How to remove window tint
« on: December 22, 2011, 04:48:33 PM »
Got pulled over today and the trooper informed me that the tint on the front windows of my Eagle is too dark. His machine said 42% of visible light is getting thru compared to the legal minimum of 70%.

How do I get the tint off? Got some of it off with a razor blade but not having a lot of luck. IS there a better way?

I've been there before, it's not fun!  My Escort had tinted windows when I got it that were 70% visibility in the front and 30% in the back, it all had to be removed.

I also had this happen in the cold part of the year.  Getting the tint warmed up will make a huge difference.  Use a heat gun, hair dryer, halogen floodlight, or whatever else you have at your disposal to heat it up.  Not to the point that it's melting, just so that it's warm to the touch, it'll really soften up the adhesive.  When I removed mine I used a plastic paint scraper from the hardware store, because with the razor you run the risk of it etching into the window.  It doesn't work as well as a metal blade but its impossible to scratch your glass with one.

You can also buy something called tint-off that comes in a small spray bottle.  I got it at wally world right next to the window tint rolls, you can probably buy it almost anywhere.  I would work on a corner of the window, then spray this stuff in between the window and tint film, then work on a different area of the window while that worked itself in for a couple minutes, spray the other part, then go back to the first section and scrape some more.  The tint-off helps to loosen up the adhesive and when you're done spray some more on a rag to get the rest of the residue off, it'll work a lot better than regular glass cleaner and it's not going to harm the door panel or anything else.

So you don't have to remove it from the back windows?  The policeman made me remove it from all the windows although the way I interpret the law here in PA, he was wrong and I should have only needed to remove mine from the front doors.  The hatch window was the real nightmare, because of the traces for the window defroster.  I was careful to work between them and around them, and I still ended up ruining all but 2 lines towards the top of the window, so that really rendered the defroster useless.

I'll give the tint off a try. The officer told me that the rear windows and the hatch glass were fine but the driver and passenger side window had to have the tint removed.

This is probably the best picture that shows the tint. Not really all that dark but the meter showed that it was letting only 42% of visible light thru...Can't argue with that I guess. After I get the weather stripping redone in this car I think I'm going to take it to a tint shop and have the windows done, the faded purple tint is starting to look funny.

Just looked up the tint law for the area that I was in. Looks like many states have different laws for sedans VS vans and SUV's and the officer went by the less strict van/SUV law when he gave me the warning. ;D

Ugh, I've had to do this before too.  I also used the 'Tint Off' stuff, and it worked pretty well.  Use it liberally.  With mine the tint had been on there so long that in some places I had to use a razorblade (didn't scratch the window, fortunately) as well, the tint had basically fused with the window.  Using the plastic scraper like WoodenBirdOfPrey might be smarter.... better safe than sorry!  Heat definitely helps.

Shame you have to take it off, that tint looks great with the black paint.  Best of luck!

Not meaning to hijack the thread but love that Wagoneer in the background. Looks like the old 71 Wagoneer I had.

Thanks! Unfortunately I had to part with that one awhile back. It was a well cared for '76 with a 401, I've been kicking myself ever since.

Can relate to that. As much as I love the Eagle (Mod, please don't ban me for this statement :) )  I'd trade it in a heartbeat for a well maintained early Wagoneer. I'm 6'4" tall, they fit me better :)

I've got a friend about that height and he had to shoe horn himself to get into my Eagle, I'm about 5'6" and the Eagle fits me well. Only thing I don't really miss about the Wagoneer is the fuel mileage, my Eagle gets atleast double the mileage without even really trying. One of these days I'd like to get another one, they just scream Americana...Kind of like the Eagle!
