Shafted radio in DIN bezel?
« on: April 24, 2014, 04:35:51 PM »
Will this work?  I have an '86 with a DIN style radio mount, but I'd like to install my older shafted style AMC cassette radio.  The old radio has the plastic piece that fits over the front and it's bigger than the DIN hole in the bezel, so it looks like it'd hold it ok.  The old radio also has the same slip-in clip in the back corner as the new one.  The only difference is the plug (no problem) and the physical size, the older one being taller.  I really want a tape deck in it but I can't find any of the '86 AM/FM/Cassette units in decent shape for a reasonable price.

Anyone have any input on that?

try something like this http://www.scosche.com/car-audio/installation/84-ford-taurus-sable-jeep-multi-mounting-kit

There are many kits on the scosche web site. Might have to look through for something that works.

Phisically, not sure. I think the shaft radio is taller, but it should sit behind the bezel.

Electrically?  You need to pick up the AMC DIN pigtail connector and some trailer connectors for the shaft style pins.

I found that it wouldn't physically fit.  Since it is taller it won't come forward far enough.  The later bezels have a top section that protrudes farther out than the old style, which allows the deeper DIN radios more space in back, but prevents the taller shafted radio from sitting far enough forward.  However, if one had a shafted stereo that was the same height as the DIN models, it'd probably work ok and may even rest properly on the L shaped support in back.

What color interior do you have?

I got a blue bezel for the style radio you want just sitting around.

Garnet red. Thought about dying one, but it's too much trouble.
