jeep rims -- what kind do you use?
« on: November 29, 2011, 05:46:23 PM »
i am planning to upgrade my wheels to jeep rims as many of you have done -- i am curious what you all use and if you use spacers, etc to accommodate them.  i am also curious about your tire sizes -- i would like to stay close to the original diameter to avoid speedo issues.

anyway just looking for your thoughts...thanks

Mine has the standard steel XJ/YJ 15's.  They look like they have the same offset as the factory wheels, no clearance issues and no wheel spacers required.  With the shallow center caps like I have, there isn't enough clearance for the axle nuts in the rear.  A 1" wheel spacer would make room for the caps, or the easier solution is to get the earlier style center caps which are bigger and provide enough room.

I'm running 215-75 BFG All Terrains which required a mild trim at the end of the rocker panel to keep them from rubbing when turning.  The size isn't throwing off the speedometer much, according to my GPS it only reads about 2 mph higher than actual.  I think the speedo's are a bit conservative with the stock diameter tires.

The first pic is with the old Goodyears, the second is with the BFG's in the same size, and the 2" spacer installed in the front (original coils).

I used the mag rims off the Jeep Cherokees similar to WoodenBirdOfPrey on my '83 Woody.  Then I bought chrome wheel skins off GreasyBay to dress them up a bit.

The Tire Size is 215/65/R15.  They are a bit shorter, but are much wider.  Gives it a bit of an aggressive look with the wider tires I think.

Great post here. Trying to decide if I'll swap out Rims on my 83 also. Would love to see pics all in one place of the various Jeep rims on an Eagle.

I have a set of wheels that are off an early to mid 90s Grand Cherokee.  They are 15 X 7 and fit really well, other than the axle nut in the back sticks out too far to allow the center cap to be put on unless you go with a spacer.  I have 1" spacers in the back so the width in the back is now the same as the front.

I had 205/70-15 on them, recently upsized to 215/75-15.  There is a little bit of rubbing on my splashguards.

When I bought the 215 tires off of Craigslist, they came with a set of jeep steel wheels.  You should be able to find these style of wheels on Craigslist for $10/wheel.

I just found a pretty good reference for Jeep factory wheel sizes and offsets for each model and year.

http://www.discountedwheelwarehouse.com/Jeep___Vehicle_Bolt_Pattern_Reference.cfm

According to that, the Grand's like the picture of the one you posted use a different lug pattern and offset, so you can take those off your list.

Looks like anything on there with the 5 lug 4.5 inch with medium offset should work just as good as stock wheels.  Keep in mind that some of the Grands had 16's which will limit your tire choices as there aren't many light truck tires in those sizes.

Probably going to try the 33/9.50/15s that are on the back of my MJ in this pic.

If they will work then the 215/75/15s I have will go on the Spirit Pre-runner

We have the five spoke alloys on the sx/4, they look ok. The rear center caps don't fit due to the axle nut, but that could be solved with a spacer.

I've got the same wheels as Shaggimo. They are called Grizzlies. I have a Jeep Cherokee rear axle so I don't have any problems with the rear axle nuts.

I plan on swapping them out with the 10 spoke wheels some day though.

This site has pics of most of the OEM Jeep wheels. Just pay attention to size and bolt pattern.

Lots for sale on the Comancheclub forum. I'm taking the 2wd AW4 out of one (for the Spirit) and including a 4x4 one with NP231 when I sell it as a project.
