At the least, if you are going to have the roof replaced, go ahead and strip it off yourself then give the top a good once-over with some sandpaper, bondo any minor spots, and put some paint on it. Since the vinyl will hide minor irregularities, you can just brush on the paint. It will protect the roof from any water that gets behind the vinyl seams.
Matching old paint can be hard, and they'll have to blend the paint even if they can get the color almost perfect. The biggest part of any cost is the removal and prep, so if you can handle that yourself you should be able to save over half the cost. I've never had to price anything myself, just deal with insurance, so I don't know what the real costs are.
