well guys i got me another eagle you don't want to know how hard it was for me to keep this quite from you. now without further adieu meet survivor.

by the way that is ten years of dust on her and no she don't run. but she is a 1983 limited wagon with leather interior.
Barn find! Looks like it was protected from weather with all that dust accumulated on it. It might shine up nice after a good pressure washin.
Congrats! I bet it will look great once you rinse the dust off. I see it has CO plates - where was this beauty hiding?
Looks good!
I envision another Eagle on the road.
AWESOME FIND!!!! I'm gonna send ya an egg for it. I'm interested in seeing the interior
thanks guys i actually got her from a customer at work who also has a kammback which he wouldn't sell me and it wasn't a barn it was a garage. she does have some body rust on the drivers front door and the rear hatch just above the fill cap. she needs a door handle and a drivers side taillight thankfully there's a good supply here in pueblo. unfortunately i don't have the keys for her as of yet as he accidentally grabbed the wrong ones. i'll see about some interior pics once i get her cleand out.
make sure to take a before picture of the interior
There is something so simply delightful about finding something thats been sitting in the dark, forgotton for so long, and pulling it out once again into the light to once again serve its purpose.
I bet that car will be quite happy to be on the road again, some day soon :)

Take before and after pictures in general - there may be an EOM theme about that some day.
i actually planned on filming eagle eyes pulling survivor out of her hiddy hole but by the time we got to the momentous occasion it was to dark for for my camera pick up anything. and don't worry i'll take some more before pics once i get the keys for her, thankfully the doors are unlocked.
here are some before pics of the interior, after pics coming sometime later in the future.

At first glance it looked to me like a shadow of the inside mirror...so I looked a second time and I believe you're right :o
yes it is a third brake light you see, and it's stock.
Shouldn't be stock to an Eagle. If it is AMC logo'd then it would be from a Renault from that era.
well i was goofing around today with eagle eyes key in survivor's ignition and it turned, i found out the stock radio, the fan, the digital clock, and the starter all work correctly. the engine turned over smoothly but with no fuel wouldn't start, no surprise there. i'll be going to get some gas tomorrow and see if she'll start, so please everyone pray to the AMC gods that she does.
They have been known to start after years of disuse and neglect.
well after about ten minutes of trying and about a minute to put the spark plug wires on after remembering i hadn't put them on yet, she fired right up.

Gratz!!! it's funny how we sometimes overlook the simplest of fixes then go duh to ourselves
We have all been there and will go there again.
Out of it all, I noticed the small cube electric heater on the floor behind the seat.......LOL< we should do a "where's Waldo" thing as trivia.

yeah i did that with eagle eyes before when i unplugged it to put the new torqe converter in.
And leaving the rotor out of the distributor...guilty as charged!
as soon as i get the u-joint for the rear axle replaced, both radiator hoses on, coolant in the radiator, both rear valve stems replaced, and get her tagged and insured i will be taking her for her first test run in ten years.
well i have finally gotten survivor off the trailer now that my yard is dry and found a few minor problems. first was a bent rim got that fixed. second was that the kickdown rod was disconnected got that put back on. and last and worst of all a bad exaust leak coming from the top of the manifold where it connects to the block still gotta fix that.

Man I wish I was close enough to come downthere and check that thing out. Identical to my car, but with all the goodies, except for the slushbox. They even did the same ratty "speaker mod"...... Very very nice find.... I wish I could nab that driver side fender lol XD
Cool, I would love to have an Eagle limited (who wouldn't). The leather Eagle seats look so comfortable. Has it been repainted at some point? I thought white was only offered on the "1988" models...
nope everything on her is original, although i do plan on repainting her with the same colors even though i don't care for white or brown.[color]
here is a very short video of the first time she was started in ten years.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TrXmhPvyPw
well i took survivor out for her first test run today and she got very hot very quikly. she ran good until she got really hot. needs new thermastat, tranny fiter and fluid, and anouther oil change thanks to 10 year old pensoil. smokes like crazy though due to the fact that i couldn't get all of the 10 year old gas out of her.
How long did it take for it to get hot?
i supossed that the thermostast remains closed or maybe a faulty head gasket, why don´t you check about the radiator level to see if the water level decreases, sometimes a poor oil pressure can cause this issues either
from my experiences if you have a faulty head gasket look for 2 things water in the oil, and/or bubbles in the radiator
it took about seven minutes to go from cold to the red zone. checked the oil it's dark but no water it so good there and the only reason it's as dark as it is is because it had pensoil in it for 10 years.
right that´s the best way to get sure. oil mixed with water or bubbles in the rad while running
I'd change that oil and probly pull the thermostat out and take it for another drive...... if it heats up again then you have blockage
i do plan on changing the oil and if there is a blockage well i'll just flush the system and force it out.

I'd sea foam it as well, Pennzoil is horrible IMO. i have seen numerous cars that where Pennzoil lifers that had a wax-like buildup around the oil fill (I'd hate to see what the internals look like). Probably wouldn't hurt to pickup an extra quart to flush while your draining
yeah i agree pensoil is the worst oil you can possibly use in a car or any engien for that matter and i am going to use sea foam before i do the oil change. i'm using quakerstate in it right now but i plan on changing oils as it is made by the same company as pensoil. just trying to figure out which oil to use now.
I've used Castrol for every vehicle I've ever owned...no complaints here, my eagle has had it since its first oil change in 1985.

i have been using quakerstate in just about everything i have ever owned and i have never seen the waxy build like pennzoil. i never knew they where made by the same company
yeah i didn't know until a month ago. i was board out of my mind at the parts store when i desided to see what companies owned which brands of oil and thats when i found out they were made by the same company.
i started to use liqui moly on my two amc´s which is a german synthetic oil and it seems to work fine it is a bit expensive but i think they worth it
Nice save man. Our cars are like brothers lol...Both being Limited models but just different colors. Wow...your car sat for 10 years and fired up...I wonder if mine will too? Mines only been sitting for 6 years tho...what you think?
The mechanic who helped me install a new flex plate in my 86 swore it would never run again... and upon research in it and checking time frames, I KNOW mine sat for ATLEAST 5-6 years...
Its still amazing that mechanic, because he still cant believe it runs like it does ;D I love these cars!

