VAM called it the Lerma.
I spotted one of the four door versions when I was in Mazatlan back in 1997. Unfortunately I was on a bus at the time and couldn't get up close and personal with it or snap any pictures. It definitely made me do a double take though... I thought it was the result of a Concord and Spirit gettin' busy.
Actually, I thought it was someone's one-off custom job. It wasn't until many years later that I learned it was an actual production car in Mexico. During that trip I saw a few other VAMs, all just slightly different from their AMC counterparts elsewhere in North America.
For decades, the Mexican market has had some interesting variations on vehicles we commonly know. I'm not just talking about VAM, I mean other manufacturers too. With some new rules coming into effect under NAFTA, it should become easier to bring some of them north.
