Sedan trunk mounted luggage rack question.
« on: December 21, 2011, 04:04:32 AM »
I was looking at the eaglepedia at the options page and it showed the optional trunk mounted luggage rack. To be honest I had completly forgotten about them. I had an 82 limited 2 dr sedan that had the luggage rack but mine had real wood attached to the bars. Looking at the pictures in the eaglepedia they didnt appear to have wood rather they appear to be just metal. I was wondering if mine may have been an after thought of the previous owner or was it from the factory like that...I wish I had some pictures of that car.

In the 80's luggage racks were readily available off the shelf and were available everywhere.  I worked for a automotive upholstery shop when I was a kid in the 90's and I remember filling 2 dumpsters with brand new "custom" after market luggage racks of all different sorts.  I asked the owner why we were throwing them away and he said they were hot in the 80's and now they were junk.  he was tired of storing them.  Now I wish I would have stashed them all since things come around again and are popular once more.  There must have been 4000 sets that were brand new. Wood, chrome, black, etc....

Here is a picture of one at the Rambler Ranch.  Its hard to tell if there is any wood under all those pine needles.

I got the worst splinter Ive ever had off that luggage rack. it went right under my thimb nail...it was about 3/4" long and god did that hurt. I had to tear off the whole nail to get the thing out.