I like Valvoline VR1 10w30, not as easy to find as 20w50, but it's out there, I found some at Napa, lol. Not to mention it hasn't been stripped of its ingredients, because it's aimed at race/performance engines ;).
I purchased my Black Limited 84 Wagon with 241,600 miles. No overhaul. Everything documented. I do not know what oil the previous owner used, but I put 10W30 AMSOIL PLUS a quart of Lucas Oil in the change and I have 40 to 45 PSI. I'm surprised!! LOT of guys out there say, Chrysler f*(ked up the AMC 258. Not the same. I LOVE my Eagles. ALL oil is synthetic either Mobil or AMSOIL. My 87 & my newest winter 84.
Ive had fairly good luck with that royal purple oil $10 a quart, only car it failed me with was my 2001 caddy but northstar engines are built to blow up, used it in my 2002 jeep also and it has 250,000kms on it and still runs good after rolling over!
well while looking at the rear hatch yesterday to try and figure out why it wobbled when i lifted it and found out that someone had tried lifting the hatch more than the hinges would allow and consequently bent in the metal under the hinges. does anyone know if it is repairable or should i just get a new hatch.
There are plenty of hatches out there. I'd personally go for a new hatch. rather than have one that is bent or twisted in a fashion where it won't seal properly or close the way it should.
well i got to thinking (never a good thing) today about what colors to paint survivor. and now not sure if i want to keep her the original colors or not. the new colors i have been thinking about doing are as follow; AMC blue on dark blue, AMC blue on black, or maple red on dark blue. decisions decisions.
Match the colors somewhat to the interior. So if you have nutmeg interior, dark brown trim or main coat, etc, looks good that way. Most vehicles are painted to match their interiors in some ways, and teh ones that don't tend to look a bit tacky.
i have the same leather seats that you swaped into yours but they need redone. and the rest of the interior is tan.
my 2 cents are get it repainted the same color, that way you don't have to mess with the engine compartment or inside the doors
well the thing is when i do repaint her i plan on striping her to down to the bare body so the engine compartment and door jams wont be an issue of coarse that won't be for sometime.
well guys survivor saw her first snow in ten years unfortunately the -20 degree weather kind of killed the battery so she wouldn't start. here are a couple of pics.

UPDATE
i found out yesterday that i will have to drop suvivors transmission before i can take her for anouther test run as it is puking fluid out of the bellhousing and on to the exaust. i'm thinking either the front seal (the one the tourq converter goes through) is shot and needs replaced or the tourq converter neck has a crack in it and needs replaced in which case the front seal will get replaced anyway. thoughts.
Probably both scenarios. If your lucky just the front seal. If your torque converter is original to the car you may want to plan on swapping it out too, even if the input shaft still looks OK.
I have a perfectly straight fender for you if you feel like hookin a buddy up with that driver side fender ;)... since you'll be repainting anyway... Mine doesn't match. It makes worlds of difference havign good headlights and not looking at dents though.
toug how many times do i have to tell you you aint getting my fender. ;D ;D if you want i can get the one off the car in the yard that matches for you. you just have to wait till i get eagle eyes or survivor road worthy enough to make the trip. iowa i did think about getting a new tourq converter for her anyway but the biggest problem is $$$$$$$. quick question what color are the original tourq converters?
I have seen turquoise 3 times
well that's the color of the one i pulled out of eagle eyes the first time i pulled her transmission (torque converter bolts decided to say goodbye and left the car on their own).
Yup, they be a blue kind of color.
I have one that is turqoise and one that is gray , both are the lock-up type. Check out TorqueConverter1 dot com.
i went to the parts store to get a torque converter for survivor and every one they had listed for her had gear around the outside for the starter. now i have two questions. the first being does an 83 use the locking or nonlocking torque converter. and the second is what is the correct part number for the correct torque converter.
Here is an easy way to tell what type of converter you have, as long as it is original. The front input shaft will be blank on some (lockup) type, and the ones with spline all the way to the end are unlock up, so I,vie been told.
You may have to determine if the trans was ever changed before. I have seen non-lockup's wind up where they weren't supposed to be. Look in the Eaglepedia for the OEM part number. Good luck
I found a post on here that showed a picture of the difference between the input shafts. I think you can do a web search also and find the info. I just went through this with my 82 Eagle. It had a lockup trans in it, I got a used one it was a non-lockup from an 88 , but mistankingly came with a lock up converter. Check above in my reply,I have since gotten mine from - tourqueconverter1 - dot - com . It shipped here in 2 - 3 days USPS from Cali. - to NY converter and shipping under $120 ---- thay are a mass rebuilder supplier, I am happy with it so far, no issues, comes with a warrenty, and longer warrenty for more $$$ of course. They get away with cheap shipping useing those one rate priority boxes from the post office.
Another tip - bieng it is a new converter - I cut out a round piece of cardboard a little bigger than the converter base held it up to the flex plate, punched holes through it where the bolts go , marked the bottom hole, ( or which ever one you want to ), marked that hole and the one on the flex plate it matches, then when I got the converter, I matched the cardboard to it's holes and marked the one that matches the one on the flew plate. It saved alot of hassle trying to match them up once it is in..........jusy IMO.
well the transmission is the original one so whatever type came in the car in 83 is the type i have.
I believe then that would be the lockup type, as my 84 wagon is original and had that type in it. I think IE had the breakdown dates on when they went to non lockups.
'83 would be a lock up -- if original to the car. The '84 - '88 parts catalog in the Eaglepedia will provide the date details.
thanks guys that helps a lot.
HI I had the same problem the torque converter cracked and eat up the seal .Had yo replaced both of them .good luck ........Don
Its wierd man...Me you and Tougeagle are geographicaly pretty close and somehow we all ended up with nearly identical 1983 eagles. Once I get ginger on the road it would be awsome if all three of us roll up to the Rambler Ranch in matching Eagles.
I just got my torque converter off and Im curious now as to what kind it is...Im guessing it would be the same as yours id post some pics but i just broke my :censored: memory card on my camera. this is the only one I have on my computer...really cant tell much from it...(http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc377/shanebo79/005-3.jpg)
is that your flywheel under the torque converter or does it have the gear welded to it? oh and how long did it take you to pull you transmission. i just pulled survivors today and had it out in about five and a half hours and that includes jacking her up and putting jackstands under her and removing everything to get the transmission out.

