Torquing the front axle nut

I have the TSM and it says to torque the axle nut on the front wheels to 25 lbs. I've read 75 lbs, and one blog on here said 180 lbs!

My two cents, I torqued it to 75 lbs, and I had a bearing growl in the front. So I torqued it to 25 lbs and all is well.

I went by the TSM. Why are peeps in here suggesting 75 lbs and 180 lbs...This was the front hubs that the topics were referring to!

I knew that the rears should be torqued at 180 lbs.

Go by the TSM!!!!

I'm confused.  I have a 1980 tsm and it says for the "Front Axle Hub Nut" it should be torqued to 180.

Well I guess it would help to read the right line. Sorry!

But why on earth would the dang GROWL be WORSE when tighter?! The bearings are new in that hub!!

Didn't the earlier hubs used a different type of bearing? Maybe it needed to be torqued more?  :-\

I talked with my mechanic who installed the bearings and he said they were a bit different than the originals he replaced. I'm just going to keep my eyes on the wheel...see if it's loose or not, and keep the 40 lbs torque I did last night. Cone of confusion!

Something is definitely wrong. That nut should be torqued to 180 ft-lbs.

If he put in the ball style bearings then no it doesn't get tightened that much.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

It's the kind of pressure where you put a ratchet with a small extension on that nut and expect to bounce your full body weight on it to get it where it belongs.

I recall it was only about 30 ft lbs. Too bad he didn't use the caged roller style. Much beefier
