Dipstick tube removal

I've got a 258 with the short style dipstick that I'm trying to remove and replace with the LONG style dipstick. How do I get the old dipstick tube out? Doesn't appear to be any bolts holding it in place.

I'm thinking clamp on with a vice grip but I figured I'd ask before I go at it and destroy it.

Maybe needle nose pliers with one jaw in the dipstick.  I don't think you'll meet too much resistance!

If you don't care about it, grip near the bottom with vise grips and tap upwards with a hammer
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

If you want to save the old short dipstick tube insert a screw that will fit snugly inside the top of the tube. Now clamp on your vice-grip pliers on the tube and bolt. The bolt will support the tube preventing it from collapsing under your pliers. Strike the pliers upward and the tube should pop out. :eagle:

I don't care much about the current tube, just need it out. I want to check the oil without having to climb into the engine bay.

On a side note, any idea if the long style dipstick will work on an engine with the HEI distributor? It looks close. Not much room between the distributor and block.

I put in an HEI and switched to the short dipstick

Carefully put the new one in, I used an open end wrench and tapped it gently, it will break off, believe me I found out....

It might, but it looked too close to me and I had the other one too so I played it safe

I put the HEI dist on a 4.0L and it fit. In fact, sometime after the 15th I'll be doing it again so I can drive my '84 J10 this summer (going propane instead of fuel injection. Only $2 a gallon now)