Flexplate goes between t/c and block, and has the starter ring gear on it. It's best to install the new t/c on the transmission, then bolt the t/c to the flexplate after the engine and trans have been mated. You bolt the t/c back up through the starter hole and by hand turning the engine. Otherwise, you risk cracking the t/c shaft.
i was just curious as to weather or not that the torque converter was sitting on top of the flexplate or not. sorry for the confusion toug i knew all that stuff about the torque converter as i had to go thru all that with eagle eyes.

No worries man. And, I like shanebo's idea. We DO need to get a Rambler Ranch trip set up for this summer, and get a group going. I had no idea until early this year that place is located here in the state. Caroline needs to socialize, she's all lonely up here...
that would be cool to do i just need to get survivor fixed up before i try anything like that though (i need to do that with eagle eyes to). oh and eagle eyes and survivor need to socialize to as the only eagles they get to hang out with are each other.
My torque converter was bolted right to the fly wheel. 5 bolts I believe... There was nothing between the t/converter and the flywheel either, it was bolted directly against it.
Between the transfercase pull and and disconnecting the exhaust and dropping the fluid lines and all that jazz Id say it probably took about 6 to 8 hours from the time I jacked the car up and the time the tranny left the car.
So was that how your t/converter was hooked up or was yours different...Im really curious.
they were bolted up the same way as yours on both of my eagles. oh and it's four bolts not five unless someone changed the flexplate and torque converter on ginger but i have never seen one that had five before.
I was thinking of the fly wheel bolts...It was only 4 on the torque converter...just went out and looked.
good because you had me very confused.
here is survivor's torque converter it looks like someone has replaced it before.

what do you guys think? oh and is that the part number in the bottom pic?
It looks like junkyard crayon to me : ) ?? I can allmost see the input shaft on your tranny in the background.
Ya know..mine doesnt have one identifying mark anywhere on it like yours does. It does however look exactly like yours. That writing almost looks it may have been a salvage/used part maybe....Everytime Ive bought used parts that were pre-pulled and inventoried had writing on them like that...just a guess though

Looks exactly like a junkyard part to me, and most likely, it is, though they sell new tc's for Eagles for about the same price that some yards would charge.
the junk yard thing is what i was thinking but i wanted to see what you guys thought. oh and i can say with all certainty that the trans has been pulled before as someone butchered one of the transmission lines and put a piece of rubber line in the section they removed.
HI I toke my tc in to a Taney shop and they sent my tc out for a rebuild for $95.00 .it was gone for 4 days ..my 82 has hi pressure rubber hose on both sides to the trans cooler no leaks no problems...the neck was cracked and they replaced it .....on my tc there was no color just bare metale ..........Don
You can compare it to the numbers in our parts catalog in the Eaglepedia. Probably, as mentioned, its a wrecking yard inventory number. AMC stamped their numbers on most parts.

eagle eyes also has rubber lines for her transmission.
Mine still has the metal ones. They are caked in oil and grime...along with everything else...so i dont know if they are good or bad yet. My radiator looked pretty tore up too, and where the tranny lines go into it it was pretty wet like its been leaking. I got alot of work ahead of me.
i have another transmission question for you guys is it normal for a 83 to have a 27 spline input shaft.
Thats what mine has...just went and checked ;D
By the way I think mine is a junk yard tranny too...inside the bell housing there is big "3" written in yellow crayon.
thanks shanebo for the quick reply. now that's what i call an eggcellent response time. yeah i'm thinking the same for survivor as well because the same numbers that are on the torque converter are also on the top of the transmission under a fair amount of grease and grime which made it hard for my to see in the diminishing light that i took the pics in yesterday.
No problem man!!
Hey Maddog, how did your tranny fluid look...Mine looked like the drain oil out of a diesel, It was thick and black with clumps of stuff in it...Plus it smelled really burnt...I dont hold out much hope for my tranny...Im pretty sure its as good as toast.
well considering it was in there for ten years it wasn't to good. it was dark smelled a little on the burnt side but there were no clumps in it and the magnet that was in the pan didn't have any big pieces of metal on it just the typical shavings from use.

