slow going into 1st

  It runs & drives really good  but I've noticed that "sometimes" my ride is slow going into first , all the other gears feel good. I'm not leaking any fluids. Also the shifter seems really tough {to shift}. The the part I really hate is that its a "sometime" kinda of a problem. Any  & all  suggestion are welcome thanks..

Next thing is a chore. Check your filter. Than while your in there check band tightness. Should be heck if I know exactly 36 inch pounds. Check the eaglepedia.

this was happening to me with my 82. Try shifting from park to neutral for a sec. Then to drive. If it goes right right into 1st from there, it's probably losing fluid from the convertor. Not too big of a deal, it fills right back up when you shift to N. Also, if it only does it after sitting a while, but is fine after it first goes in I would think the same thing.

The Chryco trannys don't have full circulation when in park. Some of them are OK to go from park to drive and go. A few have to be idled in neutral to get the oil into all the places it is supposed to be before they'll move. My first 88 had a pressure plug missing when I got it. It only lost oil out the hole when not in park.

A little something I learned a long time ago as a trans tech with Mopar trans is to either put a can of STP engine oil treatment (you read right) or Lucas trans treatment in the pan after doing the filter and pan clean out. It thickens the oil up and causes the seals in the clutch drums to engage faster and keeps all the bushings from running dry. Old fluid can also cause trouble shifting (dirt and stuff up in the linkages can cause problems too)
   The added bonus to the thickening of the fluid is the torque converter loses some of it's slippage due the the gel factor and it has even increased fuel economy in several.
   When you start the car in the morning and you get a vibration that slowly goes away, or just dissipates a little, it is often a sign that the torque converter is about to go. (all my 998 trans have done that) The converter neck snaps and all the fluid dumps out, leaving you stranded usually.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!
