Horseshoe automatic shifter swap possible?
« on: June 27, 2018, 11:45:37 AM »
I know very little about transmissions, but I've always liked the look of the horseshoe shifters from the 60's. Does this type of conversation even seem possible? I expect I will have to make custom linkage, and I don't need a Ratcheting shifter, just a standard shifter. Is this more complicated than I am thinking it is? Does anyone have pictures of their shifters removed by chance?

Not too good at this 'computer' stuff. This MIGHT be a pic. of what you're looking for. Had to post it to see. I also have a pic. of just the bare shifter if that will help.

Thank you very much! That actually helps a lot. Up until this point I was unsure how far the linkage goes down before attaching to the linkage rod. I was afraid if I tried to add a different shifter the tolerances would be too narrow.

Horeshoe shifters were on GM vehicles if I recall. I did a quick Google search and found a company that makes one for Chrysler transmissions but it''s almost $400.

AMC used a horse shoe shifter on 71-74 Javelins. Might be able to get one from a Javelin and make it work.

Yeah I was looking at the kilduff shifters, very nice and I believe he makes them all himself, probably why they are so expensive. I didn't know the javelins had horseshoes. First car I saw the shifter on was the riviera, and of corse the camaro is a popular option as well.
