The intake is actually from an 83 Spirit

The aluminum intake from like  81 and up works good on a 4.0 is you are going to carb it, very little modification to make it work. Your just have to grind off the "ears" on the dowel lobes a little, then it sits on top of the 4.0 dowels

You do however have to use the 4.0 exhaust manifold, the older ones wont work at all ad the holes in the head are different. The 4.0 has a kinda sorta header type exhaust so that's a plus for a little extra power.

Here is the write-up I'm currently working on.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OFrPDmtJTA8cbtu0DzGItxBQdy9Wo6K3sxZqfpk-pxM/edit?usp=sharing

Will I need new exhaust and intake manifold gaskets? Do I get 4.0 ones all around or since I'm using a 4.2 intake do I need to get a 4.2 intake gasket?

Fine by me. Hoping it can be of some use when it's completed. It seems there is a lot of good 4.0 info scattered all over the place and I was just looking for a simple concise guide with everything I'd need to know to do the swap without getting too long winded about everything.

Good write up!

Use the 4.0 gasket for the intake/exhaust manifolds

We have run into several things but have figured them out so far!

I have three AMC's that run , my dad has 3 as well , they are all community cars and we work on the toghether, my dad, my son and I

We also have a couple of parts cars and of course a whole pile of spare parts!

Ok, this project has had some delays due to workin all the dang time.....

But this evening got the electric fuel pump hooked up, starter on, clutch linkage on, a few other wires and such

AND IT RUNS!

Little tweak of the timing and she runs smooth like butter, no exhaust pipe so it's really loud, but smooth otherwise

Sometime this weekend I'm hoping to make it actually move under its own power......it was saved from the grave so that's a big deal

Great AMC day!
