Horrible fuel pump quality
« on: February 11, 2023, 04:21:41 PM »
I'm now on my 3rd fuel pump replacement in the last 6 months.  First replacement one would leak around the outlet threads at the top (like it wasn't threaded right), then gave up the ghost (this was a rock auto purchased unit), replaced it with a Napa/Carter pump, which lasted maybe 2-3 months and then last week had the car slowly die out.  The arm on it had completely worn down...like the metal wasn't designed to have the cam rub on it.  So now on the 4th field pump in the last year, this time a Delphi unit from auto zone.  Quality control on these things is just horrible seems like.  So far so good on this one...but we shall see.

Hopefully this one lasts for you. I haven’t had any problems with fuel pump’s lately so maybe you just had a string of bad luck

Let us know if/when your Delphi unit punks out.    I've had similar experiences with the 6-banger pumps.   Since I have a lot of 258-powered cars, I keep a couple of pumps on the shelf!

When I bought my second replacement pump form LORDCO they mentioned they had gone form a 90 day to a lifetime warranty and suggested I keep the receipt and the box and on the next failure they'll give me a straight-swap.

I've kept the box and the receipt on this one!  I also have the Napa one in the box too, but I fear it was just outside the return range on that.

Would definitely recommend jumping on E-Bay and buying an NOS "Made in US" pump, then run ethanol-free fuel, if possible.  I'm running fuel injection now, but when I was running a Weber I had an NOS pump on the car and another NOS unit on-hand as a spare, both from E-Bay.  You'll pay a few bucks more, but it seems even the "cheap" US-made aftermarket parts from the 80s/90s are still superior.

The generic Carter/Advance/O-Reilly's/RockAuto pumps all hail from foreign shores and quality seems questionable at best.

Anymore, I feel good when I'm able to find Mexican-made parts, just to avoid junk from China.  Pretty funny, because it used to be that Mexican stuff was the worst, but a lot of Chinese aftermarket parts have since set a new low.

I put a Carquest/Advance turd on mine.  I got it because it had a 'lifetime' warranty and I know the guys at Advance very well.  It put out way too much pressure; I looked down the carb and the idle jets had turned to geysers!  It flooded out and died before I could react.  Ran the old one which just leaked from the seam a bit until another one came.  It seems okay for now, but I don't trust it.  I hate that a car has become less reliable by putting new parts on it.

I still have the original for a backup.  It just leaked from the seam a bit.  Can anyone point me to a rebuild kit for this pump?  I would love to replace just the diaphragm and gasket and continue to use the time-tested original pump.

The last one I bought ( about 10 years ago ) was made in Korea, seems to be ok so far. I installed it about 5 years ago but haven’t driven it much because I need to replace the carburetor.
I keep searching for a good quality replacement, haven’t found one yet. I bought another spare made by Delphi, doubt it is very good. “ made in china “.

Good North American-made NOS ones are everywhere, guys, it's not a tough search.  The cheapest ones of these US and Canada-made NOS pumps are only like $6 bucks more than RockAuto's Carter Chinese pumps.  I know we're a cheap lot, but c'mon...
