see how that looks.