Rebuild kits are less than 100 dollars, and from what I've been reading they're supposed to be pretty easy to rebuild on your own... would give you some good experience and be far cheaper than a shop...
also, the tranny lines just need new o-rings, you don't have to replace the radiator or the lines if they leak at the connections, just pop the hoses out, slide new o-rings on and pop them back in....
hey does anyone know where to get the seal for the transmission dipstick?
I just used an O ring I got at a local hardware store , worked just fine. The speedometer one I haven't found yet.
HI Do you have a ..............Don
went to the local true value today and got an o-ring for 27 cents that fits nice and snug. 68AMXGOPAC they also had some o-rings that looked to be the right size for the speedo cable.
Thanks Maddog - funny, that's where I got mine at - True Value. They have tons of those little drawers of stuff,Tractor Supply has a decent assortment of odd things to that have worked for me on some projects.I didn't get the speedo one mainly because the new transfer case had the old cable cut off and the gear part siliconed in and it wasn't leaking, but I need to get it fixed soon as I hate "estimateing" speed when there's no trafic to base it on.
no problem dude. i just found out i may need to rebuild survivor's transmission. it will cost me $700 and that includes the torque converter in the price.
Where you gonna take the tranny to maddog? Gingers tranny is gonna need a rebuild too :banghead: I guess i better start saving up some money...I should probably have the transfer case checked out too...its makes some ugly sounds when i turn it while ingaged..sounds like a pencil sharpener...the fluid in it looked like tar as well.
a place here in pueblo called better rate. the guy that owns the place has been rebuilding transmissions for thirty years.
It might be worth the trip to take it down there....I dont really know of any good transmission guys around here.
do ya think they do transfer cases too?
There are a few writeups on teh forum about rebuilding that tranny... you can do it yourself for around 100 bucks and save a ton of money. From what I've read, they're supposed to be pretty easy...
i would attempt it myself but i don't have a garage or anywhere else i can do it, so i'm just going to have them do it. as for transfer cases i can ask them for you shanebo.
Much appreciated man!! I know very little about the internal workings of an automatic tranny. Id better leave it to the pros if i want this thing to move when Im done ;D
By the way, how does Survivors motor look? Gingers is filthy inside and out. Im gonna have to tear in down to the block to get all the sledge out of it.... :censored: :banghead:
not bad actually. i plan on getting a pic of the engine bay after i get her back together. one thing to try before you attempt to completely tear the engine apart is seafoam that stuff works really well. oh and when you come down i'll bring you to see her in person if you want.
well i called Better Rate today shanebo and he said if you bring just the transfer case out of the car it will be $600 for the rebuild $700 if it's still in the car.
Shane, use BG MOA, really good stuff for the oil. So powerful though that you have to change your oil after letting it sit and idle, it can't be in the engine for too long. you can also use a mixture of atf and diesel (small amount) mixed in with the oil... Just be careful either way, you don't want to free up a ton of stuff at once and have it clog oil galleries.
Sweet...Ill have to start $aving!!! I wonder how hard..and expensive...It would be to drop a later model jeep tranny with O/D it one of these things?
i'm not sure on how much it would cost but i believe some of our members have done it before. hopefully one of them will chime in and shed some light on the how to and how much it will cost.
If you use the AW4 you will want need some of the Jeep electronics so it will shift automatically.
thank you Iowa i figured you or one of our more knowledgeable members would know.
I wonder if it would bolt up without an adapter and some tranny mount mods...an overdrive would sure be nice on the freeway!! Theses things tend to get prettty wound up after 75.
it probably will need an adapter unfortunately.
Have you gotten the chance to do anything with your tranny yet Maddog?
no not yet as i have had a bit of a set back because i accidentally broke my cell phone and had to get a new one since i didn't have insurance on it (i do now).
I dropped mine in a pan full of anifreeze the other day while pulling the heads...I still dont know how it didnt destroy it...this cheap little phone of mine has the spirit of an Eagle for sure!!
yeah well i'm a little more than hundred shy right now but as they say " :censored: happens". mabey next month i'll have the money.
I hear ya man...If I save up 10 bucks i have to shell out 20 for something!
yeah whats worse i had just got paid and the entire check went towards my phone bill because one of the other people on the plan didn't pay their part of the bill (they don't have a phone now >:D >:D)
well i finally managed to scrape together the $700 i need to rebuild the transmission so i will be taking it to the transmission shop tomarrow.
Right on man!!! Gingers tranny is still sitting on top of an oil drum under a tarp....I will be sending the engine block off to get hot tanked soon though.
Cant wait to see how that tranny comes out...Ill hopefully have some funds saved up soon to get mine down there.
yeah i'm hoping it don't take to long for them to get it done. and i'm going to have get a new shifter to since the cable in survivor's snapped on me so i'm going to be going to the junk yard in the next couple of weeks to get a new one.
Let me know when ya decide to go, maybe we can meet up, Id like to grab a fender and some other odds and ends.

If you're looking to get a new front fender for yours, I'll take that other one off your hands if it doesn't have any cancer. Since the holes are hidden behind trim it would be a cool experience for mem to learn how to cover those holes, sand them over and paint that part of it...
if I find another its all yours man...Its very repairable...I just dont want mess with it.
shanebo i'll let you know when i plan on going. i just have to wait till after payday (the fifth) to see how much i have left over that i can spend at the yard. but i'm thinking maybe sometime around the twelfth, but like i said i'll have to see.
My schedule and funds are a bit in the air too.
just out of curiosity shanebo what are your usual days off.
well i got a call from the transmission shop today and they said my transmission is done and ready to be picked up. :hello2: :hello2: ;D
Usually I have saturdays and either friday or wednesday off at the store. I also work at the funeral home part time as an apprentice...My hours/days there are slightly less predictable but as a rule saturday and wednesday works best for me...how about you maddog?
Is there much more stuff you need to do to survivor to get her road worthy after the trannys back in?...Let me know how that tranny goes back in.
I spent all the money i had saved for my tranny getting the engine worked over at the machine shop...Its a 400 dollar set back but it needed to be done.
my days off are completely random unless i ask for them off. as for what still needs done is not much from what i can see. but we'll see.
well i picked up my transmission from the shop today and with tax the total came to $729.60. and just for the heck of it i took a couple of pics so enjoy.

