The Eagles all used the 23 spline transfer cases, regardless of the transmission they were used behind.

Can't say for certain, but here's the source:http://www.n0kfb.org/homepage/amc/tech/transfer_case/swap/index.htm

Some of the 4 cyl Eagles came with AX-4 or AX-5 trans which was 21 spline
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

I figured that sounded a little too.. conclusive to be certain.

I have an '83 w/a 258/auto. & switched - NOT 'On the fly'. It JUST 5h1trolet the bed & I need another one. I have located one out of a Kammback 4 banger, 4 speed. Is it an acceptable replacement? I forgot to ask what year Kammback. The one I had was full-time 4 WD. NO switch ('81).
'83 AMC Eagle wagon 258/auto.
'84 AMC Eagle sedan (4 door) 258/auto.
PREVIOUS AMCs:

'81 Eagle Kammback 258/4 speed (Purchased new)
'82 Eagle wagon 258/5 speed (Ordered new, traded Kammback)
'86 (I THINK) Eagle wagon - BlackBird 258/auto. (Got hit/totaled)
'83 Eagle wagon - White Eagle 258-auto. (Front subframe was rotted out - sold for parts)

If the Kammback has the ability to be shifted, they both should be the NP129, so yes, it will work. Even if it isn't a shift on the fly case, it would probably work, the CAD on the front axle would just need to be locked in. A later transfer case (85 and newer) should work too (86 had an NP128 that was one year only, but it would still work), those ones were only shift on the fly because the CAD in the front axle was discontinued.

If the Kammback has the ability to be shifted, they both should be the NP229, so yes, it will work.

Just to clarify the Eagles never had a NP229, those were found in the Grand Wagoneers. The Eagles had the NP129. (Same shell as the NP229 but without low range)
'83 Eagle SX4. 92 4.0 fuel injected, T5, NP229, '01 Dana 35 with Detroit Truetrac 3.54 gears.

'87 Jeep Comanche. Renix 4.0 liter, AX15, NP242, HP Dana 30 and factory Dana 44 rear axle.
