Find a shifter for '70's into '80's Ford Pinto, Fairmont, Mustang, I used mid 70's Pinto.

I found a new NOS shifter from a Ford Pinto/Mustang II/Granada, and got my shift bezel from Mustangs Unlimited made for a 74-78 Mustang II. Direct fit into our Eagles. A little pricey for my completely brand new set-up, but you can find used ones on that famous auction site. Just search "Ford Mustang II Shifter", and see what you find.

I looked at that shift bezel on the Mustangs Unlimited site, and it looks really sweet!  Added to my wish list.  Does it fit in the gauge console?  Thanks.

I second that request

Here's what my set-up looks like guys. I think it looks better than the stock AMC shifter.

The bezel from Mustangs Unlimited for a Mustang II is a direct bolt in, and better yet, it is actually metal instead of the cheap plastic ones AMC used. 100% same dimensions as the stock one though, so no issues with fit with the center console option.

The NOS Pinto/Mustang II shifter is also a direct bolt in. The only thing required on this shifter to adapt it to our Eagles is to drill one small hole (less than 1/8", I can't remember the exact size  ;D) for the screw to mount the Eagles stock gear indicator and light assembly. Also better than stock is the easily removable T-handle that comes off by taking out a small allen head screw, unlike the stock one which the service manual says to remove with a hammer, and block of wood (which I was never able to successfully do), but now I'll never have to.  :rotfl:

Is the black part on the handle metal or plastic?  I like the looks of the Ford shifter but the metal ones are too cold to the touch for me so I still prefer the Eagle shifter.

priya, the black part of the t-handle is plastic with metal end caps, also the push button is also black plastic. Which is why I choose this one over the chrome ones. The plastic is a good insulator and doesn't transfer heat, so it doesn't get cold in the winter, or burn your hand in the summer. Even the button won't get hot in the summer like the stock ones would on a blistering hot day. Feels just like the original when shifting, and looks more spiffy with the chrome.

I found this was actually cheaper than getting a stock NOS one from the Jeep dealer. They want $500 for the whole assembly, that is if they still have them, cause last time I checked was over 10 years ago. I changed mine to this because my old one's cable broke, and I was just bumping through the gears for a year, or two, which is pretty unsafe. So I decided to upgrade to this.   :)

BTW, this whole set-up ran me around $135, which isn't too bad for having everything brand new. Try getting a Hurst shifter for that price.  8)

How come I can not find the bezel on mustang unlimited? Where in the world do I look? I can find all the Mustang parts just not the II bezel.  Did you get Everything from there or did the shifter it self come from some where else?

84eaglelmz

I found one that has the whole shifter for sale but the t handle is missing the button to push in to change gears, Will the one from the eagle work?

Here's the link for the bezel.

http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/Mustang/Interior/Billet-Accessories/Shifter-Bezels-Knobs/Shifter-Bezel-1974-1978-Mustang-II-Automatic-Transmission.axd

It says the shifter seal is sold separately, so I ordered one with the bezel. It turns out mine came with one already installed, but at least I have an extra one now.  ;D

I bought the shifter separately from the world famous auction site. It was a complete unit with t-handle and all.
The lister at the time was charging $80, I believe he wants $120 nowadays for a complete one.