Looks good!! The T/C looks right out of the box!!! is that brand new?
Let me know how hard it is to get back in...Im kinda worried about it...Cuz It wasnt exactly easy to get out , especially with only a lousy floor jack at my disposal ;D
i believe the converter is a rebuilt as he pulled it from a box for a shop and it had some fluid already in it but i could be wrong. as for putting the transmission back in this will make the fourth time i've done it with an eagle so it won't be to hard to do as long as i don't knock it off the floor jack again. :banghead: it is a pain in the :censored: to get it back on the jack when it does.
HI A new converter has fluid in it from the factore .all are tested ......Don
I mage a ramp up of plywood and various pieces of wood so as to just slide it up to the back side of the motor and lift it by the tailsshaft and pust it forward.Amazingly it worked quite well and easy : ) . did it mostly by myself and the car was up on 4x4's under the tires......good luck !!!
thats a good idea with the wood ramp. It sure beats trying to balance it on a floor jack!! I may have to dig through the scrap wood pile tomorrow ;D
well i got the transmission and transfer case in today. now all i have to do is put in the drive shafts and fill her up with transmission fluid in her and fire her up. un fortunatlly i won't be able to drive her till i get a shifter but i'll be going to the junk yard this wednesday to get one and a few other parts.
If Im lucky Ill have next wednesday off too...Id like to get my hands on one of those spirit grills and maybe a 4.0 head if I got funds...Ill let ya know..hopefully they will have the schedule posted by tomorrow.
thats gonna be sweet to have survivor back on the road!!
yes it will be because then ican pull eagle eyes off the road to do some much needed work done on her.
hey shanebo if you have wednesday or thursday off either day day will work as i decided to ask for both off so i can go to the yard and get parts and work on my eagles. so let me know which day works for you and we can decide where to meet up at and at what time.
Hey whats up man...Looks like I wont be able to make it down this week...my wife was kind enough to make plans for me/us to go up to denver with her friends on thursday....Nice of her to ask me....she knows what im doing before I do >:( ....One of these days we'll get to the junk yard and do some parts hunting.
Sorry about that man...I was looking foward to pulling parts too.
If you go to the 29th street yard ya mind checking if that spirit grill is still there.
thanx
no problem dude we can try again at a later date. and yes i will see if they have a good one for you, heck i'll even take a pic for you. oh and all i have to do now is put fluids in the transfercase and transmission and get that shifter and then i can take survivior out for a test run. yyyyyyyyaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Right on man!!! I certainly appreciate you checking for me.
Thats so cool that survivor is going to be hitting the road soon....One more bird brought back from the dead!!!
Eggs to you for a speedy recovery with survivor...and for finding all those parts eagles at the junkyard ;) ;D
thanks for the eggs dude and i'm always happy to help.
well i got some transmission fluid in survivor today before it started raining and fired her up now all i need to do is change her oil, top toff the transmission, and air up her one flat tire. oh and she now moves under her own power although i had to redneck the shifter as hers is broken but it works for the most part.
HI that good to hear she is moving on her on power .I wish I could say that about my 82.........
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FIRST RUN ............. Don
thanks don but her first run won't be until i get the new shifter.
Its getting close though!! Thats what counts!!
Ive been meaning to ask you Maddog...How did you find Survivor?
i got her from one of the regulars at my job. he had seen eagle eyes in the parking lot and asked if she was mine and i told him yes he then said that he has two of them one wagon and one kammback. and was thinking of selling one i told him i was interested in it and that if he was willing to sell the kammback i would by it as well but he didn't want to separate with the kammback but that was cool since i got a very nice eagle plus a spare motor, transmission, and transfer case for $500.
Thats a heck of a deal!!
Does he still have the Kammback?
yes Jim and the resone he wouldn't sell it is because he's fixing it up. he loves that thing.
well i'll be getting my "new" shifter in the morning as well as a few other things. >:D and i will try to remember the camera so i can get a pic of that spirit grill for shanebo.
shanebo i went out there today and they had one spirit that had a decent grill on it. here is a pic for you.

Sweeeett!! I am so getting that grill!!! Thanks Maddog!!! Is that the one down on 29th?
Oh yeah...did you happen to see that wagon down there that was the same color as ours?
yes as that is the car i got my shifter from i was able to look and the fender on the passenger side looked good. the drivers is a little crumpled though.
Ive gotta get down there soon!! I don't want anyone to beat me to it!!
By the way, are they kinda secretive at that junk yard??...Every time Ive gone there they only tell me about the 3 stripped ones in the back...Ive yet to pry the whereabouts of the good ones out of that hippie dude :hippy:...Ill have to go with you next time...I don't think that guy wants to give up his stash to me ;D...Ya still wanna meet up down there one of these days?....Ill be sure to let ya know at least a week in advance before I go down there.

first off no they just want to get rid of everything on those cars so they can get rid of them. secondly :rotfl: and yes i do still want to meet up with you and besides there are a few more things i need to get for both my cars.
Right on man....Do you get wednesday and thursday off often...I can usually land one of those days off with out to much static from my boss.
HI boys I am the new owner of a 1983 Eagle Silver bullet wagon .....with dark blue on the bottom :hello2:

every once in a while i do but usually only if i ask for them off i can try to get the 27th off if that works for you shanebo and congrats on the new eagle don.

HI pictures in Your Eagles Silver bullet Has her own post .....Don
Ive seen that...good find there Don...and congrats!!
hey shanebo i'm going to be asking for the 27th (next wednesday) off as there are a few interior piece for survivor and some body parts for eagle eyes that i need to get.
Im gonna put in for it tomorrow!! Ill let ya know what the boss says...Im keepin my fingers crossed shes in a good mood.
HI Ive gotten the pictures working now .... I hope you like ................Don
yeah lets hope we both get it this time.
HI M.D. are you driving survivor or Eagle eyes I lost track ...............Don
i'm still driving eagle eyes at least until i can get the little rubber gasket for the brake master cylinder for survivor, and get the exhaust fixed and new looks.
Are the parts for the master cylinder still readily available....Im pretty sure gingers going to need some attention in that area too.
i'm not entirely sure but i sure hope so because the piece i need is the rubber seal the vac line goes into.
HI My parts man sad he could get allmost every thing for the eagle ..not body parts ...He has not failed
me yet on rambler and A.M.C.parts ...good man goes out of hes way to get my parts ......Don

