Mismatched Gear Ratios in an 86

My 86 came with mismatched gears from the factory. 2.35s in the front and 2.73s in the rear. I can confidently say that neither axle was swapped either. Another forum member suggested that maybe AMC did that on purpose because the NP128 found exclusively in 86s works as an open differential. Was this a factory screw up or was it done intentionally on other cars too?