Brake booster grommet. Those are very easy to find, most part stores will have them. Master cylinders are also easy to find still.
Thats certainly good news there ;D
Yup, that grommet may even be hanging on a rack in the "customer" part of many parts stores.
well i finally got around to getting a key made for survivor's locks today and was quite surprised by what the key they gave me had on it.
(http://i24.servimg.com/u/f24/14/94/93/40/pict0232.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=178&u=14949340)
Is that a :amc: logo I see!!!??? Where did you get that?
yes it is and i got it from a locksmith shop about two or three blocks from where i live.
That is too cool dude....He must have had those for years!!
i wouldn't doubt it if he had.
well guys i was finally able to take survivor for a test run (about three or four miles) and although she didn't get overly hot she kept trying to die out and had no power at all and i can't for the life of me figure it out. does any one know what it might be before i decide to tear into this can of worms.
EDIT: well i think i may have a new problem as i believe the oil pomp is going out as there is a very noticeable knock coming from the rear of the engine which has lead me and my dad to think i may have a failing oil pump, thoughts?[color]
HI Maddog when you first started her you hag a sound track of it running and in the sound track I could hear
it knocking I though you could hear it so I did not want to be the bad guy and say its knocking .you know what I mean ....It mite not be the oil pump It could be the pick up screen mite be plugged..eather way the pan has to come down.....Or the bolts to the tourk converter to flywheel if they are lose it sounds like a rod.check that out and if I think of any more i will let you know ...I still don't want to be the bad guy.......layer ..Don
i have already decided to go ahead and remove the oil pan so if it is the pump i will go ahead and replace the screen as well.
HI What is your next step after you drop the pan ....would you let me know what you find .....Don
not sure as to what the next step is but whatever i find when i do i will let you know.
wrong oil viscosity can also lead to cold startup knocking... I noticed that when I went from 5w30 to 10w30. Going to 0-30 next time.
it doesn't do it when it's cold only once it warms up does it start knocking and i'm using 10w30 in her.
Im looking for an oil pump for Ginger too. The pump is still available but the pick up tube...not so much :(. I guess the tube can be removed from the old one and fitted on the new...but I have not yet gotten that far...Im terrified of tearing up the pick up tube!!
Ive only ever had one oil pump go out on me and it made kinda a thumping sound. If ya need an extra set of hands raising the motor or dropping the front axle to get the pan out let me know...I could request a day off. Now that Im back from Cali., this week is lowsy for me cuz im being punished at work for taking time off...but hopefully in the next few weeks Ill get my schedule back on track
thanks for offer shanebo and i will definitely consider it since i have never done this before and neither has my dad (on an eagle that is). as for the tube i have three stores here that said they could get it one even said they could get the pump with the tube already connected.
That tube was a big worry for me since its an Eagle specific part. I also found a rebuild kit for the existing pump...not much to it really. The oil pan is the reason I pulled the motor in the first place...It seemd easier than dropping the front axle.....Plus at that point...if there is any major internal engine work needed it can be done much easier I found alot of stuff once I tore into the motor a bit that would have proved to be trouble down the road....Let me Know man...Id love to give ya a hand...its a good learning experience for me too.
well it might be a while before i can get to it. but when i do finally get around to it i'll let you know dude.
sounds like a plan...I havent done :censored: with Ginger for weeks....not enough money or time.
my problem is time not money at the moment (been saving up to get the roll cage for my racecar) so i can get the pump and what not whenever i want.
I blew all my extra money on our vacation...It was great fun at the time....But now that its over, that several grand I spent on our trip would sure look alot better stuck into my Eagle or my bike. That would have just about got my drive train finished. Buisness at the funeral home has been kinda slow too...I know it sounds really screwed up but hey...Thats half my income right there!!
Do you race at that track on the north end of pueblo?
if you mean the old becon hill which is now i25 speedway i will be as soon as i finish my car.
Yup thats the one...I got a few buddies that race there..I love going down there
yeah i'm there almost every saturday watching the races.
well i got my oil pump and pickup tube and screen yesterday. oh and shanebo they are having figure 8 hornets this saturday at the old becon hill race track which i'm going go see.
right on man!! They had the pick up tube!!??
it took them a week to get it in but they got it for me.
where did you get that at maddog? Ive been looking for one!! By the way Ill know tomorrow if I got wed. off.
advaced auto on highway 50 here in pueblo.
thanx dude...I gonna have to check them out...I never even thought about advanced auto....not many around close to where i live...I always forget about them.
when you come down i'll show you the place i got it at.

Maddog let us know how the new oil pump and pickup tube work for you. When I replaced the engine in Pepe we bought a new pump and pickup and they didn't look anything like those that were on the original Eagle engine. Even though we ordered them for an Eagle, they looked more like the Jeep parts and we weren't sure they would even work with the Eagle oil pan. So we stuck the original Eagle oil pump and pickup. It would be great if these work for you because I've been concerned that pumps and pickups for Eagles weren't really available, even though they were advertised. Thanks and good luck!

i will be sure to let everyone here know how it works out once i get the time to get to it.
Well dude, looks like we can finally hit the junk yard wednesday. I got my fender and powerbuldge hood off the one up here but I need alot of little odds and ends...I might see about getting the OBD1 computer and harness I need for the conversion...Id better check with Tougeagle to see what kind of tools I need.
HI M.D. whats going on with survivor have time to put in any of the new parts yet...later ......Don
hey i seen a blurb about races... what kind of races? i love racing. i run a dirt oval up here from time to time.
no don i haven't yet as i only get one day a week off and have not had the time to do anything.
brentsydlik the track i'll be racing at is a paved :( quarter mile oval with a figure 8 >:D. i'm building my race car out of a 91 pontiac 2 door sunbird with a 2.0 ohc four cylinder with a five speed for the hornet class.
I feel ya dude, I havent had time to do anything with ginger either. This whole working for a living thing really sucks! I need to win the lotto or somthing!
i've been thinking of asking for a week off but i'm pretty sure i wouldn't get it. as for for winning the lotto one can only wish.
especiallly since I never buy tickets....LOL
maddog thats awesome. id like to see some good figure 8 stuff.

brentsydlik they have some good ones here infact they are having some this saturday.
ya know... just thinking about it, my eagle looks just like survivor and the only other running driving eagle i see around here looks just like eagle eyes!
The white and bronze seems to have been a very popular color combo...me and tougeagles are that color too...I also had 2 others in that color scheme in the past.
You know, I would laugh if Caroline WAS one of your eagles at one time.... that would be definition of a small world.
one was a 82' 2 door limited coupe and the other was a 84' if I remember correctly, sedan...that one was way back right out of high school....I wish I would have had the obsession I do now back then...that 82 coupe especially was real nice...it only had 30,00 miles when I got it..the previous owner was a retired Army colonels and it was perfect....power everything perfect leather, rally package and alloy rims....not a spec of rust either, sat in a garage its whole life since new.....I was about 21 or 22 then...girls weren't diggin' the Eagle thing so I decided i wanted to get into the corvette scene. Sold my beautiful 82 for 4500..bought a TRASHED!! 78 vette with the money and couldn't afford to replace a darn thing on it sold the vette 6 months later for 3000.00 and bought an 85 Eagle DL.....pretty rusty though..
Hey maddog whens the next time you'll be at the track...I would love to come down some time and check out the races.
should be going this saturday after i get off work at 5.
Im going to be gone this saturday but maybe in the next few week I can take a ride down there....do you go most saturdays maddog?
yes i do go most saturdays unless i'm sick or something comes up. just let me know the week you plan on going and i'll be there.
That would be awesome to check out some races...I havent been to one in a long time.

HI You are absolutely right..There is a track in Hartfard about 45 minuets away we haven't been in
a long time .Don
well i won't be going to the races this saturday as Eagle Eyes needs some work done on her before i take her on the highway again.
Dude!...what happened?
it's just the wheel bearings nothing major. i just ain't to comfortable doing 45 in a 75.
that can get a little hairy when those start to go out.
yeah tell me about it. i had some go out on me before and i almost :censored: myself when the front wheels started jerking back and forth causing a death wobble while going down a hill at highway speeds talk about scary.
HI sorry to hear about your bearings going out ...not a good time ..no time is a good time but we nave to keep on living as good as we can ...have a good day ........Don
Seems theres never a silver lining when it comes to bad wheel bearings.
nope just a brown one. :rotfl:
i think that deserves a rim shot!

a hat trick is a hockey reference.
HI That's why I don't know what it means.... If it doesant have wheels I don't watch it ....... Later

Hey Maddog, Whatcha been up to dude? havent seen ya on here in a while?
not much just been working on my eagles and racecar. i just wish i had a shop or garage to work on them in.

A hat-trick is three goals by the same person in the same game.
There's also a Double-Hat-Trick 6 goals, and a Triple-Hat-Trick - 9 goals.
assists don't count on this one. So you can't get two goals and one assist - That ain't a Hat-trick.

HI I know what your saying ....But I have been like this for 64 years kinda late to change now ...
will be like this till the end .....And my dad just turned 90 7-23-11 O well Don
i came up with some possible paint schemes for Survivor using the Eagle template that is available here on the nest and i was curious what you all thought of them.

I like the white inlay with the paint scheme...any paint scheme.
maddog, so what do you do for a living?
Impressive drawings.
fast food but my dream job is acting. as for the drawings i cannot take credit for them as i found the template here on the nest, all i did was clean it up using paint (witch took about a month and a half to do).
The colors all looked a bit tacky to me. I did kinda dig both the red/white/blue scheme you had though.
the last four are my personal favorites.
Im diggin' the red whit and blue. It has that AMC ralley car look. that would be awesome to have the entire interior done in the same color scheme but that would cost a small fortune. I cant even afford to get my Eagles road worthy let alone make them look good....I just gotta keep adding to the old change jar, at the rate im going I should have enough money by the time im able to draw social security...im 32 right now if that tells ya anything :rotfl:

i'm in the same boat as you and i'm only four years younger than you are. :-\
Just my opinion (from top to bottom):
the red/black is always a good one,
drk blue/black too dark for my liking (not enough contrast for me)
light blue/black is better
blue on blue is interesting (either one)
Red/blue just looks wrong,
blue with red trim looks worse...
The red/wht/blue ones: I like the one with the red on the top (but that's my preference)
The last two with blue on red (blue bottom) and white hood, I'm not crazy about.

I'll second this. Wanted to say something along these lines yesterday.
AMERICA! :)
i'm leaning towards one of the red, white, and blue ones with the blue on top. i personally don't like the color red and blue is one of my favorite colors.
Hey maddog, have you ever been to that junkyard off 47th an hwy 50. I just noticed it today on my way back from Rock Ford. It looked like its descent size
yes i have and that is actually about 5 or 6 junk yards in the same area and none of them have any AMC's.
that figures....atleast we still have the trusty old 29th street junkyard

you can say that agian.
well the guy i bought survivor from was finally able to get to get to the extra complete drive train that came with her. the eagle that the drivetrain came from was totaled after being broadside on the right front. he said it was either an 84 or 85 wagon. we used a cherrypicker to unload the engine from the back of the truck. well as my as my dad was moving to truck forword the cherrypicker decided that it didn't want to stand up any more and fell forward it don't look like it did much damage but i won't really be able tell till my next day off.
Are You going to start work on Survior again maddog? That sucks that the cherry picker fell over dude...these things are pretty tough though...it should be fine
yeah now that it is getting slightly warmer out I've decided that i need to get some work done on her so that i can start driving her. the only problem with the other engine besides the fall is the fact that it has a slight crack in the outside water but it can be fixed so I'm going to completely redo it.
If ya need an extra set of hands give me a hollar dude.
right on dude if i need any help I'll let you know. oh and the as for the spare motor can you say stroker.
Heck yeah....build it and drop it in Eagle Eyes! You thinking of doing a 4.0 head swap on it?
yep with a motorcraft swap. but i want to get me a sport model to drop it in. >:D >:D
i haven't done anything to survivor in a long time other than trying to fine tune the carb and taking her for a few test drives. i have some bad news about my spare motor and that is that it was stolen out of my yard, but here is the weird thing they didn't take the spare transmission and transfer case that were right near it. ??? so i no longer a have a spare to turn into a stroker. :(
Dude, Im sorry to hear that! Id be willing to bet the :censored: jerks probably stole it to scrap for some beer money...And Ill also bet if they had a few more buddies with them they would have probably grabbed the trans. and t-case too. I had a couple of spare doors and fenders in my yard a few years back and they too vanished...Ironically when scrap prices spiked.
the thing is i wouldn't doubt that they stole it for scrap. but the i think the ones took it are a couple of illeagles that are always driving around in a flatbead dully asking everyone if they have scrap metal that they can have. the resone i think it is them is because they have a history of taking things from peoples yards and even vacant houses and they are always in the neighbor hood.
With the economy as bad as it is the scrap business has exploded...It makes ya sick thinking of your stolen parts on a freighter headed to a steel plant in china....You might have to booby trap your T-case and transmission...maybe run a 220v charge to it or something >:D or theres always the the trusty bear trap under some brush... that always gets a would be theifs attention.

:rotfl: yeah they can search all they want they ain't going to find it without making a ton of noise.
I use to have a GM 12-bolt. When I was still in college I drove all the way to Chicago to get it. I say 'use to'. Came home one day and somebody had taken it. I HATE a thief. My guess is they took it to use (not scrap) as they left the 7.9" S-10 axle that was sitting next to it. I hate to think some a-hole is out there driving around with my 12-bolt under their car.
Also had someone rip the Sun Tune II tach out of my Nova. They didn't even cut the wires, they grabbed and pulled and broke the fill panel that goes under the steering column. Grr that makes me angry.
Sorry someone dragged off your engine. If it just happened, you might stop by a few of the local recycling yards. You might see it sitting right there in the pile.
no a few weeks ago i just kept forgeting to post it and if they tried using it they would be in for a heck of a surprise considering one of the external water jackets had a crack in it that needed to be welded shut.
well i had a small accident with Survivor the other day while unloading her from my trailer at my new house. nothing to bad but the front valiance may need replaced now if i can't repair the gash in it and reshape it.
Are you still in pueblo maddog?
yes i am i just moved to the other side of town. (closer to the junkyard with all the Eagles, Hornets, and Concords). ;D
For car guys like us that's prime real estate....we'll have to dig a tunnel from your place to the junk yard...we can smuggle those cars out of there one piece at a time
i wish i was that much closer to it but i'm on the other side of the highway so i'm still a few miles away from it but i am closer to the race track also so that makes it better. you know we need to do another run to that yard sometime.
Yeah we do! I got several interior pieces i need to get, I just broke my b pillar cover :banghead:
yeah there are a few things i need to get as well but i might have to wait till next year to get those as money has been a bit on the tight side if you know what i mean.
well my money issue is not as bad as it was twords the end of last year and thanks to some decent budgeting i was able to save some money until something good popped up locally and now $500 later here is the new powerplant that will be going into Survivor. oh and it came with a bonus item.

Dude!! Thats awesome!!....Does 29th st. have any manual cars you can grab the clutch pedal assembly out of?
yes they do. ;D
When you decide to go get it let me know, theres a few parts I need for Odie....And probably a few that I didn't even know I needed...I went to ABC junkyard last week with $20 in my pocket and discovered that I needed the chrome ash trays and cigarette lighters out of an 81' Lincoln town car....The funny thing: I don't own a Lincoln and I don't smoke....Yet for what ever reason I can't help but feel it was the best $11.00 I ever spent.
will do as there are a few other things i need to get as well.

Now you just need to get an 81 Lincoln town car to go with those beautiful ashtrays!
well I got me some new rims for Survivor yesterday but they need a real good cleaning with a wire wheel before I attempt to put the new tires I have for her on them. that and get the new motor swapped in but I have to get my trailer cleared off first so I can get my racecar on it instead of sitting in the garage taking up the space I need for the engine swap.
well I got the racecar out of the garage today and Survivor into it (not an easy task). tear down will likely start tomorrow after I get home from work and hopefully it will go smoothly and I will have the engine swap done in a couple of weeks.
well I finally got the engine out today but I kind of had to leave it on the engine hoist till I can get to the parts store to get longer bolts so I can put it on my engine stand. after that I can start moving all the Eagle parts over to the CJ motor, yay.
well I got the engine in last night (not a fun task). I still have to finish putting the rest of the bolts that hold the transmission and engine together, as well as hooking up all of the accessories, reinstalling the radiator, getting a new starter and a new coolant temperature sensor, sorting out all the vacuum lines, and building a new exhaust. I took a few pictures from just before the motor went in and right after I got it bolted in, sorry the first two didn't turn out very well but the last one looks alright and here they are.

IT LIVE'S well sort of ::). I got the everything on the motor assembled and put together other than the vacuum lines and the exhaust. I just have one really big problem now, I have no idea where the vacuum lines go :banghead: :help:.
I am still having problems with figuring out where the vacuum lines go and I have decided to just simplify them as much as possible. so what I need now is a good easy to read diagram that will make everything work.
Looks good from here! Have you figured out what is stopping her from firing up?
part of the issue is that the carburetor that was on her was messed up, I put a different one on her and she runs for a little while but with almost all the vacuum lines still not hooked up properly she stalls out once she warms up. plus I still need to properly set the timing on the motor.
